Jim Thorpe Lehigh Gorge Scenic Rail Historic Train Ride 2013
This is a ride in June of 2013 on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Rail train out of Jim Thorpe, PA. The train takes a windy trip up north from downtown, for about a half hour. Then the train stops, the engine uncouples (unhooks) from the train cars, and then the engine switches to a parallel track to get to the back of the train cars and recouple to the line of railcars to take the railcars back to the station in town.

Reading & Northern: Fall in the Lehigh Scenic Gorge
On October 17, 2015, the Lehigh Gorge is abuzz with tourists and cyclists enjoying the mild fall weather amidst the onset of yellow and orange hues. No stranger to this location is the Lehigh Scenic Gorge train, powered by SD50 #426, running the routine excursions from Jim Thorpe to Old Penn Haven.

The train departs the old Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) station in historic downtown, traveling north along the Lehigh River which carved a winding path through the mountains. The CNJ and Lehigh Valley Railroads both had double-track main lines through the Gorge for many decades until their demise to new ownership under Conrail, which too, is long gone. In the present day, the track along-side of the trail, which is on one of the former railroad track roadbeds, is owned and operated by the Reading & Northern railroad. The far track along the hillside is operated by Norfolk Southern, a Class I railroad with over 22,500 miles of track in the eastern United States.
Though at one time several passenger and freight trains passed through the gorge, very few rail traffic runs through this region in the present, most of which operates through the night. The Lehigh Scenic Gorge Railway, operated by the Reading & Northern Railroad, is the main attraction on these rails, with hourly excursions throughout the day, year-round. The open-air cars provide a unique experience of this remote region.

Fall on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway
Fall colors are near their peak in the Lehigh Gorge State Park, and the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is a great way to see them. The GP30 on the front is an added bonus, and the whine of the EMD motors just adds to the experience. Keep an eye out for steam locomotive #425 which was hauling an Autumn Leaf Excursion from Port Clinton that day.

Traveling Pennsylvania - The Town of Jim Thorpe
Yes we tried to see it all and I found a town which I must return to the town of Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania to visit it's many recreations like White water Rafting, roller coaster train riding, and old town roaming. This place was a blast.
It was actually an 1818 burro called Mauch Chunk possibly a reference to Bear Mountain, an extension of Mauch Chunk Ridge that resembled a sleeping bear yet has changed by 220 years of coal mining.
When the widow of Jim Thope found out the state of Oklahoma would no long fund a memorial to Jim Thorpe she approached the boroughs of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk and reached an agreement which included changing the name of the town and having his remains moved from Oklahoma (with the dirt) and the town has commemorated this great athlete keeping the story alive.
Jim Thorpe was the greatest athlete of the 20th Century and probably to date. This is the gateway to the Poconos mountains.
FACT: The large brick mansion in the video is where Florida's Haunted Mansion was design from. Don't use the D word... Boycott D....

Lehigh Gorge State Park in Pennsylvania
Slalakum: Where the campfire light meets the dark of night... Join us on our hike along the treacherous trails of Glen Onoko Falls at Lehigh Gorge State Park in Weatherly, Pa. The hike is very scenic as we venture up the mountain along the flowing waters , investigating possible signs of Big Foot as we go along. Also, there are many relics in the park from years long passed. The magnificent Hotel Wahneta once graced the mountainside at Lehigh Gorge, bringing in many visitors via the train. The falls also hold a legend of a love sick Indian maiden. It is said that she threw herself from the falls when she was forbidden to be with her love.
Legal argument over taxes threatens popular rail attraction
Original airdate: 10/8/2019 | UPDATE to this story: Jim Thorpe drops lawsuit against Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, wants to have talks with railroad
A popular Carbon County tourist attraction could derail.
Jim Thorpe officials say the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway may leave the borough over taxes.
Vintage coaches follow the Lehigh River, travel past Glen Onoko, to Lehigh Gorge State Park. The train ride is a popular tourist attraction. But a recent borough audit found the rail line hasn't been paying an amusement tax. This led to a legal argument, where the consequences could be anything but amusing.
The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is a 45-minute ride through Jim Thorpe and the Pocono Mountains. It's a big draw for tourists like Alston Boyd and Kate O'Neal.
It was beautiful, excellent..our first time on, O'Neal laughed.
However, a battle over taxes threatens to derail the good times.
It's the law that they pay this amusement tax. We certainly don't want them to leave.
Borough Council President Greg Strubinger said the rail line, which is part of the Reading Northern Railway, owes around $90,000 in an amusement tax, a tax 10 other businesses pay.
