Birding on Kenai Trail - Lee Metcalf NWR
A place that I have visited many, many times, the Lee Metcalf National Refuge has always had a special draw on me. The series of ponds host a variety of waterfowl and other water throughout the year, and has one of the few extensive wetland areas in the Bitterroot Valley, it serves as an important stopover and breeding for these species. The Kenai Trail runs north from the terrific Visitor's Center, and contours besides a several ponds and draws. At the terminus of the trail, a viewing platform has been constructed (although in this day the big pond was completely devoid of life). As I hiked along the trail, dozens of Ring-necked Pheasants flushed from the cattails and flew like cruise missiles over the marsh.

The Lee Metcalf Photograph and Film Collection Project
In 2012, the Montana Historical Society received a two-year grant to organize, describe, and preserve Senator Lee Metcalf's photograph and film collections. Matthew Peek, photograph archivist for the project, discusses the background of Senator Metcalf and the history of the two collections. Peek details interesting aspects of Senator Metcalf's work and life; shows rarely seen photographs and film segments from the collection; and explains what archivists need to do in order to provide the public with collections of primary historic materials. montanahistoricalsociety.org

Things like staging the home, making repairs or minor improvements, or even simply painting the walls can be the difference between a home resting on the market and one that's sold fast.
Real estate in the Bitterroot Valley is different from other Montana mountain valley's. It's a vast amount of acreage with towns like Darby, Stevensville, Lolo, Hamilton and more. There is a blue ribbon trout stream, the Bitterroot River that meanders over 70 miles from south to north where it eventually meets up with the Clark's Fork River in Missoula, Montana.
Speaking of Missoula, the city is Montana's second largest and is home to the University of Montana. Much of the Bitterroot Valley is within an hour or less of Missoula, including the Missoula airport. It is also an attractive destination for shopping trips, fine dining and Montana Grizzly football and basketball games.
Just south of Darby is the Lost Trail ski area. This local ski hill and favorite receives prolific quanities of powder snow each year. In fact it had over 275 inches of snow in 2017.
Of course flyfishing the blue ribbon Bitterroot River is always a highlight of the Bitterroot lifestyle. The Big Hole River is not to far away either and it's waters are legendary for huge brown trout. This part of Montana represents some of the best fishing opportunities in the State for the avid angler.
The Bitterroot mountain range contains miles and miles of hiking and horseback riding trails also. This large mountain range forms the legendary buffer between Montana and Idaho and contains some of the most rugged and scenic mountains anywhere in the lower 48 States.
The authenticity of the people is what really makes the Bitterroot Valeey stand out. It's the kind of p[lace where a local logger and Silicon Valley tech millionaire might sit down to have a beer together in the same bar. It's the kind of place where people actually wave at you from their car and it harkens back to an era gone by in most of America.
If you would like more information on Bitteroot Valley real estate from the best agent in the valley, then simply contact Kathie Butts at 406-363-8114.
