Η Λατώ (γενική της Λατούς) ήταν μία από τις δύο αρχαίες ομώνυμες πόλεις της Κρήτης, καλούμενη επί ρωμαιοκρατίας Λατώ η Ετέρα τα ερείπια της οποίας βρίσκονται περίπου 3 χιλιόμετρα από το χωριό Κριτσά στο νομό Λασιθίου. Η πόλη ήταν κτισμένη σε σημείο το οποίο προσέφερε αμυντική κάλυψη, έχοντας θέα προς τον κόλπο Μιραμπέλου, μεταξύ δύο κορυφών που αποτέλεσαν τις δύο ακροπόλεις της. Αν και η πόλη πιθανόν να προϋπήρχε της άφιξης των Δωριέων, εντούτοις τόσο το όνομα όσο και η αμυντική μεσόγεια θέση της αποδεικνύουν την από Δωριέων ίδρυσή της. Τα δε ερείπια αυτής χρονολογούνται από την Δωρική περίοδο (5ος και 4ος αιώνας π.Χ.). Η πόλη καταστράφηκε περίπου το 200 π.Χ., όμως το επίνειό της, Λατώ η προς Καμάρα που βρίσκεται κοντά στον Άγιο Νικόλαο, χρησιμοποιούταν και κατά τη διάρκεια της Ρωμαϊκής κυριαρχίας στο νησί. Το γεγονός αυτό οδήγησε σε σύγχυση, καθώς ο Στέφανος Βυζάντιος ανέφερε ότι ο Χένιος, Κρητικός ιστορικός, θεωρούσε πως η Καμάρα και η Λατώ ήταν ένα και το αυτό. Οι σύγχρονοι μελετητές όμως διαχωρίζουν πλέον τις δύο πόλεις.
Αναφορικά με την ονομασία της πόλης υπάρχουν προτάσεις ότι ονομάστηκε από την θεά Λητώ (η Δωρική μορφή του ονόματος της θεάς ήταν Λατώ), και αναφέρεται σε πινακίδες Γραμμικής Β ως RA-TO. Στην αρχαία Λατώ επίσης κυκλοφόρησαν νομίσματα που απεικόνιζαν τη θεά Ειλείθυια η οποία φαίνεται να ήταν η σημαντικότερη θεά της πόλης.
Ο Νέαρχος, ναύαρχος του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου, γεννήθηκε στη Λατώ.

Τα ερείπια της αρχαίας Λατούς βρίσκονται περίπου 3km βόρεια της Κριτσάς, διάσπαρτα σε ένα διάσελο που ενώνει δύο λόφους σε υψόμετρο περίπου 380m. Η τοποθεσία αυτή έχει εκπληκτική θέα στον κόλπο του Μιραμπέλου.
Το όνομα Λατώ προέρχεται από την δωρική απόδοση της θεάς Λητώς, που πιθανόν λατρευόταν εδώ. Ωστόσο, επίσημη προστάτιδα της πόλης ήταν η θεά του τοκετού, Ειλείθυια, η οποία απεικονίζεται στα νομίσματα της Λατούς.
Η πόλη υπήρχε από τη Μινωική εποχή, αλλά ήκμασε μετά την κάθοδο των Δωριέων, ενώ κατοικούνταν και μετά την Ρωμαϊκή Εποχή, όταν άρχισε να φθίνει. Η Λατώ αποτέλεσε μια από τις ισχυρότερες πόλεις της Κρήτης, όπως φαίνεται κι από τις συμφωνίες με άλλες πόλεις που έχουν διασωθεί. Το λιμάνι της πόλης βρισκόταν στη θέση του σημερινού Αγίου Νικολάου και ονομαζόταν Καμάρα.
The ruins of ancient Lato are located approximately 3km north of Kritsa, scattered between two hills at an altitude of 380m. This site has stunning views over the bay of Mirabello.
The name Lato is taken after the Dorian pronunciation of the goddess Leto, who probably was worshiped here. However, the patron of the city was the goddess of childbirth, Eileithyia, who is depicted on the coins of Lato.
The town existed in the Minoan period, but actually flourished after the Dorian invasion. It as inhabited till the Roman era, when it started to decline. Lato was one of the strongest cities in Crete, as evidenced by the agreements (inscriptions have survived) with other towns. The port of Lato was on the site of today’s Agios Nikolaos and was named Kamara.
