The #1 question we get is “what is your favorite place” and our answer is always the same. It’s impossible to compare the beauty of two extremes. Lees Ferry is an extreme. This destination is a site in Marble Canyon on the Colorado River separating Arizona from Utah. It will feel like you’re at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and in a way you are. To make this destination even more magical, it’s directly below the Glen Canyon damn that is breathtaking in its accomplishment.
Horse Shoe Bend is a highly visited destination near Page, AZ. It was our first destination of SN1. Now two years later, we are at the same place, but 1,400 feet below on the water. Temperatures at Lees Ferry can reach well over 100 degrees, but the water temperate doesn’t change from 48 degrees. Fly Fishing at Lees Ferry is one of the few places in the world you can get hyperthermia from the waist down and heat stroke from the waist up!
Big thanks to Lees Ferry Anglers for the opportunity to fish with them and record a special day. Thanks to Captain Jimmy for showing us a great time and putting so many fish in the boat.

Fly Fishing the Colorado River with Lees Ferry Anglers
We fish for rainbow trout below Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River with Lees Ferry Anglers. Plus we delve into the brown trout controversy and the Park Service's plan to electro fish Lees Ferry to remove browns from the system.
Fly Fishing Lees Ferry for Rainbow Trout (Catch, Cook, and Camp)
Day 4 and 5 Death Valley to Lees Ferry:
Today’s video documents my travels as went from death valley to where I previously did a Rainbow trout catch and cook to Las Vegas, Nevada and all the way to Lees Ferry, Arizona. The final Major destination of my journey. I spent the next 2 days fishing and camping in and around this ultra-clear water for some native Rainbow trout. I was able to hook up to plenty of fish and wrapped the day up with a Catch n’ cook overlooking the marble canyon. Unfortunately, I dropped my hard drive the other day and lost a day’s worth of footage here in Lees Ferry but the final videos I do have are some of my best. If anyone knows how I might go about fixing my hard drive without paying thousands of dollars, let me know. Otherwise, ill hang on to it and maybe one day will be able to release this lost footage.
About this series:
This video series is capturing my adventures as I went on a 1,700+ mile road trip spanning 4 states and several unique and beautiful locations! Such as the Kern river valley, Death Valley, Lees Ferry, and everything in between. I have been planning this road trip for some time and based all of the stops around one big fishing road trip. This series will be about 7 videos in total, this being the first and takes you along through the ups and downs of my tour of the West. My only goals for this trip was to make it as cheap as possible, eat mostly fish, and document my travels to share and remember all that I have done. I can say for sure that these videos to come are by far my best and most unique to date. I hope you all enjoy my travels as much as I did. Each video will be spaced out about a week and covering the full 1,700 miles of my journey I’ve been calling the MainelyOutDoors Wandering of the west. Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out on the several videos to come. Enjoy!

The scenery in Arizona's Glen and Grand Canyons is some of the most spectacular to be found along the Colorado River's 450 mile passage through 6 states. Man has changed the river considerably since the days when John Wesley Powell first explored the Colorado River. Fifteen miles upriver from Lee's Ferry to the Glen Canyon Dam there is a pristine trout fishery of world class proportions. Downriver from Lee's Ferry, spectacular whitewater rafting through the Grand Canyon. Take a look back in time with historic footage of Georgie Clark, the Old Woman Of The River, who was the first woman to swim the river and the first woman to run guided trips down the Colorado River. Experience the awe of the giant California condors released along the Colorado River to reintroduce the specie to the lands from which they were nearly extinct. Talk with the field manager of the California Condor Restoration Project about their progress. Visit the rim of the Grand Canyon at sunrise for a truly inspirational perspective. Fly fish the Glen Canyon with Lee's Ferry Angler's guides Terry Gunn and Jeff English.
RAINBOW TROUT cooked overlooking the GRAND CANYON! (Catch, Cook, and Clean)
Well, this is, unfortunately, the final episode of this series, unless I can recover the lost footage stuck on my hard drive. Either way, this was an epic trip so I wanted to wrap it up in an epic way, and I think I accomplished just that! Starting off by catching some of the biggest Rainbow trout I’ve hooked up to all trip in the walk-in section of Lees Ferry and taking one of them all the way to the south rim of the Grand Canyon for a catch and cook overlooking the Grand Canyon. Overall this was an amazing trip and I hope you enjoyed the videos. I’m already looking forward to my next traveling adventure! Let me know where you think I should go and what I should fish for in the comments. Also, next up I’ll be posting a video addressing all the questions I’ve received. I finally got a chance to film it on my way back to LA so I guess the wandering of the west series isn’t quite over yet. Looking forward to seeing you all back in Maine!

Match The Hatch Ernest G. Schwiebert Fly Fisherman
Ernest George Schwiebert, Ph.D. (1931–2005) was born in Chicago on June 5, 1931. An architect by profession, Ernest Ernie Schwiebert was a renowned angler and angling author.[1] Schwiebert spent his childhood in the Midwest, attended high school at New Trier, north of Chicago, earned his bachelor's degree in architecture from Ohio State University, and earned two doctorates at Princeton in architecture and the history and philosophy of architecture.
He married Sara Mills in 1957 and had one son (Erik) and two grandchildren (Elisabeth and Turner). Having served in the Air Force, he specialized in planning airports and military bases. Traveling on business, he also visited some of the world's best fishing streams, feeding a passion that had begun during boyhood vacations on the Pere Marquette River in Michigan. In 1977 he left the engineering firm of Tippets, Abbott, McCarthy & Stratton, New York. He made scholarly contributions throughout his life as a writer, architect, and student of the art and science of fly fishing for trout and salmon. He wrote more than 15 books about fly fishing and architecture.
Ernie Schwiebert was a pioneer in the fishery conservation movement and was involved in the founding of Trout Unlimited, Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and the Federation of Fly Fishers. He has served as a Director of both Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and the Atlantic Salmon Federation, and on the scientific advisory boards of TU, FFF and The Nature Conservancy. In recognition of his contributions, a Trout Unlimited Chapter in New Jersey is named for him.
He was best known for his extensive writings about fly-fishing. His books include Matching the Hatch (1955), Nymphs (1973), Salmon of the World (1970), and the two-volume Trout (1978). He wrote numerous magazine articles and short stories which were published in such collections as Remembrances of Rivers Past (1972), Death of a Riverkeeper (1980), and A River for Christmas (1988). An often referenced and quoted writer, Schwiebert has over twelve references in Arnold Gingrich’s book The Fishing in Print and fourteen references in Paul Schullery’s American Fly Fishing, A History. Gingrich considered Schwiebert’s position impregnable as the leading angling author of our time and that he had an impressive ability to absorb entomological detail and convert it into pleasing prose for his readers.[2]
