Latvia: Hundreds commemorate Waffen SS Latvian Legion in Riga
Activists and former members of the Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS marched through Riga on Tuesday as part of their annual commemoration of members of the unit who lost their lives fighting on the Nazi German side during World War II.
Hundreds gathered at the Cathedral of St. John before marching to Dome Square and then towards the Freedom Monument, where they commemorated the Latvian Legion's battle with the Red Army near the town of Pskov in 1943.

Riot in Riga, Latvia, 13/01/2009
A peaceful demonstration in Doma square, Riga, Latvia with 10000 participants against Latvian government's mishandling of economic crisis and poor economic situation transformed into agression and all-out riot shortly after demonstration's official end. About 1000 people tried to storm Saeima (Latvia's government headquarters) and attacked riot police with cobblestones and bottles. Police cars were set ablaze and turned over, shops were looted and windows smashed. Police responded to crowd's actions with truncheons, tear gas and firing rubber bullets. For first time in independent Latvia's history police declared high alert in capital. There were 106 people arrested and for 51 people (among them - policemen) medical care was needed. Riot has been described as one of the worst from 1991's collapse of Soviet Union.
In this video people can be seen storming Saeima and chanting Atlaist Saeimu! (Dismiss Saeima!)
November 18 – Latvian Independence Day!
Freedom in our mind, faith in the words, pride in our souls.
Proclamation Day of the Republic of Latvia is celebrated annually on 18 November. It marks the anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence of Latvia by the People's Council of Latvia in 1918.
November the 18, 1918 is one of the most significant dates in the history of Latvia. Almost 100 years ago “The Act of Independence”, which established the Latvian statehood, was proclaimed. Three years later all leading world states recognized Latvian independence. After the restoration of its independence at the end of the 20th century, November the 18th becomes one of the most significant holidays which is called the Day of Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, or Latvian Independence Day.
For more than 20 years Latvian Independence Day has become one of the most popular holidays in Latvia. A lot of events dedicated to this day are organized in all cities and town in Latvia since the beginning of November. The extensive programme of these events includes various activities: concerts, exhibitions, evenings with artists and writers, etc. On November the 11th Latvia celebrates Lacplesis Day to commemorate the memory of all Latvian soldiers who fell in the freedom fight. The military parade as well as lots of concerts and exhibitions are held on this day.
November the 18th is a public holiday in Latvia. Daugavpils celebrates this day with a lot of festive events around the city, free concerts and performances on the main square. In the evening the Daugavpils Mayor addresses the citizens. The official celebration ends with festive fireworks. There are always a lot of people on the square and in the city centre who continue to celebrate Latvian Independence Day until late at night.
If you happen to visit Latvia around these dates, you should visit one of the concerts or one of many other events. This is a fantastic opportunity to get to know more about Latvian culture and histor

LATVIA: NAZI WAR CRIMES IN LATVIA
English/Nat
XFA
Prosecutors from seven countries compared evidence on Nazi war crimes in Latvia, particularly the Rumbula killing field, at an official meeting in the capital Riga.
The main targets of the conference are 86-year-old Konrads Kalejs and 87-year-old Karlis Ozols, who are both currently living in Australia.
Representatives from Britain, Canada, Germany, Israel, Russia, Australia and the U-S discussed the investigation into the suspected World War Two criminals.
The old pine forest is now circled by car dealerships and littered with abandoned tires and scrap metal.
Most passers-by would hardly recognize it as site of one of the worst atrocities of the Nazi era.
In just two days in 1941 some 25-thousand Jews were put to death here, on the outskirts of Latvia's capital Riga, just off a busy four-lane highway to Moscow.
During the 1941-1944 Nazi occupation, 90 per cent of Latvia's 90-thousand Jews perished.
The Rumbula massacres stood out in their gruesome assembly line efficiency.
On November 30 1941 the Nazis, including Germans and Latvians, swept into the Jewish ghetto, roused men, women and children, and forced them onto the cobblestone streets.
To lull people into cooperating in their own death march, they were told they were being sent to a new camp and to pack a suitcase, according to the director of Riga's Jewish museum.
The victims, many who were aware they were doomed, walked through the ghetto's barbed wire gates to Rumbula, 6 miles away.
Stripped naked, they were beaten and kicked through a gauntlet, one by one, to the pits.
Then each was shot in the back of the head.
German SS officers bragged they'd used 25-thousand bullets at Rumbula.
This was a bullet per murder, according to the Latvian-American historian Andrew Ezergailis, the leading expert on Nazi atrocities in Latvia.
59 years after, the hunt for Nazi killers is still on.
At the meeting on Friday between prosecutors from seven countries, who were invited by Latvia to compare evidence on war crimes, attention was focused on the Rumbula killing field.
The main targets of the conference are Konrads Kalejs and Karlis Ozols.
Both reportedly were officers in the Arajs Kommando, a Nazi death squad staffed mostly by Latvians and involved in various massacres, including those at Rumbula.
Kalejs and Ozols now live in Australia and have denied involvement.
Latvian prosecutors have been preparing war crimes charges against Kalejs based on evidence he served as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp at Salaspils, a few miles from Rumbula.

The conference itself can not influence the juridical status of Konrads Kalejs. His status will change only when he is charged. As of now, he's not charged. We asked our colleagues to provide some additional evidence on the case.
SUPER CAPTION: Janis Maizitis, Prosecutor General of Latvia
One purpose of the conference was to scrutinize the strength of Latvia's evidence against Kalejs and determine if it met international legal standards.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I'm just pleased to be here and impressed with the amount of work that the Latvian government has been doing on these matters and on behalf of Canada we are willing to offer complete cooperation with any materials that we can provide and so on.
SUPER CAPTION: Max Walpert, Department of Justice of Canada
If Kalejs or Ozols were indicted, extradited and put on trial, it would be the first time an alleged Nazi would face a Latvian court on genocide charges since the Baltic state regained independence.

SUPER CAPTION: Carmela Skorik
But they later said they needed to investigate the matter further.

LIVE from Riga at march held to honour Waffen SS Latvian Legion
Activists and former members of the Latvian Legion of the Waffen SS are due to march through Riga on Monday as part of their annual commemoration of members of the unit who lost their lives fighting on the Nazi German side during World War II.
Last year’s march saw hundreds gather at the Cathedral of St. John before marching to Dome Square and then towards the Freedom Monument, to commemorate a battle with the Red Army near the town of Pskov in 1943. Later that day protesters staged a counter-demonstration in which they symbolically ‘disinfected’ the area surrounding the Freedom Monument with soap and water.

Latvia: Is Russia still the enemy? | VPRO Documentary
In Latvia the Soviet era is still visible, although the government tries to let the past be past. How is the relationship between Latvia and Russia nowadays? How is it for people in Latvia to live with a heritage that has become a burden? A documentary about Latvia and its past and new relationship with Russia.
The Baltic states still have a clear memory of the Soviet Union domination. Although Latvia is a NATO country, the fear of the Russians can be felt. Jelle visits a Latvian partisan, who fought the Soviets from the dense forests for years. And we visit the city of Daugavpils, where ninety percent of the people are Russian. How do they see Putin?
In this eight-part travel series the Dutch journalist and author Jelle Brandt Corstius travels through Russia and visits the neighbor countries Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. What image do the Russians have of their neighbors and vice versa? What are the relations between the powerful Russia and the other former Soviet republics? And how do the countries around Russia treat their Russian inhabitants? A series about propaganda and identity.
Latvia is probably the only country where the SS still gather every year. The veterans of the Latvian Legion fought alongside the Nazi`s in their own SS brigade. On March 16 they celebrate a battle in which they defeated the Red Army. For Latvians Germans are the liberators. Corstius meets veterans and explains why Latvian are still called `fascists` until a real fight on the street rises around this question.
One of the Soviet´s prisons in Latvia is now a museum, which draws thousands of visitors every year. The building has been left as it was. As a tourist you can book a tour and experience life as a prisoner. An Interrogation Russian style is included in the ticket, if you pay extra you can spend even a night in an isolation cell. How is it to experience such a tour and why are people doing it? While Russia is glorifying its Soviet past, Latvia is banishing it or making an attraction of it. In Europe, the Baltic states are the fiercest opponents of Putin´s Russia. Cortsius meets Sandra Kalniete, founder of the Latvian Popular Front, who fought for Latvian independence and became the first Foreign Minister.

The hidden truth about Ukraine - Part 1
“Gunfire aimed at protesters on Kiev’s Independence Square, also known as the Maidan, was delivered in winter 2014 by the mercenaries who had arrived in Kiev for the purpose of organizing disorders,” lawyer Alexander Goroshinsky told 112. Ukraina channel on Tuesday, as reported in Tass on December 13th.
In a dramatic development in the trial in Kiev of several Berkut police officers accused of shooting civilians in the Maidan demonstrations in February 2014, the defence has produced two Georgians who confirm that the murders were committed by foreign snipers, at least 50 of them, operating in teams. The two Georgians, Alexander Revazishvili and Koba Nergadze have agreed to testify by video from Tbilisi, if permitted, as they feared for their lives if brought to Kiev.
The defence lawyer stated,
“The eyewitnesses said they had seen with their own eyes a group of people who had received weapons and cartridges and who would deliver fire afterwards from the building of the Conservatoire. Nergadze also saw snipers at the roof of Hotel Ukraine. They know the individuals personally. Besides, they know the organizers and clients and are ready to give their names, as well as the names of the perpetrators.”
“In all, about fifty mercenaries arrived in Kiev then and they were involved in the events on the Maidan afterwards and fired at the protesters on February 20,” Goroshinsky went on. “The mercenaries split into groups of ten men each and were dispatched to different spots where from they delivered fire.”
“Each of them [the mercenaries] received $5,000 for the job done,” he said. “In other words, these people had been brought [to Kiev] with a well-specified task to create a conflict.”
The western media and leaders quickly blamed the Yanukovych government for the killings during the Maidan demonstrations, but more evidence has become available indicating that the massacre in Kiev of police and civilians – which led to the escalation of protests, leading to the overthrow of the Yanukovych government – was the work of snipers working on orders of government opponents and their NATO controllers using the protests as a cover for a coup.
No reliable evidence about “third force” foreign snipers or organizers of the massacre has been found… Because of various evidence of US government backing of the Maidan opposition, its involvement in the Maidan government selection and policy decisions, and its past record of supporting or organizing regime change in other countries, additional research is needed to examine if there was any involvement of the US government in the violent overthrow of the Ukrainian government. “
Well, now we have that evidence.
In the November 16 article in the Italian journal Il Giornale, and repeated on Italian TV Canale 5, journalist Gian Micalessin revealed that 3 Georgians, all trained army snipers, and with links to Mikheil Saakashvili and Georgian security forces were ordered to travel to Kiev from Tbilisi during the Maidan events. It is two of these men that are now being called to testify in Kiev.
On the 18th of February they were given weapons and two of them took up positions at the Hotel Ukraina overlooking Maidan Square while the third was positioned in the Conservatory. Other snipers were positioned in other buildings to fire into the square. Prior to that they met with, among other people, an American soldier in uniform, a claimed “former” member of the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division, who gave them orders on what to do, which it turned out to be was to shoot into Maidan Square randomly targeting people, protestors and police alike, to create fear and confusion, to implicate the government forces as the shooters, to create the chaos necessary in order to undermine the government of President Yanukovych, who fled shortly after the event realising his own life was in danger. The name of the American soldier, or the alias he used, was Brian Christopher Boyenger. He showed up later as an adviser to the Ukrainian Georgian Legion. One of the snipers stated,
“Once, I guess around February 15, Mamulashvili personally visited our tent. There was another guy with him wearing a uniform. Mamulashvili introduced him to us and told us he was an American military guy and will be our instructor.”
Another stated,
“This American was Brian Christopher Boyenger, a “former” soldier, a sniper, from the 101st Airborne Division.”
“He was the one who gave us orders.”

Riga Castle in September 2008.wmv
Come join TheCeļotājs visit to the outside area of the Riga Castle located at Pils laukums 3. The castle was built in 1330. In 1484 though, it was pulled down by the Rigans who had conquered it from the Livonian Order. In 1491, the Order came back and ordered it to be rebuilt. The construction was completed in 1515. When the order ceased to exist in 1562, the castle became part of the Riga defense system.
The Steeple atop the Riga Castle
The three stars represent the three provinces that make up Latvia. The three provinces are
Vidzemes [Livland, Lifljandskaya] with the center in Rīga [Riga, Riga]
Kurzemes [Kurland, Kurljandskaya] with the center in Jelgava [Mitau, Mitava]
Vitebskas [Witebsk, Vitebskaya] with the center in Vitebska [Witebsk, Vitebsk]
There is a story about this castle, like most castles, and this one is about a witch and her daughter:
When Poland gained power in Riga, the Swedes came and wanted the city. The daughter of the Polish king was a real-life witch who climbed up to the tower and sat there in protest. She bewitched all the bullets so that they rolled back and didn't even touch her.
At last, a very clever soldier called Peter made friends with the witch's daughter and cheated a secret out of her: how to kill the witch. The only way you could was by shooting her with a silver bullet. Peter found a silver bullet and killed the witch, which actually just turned her into a magpie! The witch sank into the Daugava River, but before she did, she cursed her daughter with these words, You, tramp, sink a hundred fathoms underground! It is said that while the witch sleeps at the bottom of the river, not a single magpie will settle in Riga.
The Latvian government declared the castle its residence in 1938. Today it is the official residence of the President of Latvia as well as home to several museums
The Castle originally was a three floor building, which enclosed a rectangular courtyard, and had four rectangular towers in its corners. After the Castle was demolished in 1484 it was rebuilt with two towers replaced by round towers following the latest developments of military technologies. The Castle experienced vast development during 17th century when it was almost constantly under construction. In 1682 Arsenal was attached to the castle, it was torn down about one hundred years later, in 1783 to build a courthouse.
