There’s no doubt Hong Kong is one of the world’s most densely populated cities, and our government often tells us that there’s a land shortage here. In his Policy Address this year Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying continued to insist on the idea of developing our country parks for housing. Green groups and other organisations have pointed that there is in fact quite a bit of so-called “brownfield” land here that could be developed. And the Audit Department has revealed that land is also occupied by as many as 234 vacant schools, 80% of them primary schools, some of which have been left empty for decades. To stop at least part of that space being wasted, one group of likeminded people has made use of one of those schools, a former village school that used to belong to the Ching Leung Nunnery in Tuen Mun, by converting it into an art space.
Convenience stores are an inevitable part of Hong Kong, as of any city that never entirely sleeps. One particular chain has over 900 convenience stores in Hong Kong, with one outlet every 1.16 square kilometres. But convenience stores are not just an outlet for things you feel you desperately need in the middle of the night. At least not any more. How about a little “convenience store” art?
Born in South Africa to European parents, Lee du Ploy has since lived in Paris, Amsterdam and London before coming to Hong Kong. In all that time he has followed twin passions: art and psychology. In Hong Kong, one of those obsessions led him to set up his own gallery, the ZZHK Gallery. Organised by Blue Lotus Gallery until 24th of this month, you can see how his own art reflects his other obsession in “The Glass Façade” which focuses on, he says, “flawed troubled human beings”.

The ascension of Barack Obama to the White House was perhaps the most potent acknowledgement so far of the contribution that African-Americans have made to the history and culture of the United States, and an exhibition at the Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery called “Rising Above: The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection” aims to reflect not only the hard and dark times of slavery and the past, but also the fact that without its African-American population the United States would not be the nation that it is today. The exhibition is the first privately owned collection to have been displayed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and has been seen by over six million people in 24 cities across the United States. This is the first time it has travelled outside America.

2017 Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award - 25 Year Anniversary
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries the Pennsylvania Center for the Book are pleased to announce the 2017 Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, presented annually to an American poet or anthologist for the most outstanding new book of poetry for children published in the previous calendar year. This year's winner is Somos como las nubes/We Are Like the Clouds written by Jorge Argueta, published by Groundwood Books/House of Anansi Press.
Additionally, judges gave an honor award to Garvey's Choice by Nikki Grimes published by WordSong, an imprint of Highlights.
The Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award is named for the internationally renowned educator, poet, anthologist and passionate advocate of poetry for young people. Established in 1993, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award was the first award of its kind in the United States. The Pennsylvania Center for the Book, the Penn State University Libraries and Lee Bennett Hopkins share joint administration of the annual award, which is selected by a panel of authors, librarians, teachers and scholars.
The 2017 judges for the Lee Bennett Hopkins Award were Ernie Cox, Chair, teacher-librarian, Prairie Creek Intermediate School, Iowa City, Iowa; Emily Aguiló-Pérez, lecturer, English, Penn State, State College, Pa.; Katie Sue Buchholtz, children’s librarian, Bellevue Branch of the Nashville Public Library System, Nashville, Tenn.; Carolyn L. Cook, associate professor, Mount St. Mary’s University (Emmitsburg, Md.), Shippensburg, Pa.; Margarita Engle, author and winner of the 2016 Hopkins Poetry Award for Children, Clovis, Calif.

From Edison films catalog: A magnificent view of the Prado, from the balcony of the United States Club. The procession is headed by a troop of horsemen. Prominent among them is General Lee. Then come the soldiers, file after file and company after company; filling the broad avenue from curb to curb and as far as the eye can reach with marching men. It is the Seventh Army Corps. Great crowds of people fill the sidewalks; and through the trees that line the promenade in the middle of the Prado, are seen carriages and vehicles following the parade. The crowning event of the Spanish-American war! The great procession on Evacuation Day. 100 feet. $15.00.

Police chase in Marion County, Florida, United States, June 23, 2018 - On Saturday, Deputy Christian Guerra was conducting proactive security at the Pryme Nightclub located at 9355 SE Maricamp Road in Silver Springs Shores when he observed a driver, later identified as Patrick Rodriguez Emanuel (DOB: 07/13/1993), commit a traffic infraction and saw that there was an alert on the vehicle’s tag due to the driver having a suspended license.
Deputy Guerra attempted to conduct a traffic stop and Emanuel proceeded to flee. A police chase was then initiated and Deputy Guerra, his fellow MCSO deputies, MCSO's Air One, K9 and Belleview Police Department officers worked together to pursue the suspect. Deputy Guerra then conducted a successful P.I.T. (Precision Mobilization Technique) maneuver and disabled Emanuel's vehicle at the intersection of Maricamp and Baseline Roads. Emanuel then ran through a wooded area on foot and K9 Deputy Alan Lee and his K9 partner Zeus were able to track directly to Emanuel's location with the help of Deputy Guerra and Air One. Emanuel was taken into custody without incident.
Deputies later found Methamphetamine, Heroin and other drugs in Emanuel's vehicle. Upon further review of his dash cam video, Deputy Guerra saw that Emanuel was wearing a backpack when he bailed out of his car after the PIT maneuver, but he did not have the backpack on his person when he was apprehended.
After reviewing Air One's video, Deputy Guerra and other deputies were able to pinpoint where Emanuel dropped the backpack and located it Monday morning. A crack pipe was found inside that backpack. Emanuel has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Heroin, Possession of a Controlled Substance without a Prescription, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving with no Valid Driver's License, Resisting without Violence, and Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer while Lights and Sirens Activated. Emanuel also had an outstanding warrant for VOP: Possession of Marijuana less than 20 grams. He was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail.
