Last Dollar Road - Part 4 - Sawpit Road
As I explained in the description of the last segment, I made a wrong turn onto Sawpit Road. This is also a gorgeous drive, but you want to turn around once you pass Heath Ranch (well-marked with signs), where I encounter the cows. You do NOT want to keep going and end up on the curvy part with the sheer cliffs on the right. I was able to turn around in a hairpin turn and head back up to Last Dollar. If you don't want to see the Sawpit vid or the vid on the way back to Last Dollar, you can skip this vid and go to Part 7, where I will pick up Last Dollar at the turn I missed. If you are tracking the total driving time, subtract this vid (Part 4) and Parts 5 and 6 from the total, as both videos are only Sawpit Road.
Due to the lack of a video showing the road conditions along the full length of this famous scenic route near Telluride, CO, and the conflicting information online about the road, I decided to shoot it myself when vacationing there. I shot it with three cameras, duct-taped to my dash and cushioned with a sock. I do not think that the road is passable by car, unless perhaps if they regrade it in the springtime after winter show runoff. I agree with sites recommending small SUVs (at least!!!), full-size SUVs and trucks because you NEED HIGH CLEARANCE. I drove it a few weeks after the area had a lot of rain. I was on a Ford F-150, and I am a good driver and grew up driving on country roads. However, I don't normally drive along the edges of deadly drop-offs. In this series of videos, you will hear me go from sounding confident, to nervous, to scared and then relieved. I think for anyone who wants to see the best of the road - just drive from Telluride up to the first overlook and drive back down. Then take 62 from Telluride around to the north entrance onto Last Dollar Road and drive it to the intersection with Sawpit Road, and then turn around. You will miss almost all of the dangerous or scary parts. You will notice that I hardly stop for photos at all during the bad part. These videos are NOT accelerated - they are in real travel time. This will show you how long the drive takes, as online estimates are anywhere from two to four hours. Online travel sites say this is the easiest jeep trail in the country and one of the few passable by car (with high clearance). Online travel sites also will tell you that it is passable by car, passable by car only when dry, 4WD required, 4WD required only when wet, impassable when wet, etc. Well, when I plan, I want to know what I am getting myself into, especially if possibly dangerous road conditions are involved. I know some folks are macho, risk-taking and/or otherwise unmindful of risk - well, these vids are not for you and I will delete any smart-ass comments. These vids are for the folks like me who want to make informed decisions about what vehicles to rent, whether to spend money on a professional jeep tour, or try it themselves. I hope that this series of videos is helpful to others.

The Town of Telluride is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous town of San Miguel County in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Colorado. The town is a former silver mining camp on the San Miguel River in the western San Juan Mountains. A Telluride Historic District which includes some or all of Telluride is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and further is one of Colorado's 20 National Historic Landmarks. The town population was 2,221 at U.S. Census 2000.
Telluride sits in a box canyon. Steep forested mountains and cliffs surround it. Bridal Veil Falls is at the head of the canyon. Numerous weathered ruins of old mining operations dot the hillsides. A free gondola connects the town with its companion town Mountain Village, Colorado at the base of the ski area.
Telluride and the surrounding area have featured prominently in pop culture. The town of Telluride has served as the backdrop for several television commercials, is home to an international film festival, and has been the subject of songs such as Smugglers Blues by Glenn Frey, an essay by Edward Abbey, and eponymous songs by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kate Wolf, and Tim McGraw, and later recorded by Josh Gracin. Telluride is also known for its ski resort and slopes during the winter as well as an extensive festival schedule during the summer.
Only one road reaches Telluride year round, but there are also two off-road routes. Telluride sits in an isolated spot in the Four Corners region of Colorado where the New Mexico, Utah and Arizona borders come together. From the west, Colorado Route 145 is the most common way into Telluride, however there are two alternate passes to enter the town as well. Imogene Pass is the more forgiving of the two passes, though it still requires 4x4 experience and should not be taken lightly. Black Bear Pass is noted to be Colorados most dangerous pass. It is only passable in one direction because of a treacherous stair step section. Telluride is situated at an elevation of 8,750 feet.
On the eastern side of town, or the falls side, Bridal Veil Falls and the Generator House which sits at the top of the falls overlook the Victorian town of Telluride. The power plant house is owned by Eric Jacobson, who restored the house and the generator inside, which now provides about 25 percent of Telluride with its electricity. The house was originally used to power the Smuggler-Union Mine and requires an aerial tramway for Jacobson and his family to get home. It is the second-oldest operating AC generator in the United States, the first being the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant near Ophir, Colorado.
The town is served by air transportation via Telluride Regional Airport, the highest commercial airport in the United States. The airport is considered challenging by pilots because of frequent adverse weather conditions, high altitude, and the extremely rugged mountain terrain which surrounds the airport on nearly all sides.

A couple of awesome friends and I went on a hike in Telluride and found the Lost Dollar Hut, a fabulous place to spend a night at 12,000ft. I brought my camera and took a very amateur video along the way. Here's the result. Enjoy it. Hope you don't get too motion sick :)
