Meadow Lark Country Club celebrates centennial
Meadow Lark Country Club is celebrating 100 years in Great Falls, and in honor of its anniversary, the club held a six-day celebration.
The centennial celebration continued on Saturday with plenty of activities for members, including a car show, drive-in movie, practice putting greens, a trick shot artist, and a kid zone.
The club is expecting around 500 guests, approximately ⅓ of its total members and their families, to attend the weekend festivities.
Meadow Lark Country Club manager Michael Bowman said this a huge milestone in the club’s history.
“Meadow Lark Country Club has been a fixture in Great Falls for a hundred years now, and an integral part of the city, and so 100 years is a big milestone for the club and for the city,” Bowman said.
The Meadow Lark staff published an entire history of the club, just in time for its 100th anniversary. You can find the published edition in the country club’s front office.
Jim Kostecki - Memorial
Jim Kostecki: January 15, 1929 - March 2, 2019
A life well lived. Veiw this memorial as a sampling of what Jim will share with his father who passed away when Jim was only 7 years old.
For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
On Saturday evening, March 2, 2019, James Anthony Kostecki, at the age of 90, peacefully passed from his earthly home to be in his new home with his Savior, Jesus Christ, leaving behind family and friends whom he loved and that dearly loved him. Jim, with great dignity, spent this last year dealing with advanced stages of pulmonary fibrosis.
Jim was born in Newark, NJ, on January 15, 1929, to Catherine McDonough Kostecki and Joseph Kostecki. As was the case with many of the young men of his generation, Jim enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps as an infantryman during WWII. A few months later he was serving in the Pacific Theater at the tender age of 16. After the war, he remained in China and received the distinction as one of the China Marines.
After a short break in service following WWII, Jim re-enlisted. Shortly after re-enlisting he found himself participating in another beach landing on September 15, 1950, this time at Inchon, South Korea. Jim served in the Korean War during the first year of fighting, and after returning back to the states, his service-driven heart lead him to volunteer for a second year of the war where he could once again be with his fellow Marines.
Shortly after the Korean War, Jim was assigned to serve as a Marine Corps Drill Instructor at Paris Island, SC. And in 1962, he was on a naval ship off of the coast of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crises, waiting for orders that fortunately never came.
As he approached the end of his career, Jim received another set of orders, and in 1966 he was deployed to Vietnam where he served at Camp Carroll, located in the northern provinces of South Vietnam. Jim received his orders to return to the U.S. the day after the 1968 Tet Offensive began. Jim retired from the U.S. Marine Corps on October 31, 1968.
Jim met the love of his life, Dotty Waldo, while stationed at Quantico, VA. Refusing to take No for an answer, after 6 months and countless requests, he landed his first date with Dotty. They were married a year later on November 29, 1963.
After retirement from the Marine Corps, Jim and Dotty moved to her hometown of Missoula, MT, to raise their children David, Rick, Jim, and Ken. Jim began a second career of 25 years at Anaconda Lumber Mill later to become Champion Lumber. A creature of habit, he retired a second time also on October 31, 1994.
Jim loved living in Missoula. He took advantage of this beautiful country hiking with Dotty in their many favorite areas of Glacier Park, Pattee Canyon, and Blue Mountain, along with years of golfing with friends at Larchmont Golf Course and many other surrounding courses. Jim and Dotty thoroughly enjoyed the years of watching their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in music, school activities, sports, and showing livestock at fairs. His love of Griz Football and watching his sons play Little Griz Football, led to his becoming a football referee and a lifetime member of the Montana Officials Association.
Jim was happiest when surrounded by his children and their families, whether taking trips to Disneyland, camping, holiday gatherings, or a simple dinner and 'sleep-over'. Jim looked forward to family reunions, the most recent this summer when many of his nieces and nephews came from the East Coast. His tremendous skills as a cribbage player surfaced during family reunions placing him as the standing champion of the Kostecki Cribbage Board. He admittedly needed a little work on his pinochle game, though.
Jim was a man with great love for his Savior, Jesus Christ, his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a mighty soldier for God and served faithfully, next to his loving Brothers and Sisters in Christ, at Garden City Church. We celebrate his life, his love, and rejoice his promotion to be with Jesus Christ.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Frank, George, sisters Mary, Marge, Florence, and Eleanor and daughter Dorothy Lee.
Jim is survived by his wife and best friend, Dotty; sons David of Polson, Rick (Netta) of Kalispell, Jim (Diana) of Hamilton, and Ken (Heather) of Chesapeake, VA; grandchildren David Allen (Jessie), Cullen (Morgan), Casey, Danielle, Kayleigh, Jimmy, Katee, Clint, and Earl; great grandchildren, Sydney, Savannah, and Kinzley; sister and brother-in-law Diane and Walter Grubic; and 33 nieces and nephews.
The Kostecki Family wants to extend their deep appreciation to Partners in Home Care Hospice for their loving care of Jim this past year and to Dr. Sheehan for his diligent care.
