The Leaning Tower of Pisa Replica In Niles Il.
The Leaning Tower of Niles is located on Dempster between Austin & Harlem. In front of the Leaning Tower YMCA. It was built in 1934 by wealthy industrialist Robert Ilg this is a ½ scale replica of the famous Leaning Tower Of Pisa in Italy. It is actually a shell that covers a water tower that served a 22 acre recreation area that included pools and a taboogan run. All this was built to serve the employees of Mr. Iilg's manufacturing company.
In the 1960's decendants donated part the park to build the YMCA and the tower stayed. In the 1990's over a million dollars was spent to restore the structure and build the pools that surround it.. Despite all that money spent less than twenty years later the site is fenced in and closed because of deterioration.

Travel-Leaning Tower of Niles
America's Leaning Tower was built in 1934 (600 years after the original), and for many years has stood in front of the Tower YMCA. It was a utility tower, made from steel, concrete and precast stone, designed to store water. A plaque at its base says it was built to honor the outstanding scientist Galileo Galilei. Camp Skokie
ISAS + the Forest Preserves of Cook County teamed up to give a walking archaeology tour of what was formerly known as Camp Skokie. Camp Skokie was a POW camp during World War II. While the camp's structures have been gone for quite some time there are still remnants of the camp in existence today. This video gives a brief history of the camp and images from the walking tour on FPCC land.
