Necesitando Al Otro | Needing the Other: Exploring Audience Presence in the Context of Installation
Necesitando al Otro is a multi-channel, interactive video installation exploring the Mexican migration. It detects the relative audience presence and, detecting a complete absence, enters the inactive state. In this state the video channels enter a phase of data corruption, analogous to the increasing denial of migrant struggles in our society. When the installation detects a partial presence (e.g. one or two people relatively nearby), it enters the partial state. In this state, the corruption of the video channels becomes increasingly more subtle, and the viewing less challenging. As the audience increases in number, the installation enters the active state, wherein video corruption becomes unnoticeable. This interplay of obscurity and visibility is designed to interrogate the Western Hemisphere’s indifference to the struggles of the Mexican migrant, and that an active interest in – and attention to – these struggles can provide a clearer understanding of our shared humanity.

Mayor de Blasio Announces NYC Municipal ID to Give Access to 33 City Cultural Institutions
Announces NYC Municipal ID to Give Access to 1-Year Free Memberships at 33 of the City's Most Acclaimed Cultural Institutions
See full list of CIG benefits here:
With the Municipal ID card, thousands of residents will be able to receive free benefits at members of the Cultural Institutions Group throughout 2015
Today, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the City’s Municipal ID, which will launch in January 2015, will give all ID card holders access to one-year free membership packages at 33 of the City’s leading cultural institutions, including world class museums, performing arts centers, concert halls, botanical gardens, and zoos in all five boroughs. The Municipal ID/CIG one-year membership will be comparable to each institution’s standard one-year individual or family membership package, depending on the institution, and will give ID card holders a range of benefits including free admission, and access to special events, and discounts to museum shops.
The 33 institutions belong to the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) which is comprised of private nonprofit cultural organizations located on City owned property. The first member of the CIG, the American Museum of Natural History, was created in 1869 and the group has grown to include a diverse cross section of institutions in each of the boroughs. The City provides capital, operating and energy support to CIG members and in turn each institution is charged with providing access to cultural services and programming to all New Yorkers.
The offer will be available to all Municipal ID holders from the day the program is launched in January 2015 through December 31, 2015. The membership term will be for one-year from the date the individual signs up with a participating cultural institution. The framework for the CIG membership deal came together with the support of City Council after Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl was appointed earlier this year. As a former director of a CIG institution, Commissioner Finkelpearl was able work closely with CIG chair Arnold Lehman and the organizations’ leadership in finding a creative and compelling strategy for CIG member institutions to open their doors even further to all New Yorkers. The package of benefits the CIG has developed demonstrates the central role these institutions play in New York’s civic life.
The 33 participating institutions are listed below by borough:

2. Bronx Museum of the Arts

#NYCultureTalks Diversity
The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and the Ford Foundation hosted a conversation about diversity among staff and leadership teams of arts and culture organizations. The event was held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 from 3 – 5 PM at the Ford Foundation.
This event was our first step in examining strategies for promoting diversity in the cultural field. We hope to create a framework to support organizations in confronting challenges and to share examples of success in addressing this critical issue. As the initiative develops, efforts will also encompass a survey of the staff of our grantee organizations and sharing research and best practices.
The event opens with remarks from Ford Foundation President Darren Walker and DCLA Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl followed by panel discussions with Teresa Eyring, Executive Director, Theatre Communications Group; Mariet Westermann, Vice President, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Roberta Uno, Senior Program Officer, The Ford Foundation; Eddie Torres, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Cultural Affairs.
Mayor Bill de Blasio Appoints Tom Finkelpearl as Department of Cultural Affair Commissioner
Mayor de Blasio today appointed Tom Finkelpearl as Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs. With more than 30 years of experience in museum management and arts education, Finkelpearl brings a deep commitment to inclusiveness and community engagement to the department and will be tasked with strengthening New York City's vibrant cultural life across all five boroughs.
Over the past three decades, Finkelpearl has earned a reputation as one of the city's most innovative leaders in his field and has developed an extensive record of enhancing New York City's cultural institutions—particularly those located in the outer boroughs. As executive director of the Queens Museum, Tom has led efforts to make art and culture more accessible—by reaching out to broader segments of the local community and engaging local residents in new and innovative ways beyond the walls of the museum.
About Tom Finkelpearl
A sculptor by training, Tom most recently served as executive director of the Queens Museum, where he completed a major expansion that doubled the size of the museum. Finkelpearl began his career in arts management at Long Island City's PS 1 Contemporary Art Center in 1982, which he joined as a public affairs officer, and then went on to organize a number of major exhibitions. In 1990, he joined the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs as Director of the Percent for Art Program, overseeing more than 100 public art projects across all five boroughs. After serving as Executive Director of Programs at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine from 1996 to 1999, Finkelpearl returned to PS 1 as deputy director, where he helped manage its 2000 merger with MoMA. He became executive director of the Queens Museum in 2002.
Finkelpearl graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and received his Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College. He has taught courses on socially engaged art and community involvement in cultural institutions at Queens College, New York University, and the Rhode Island School of Design. A native of the Boston area, Finkelpearl is married to Eugenie Tsai, the contemporary art curator at the Brooklyn Museum.

Gloria Ladson-Billings It’s ALL de jure: Turning a critical eye on the Northern Strategy
6th Annual Edmund Gordon Lecture
American public education is failing black and brown children, and “not because of some person or some political party gone awry,” but because “this disparity is baked into our society,” Gloria Ladson-Billings told an overflow audience in Teachers College’s Cowin Auditorium on Monday. “It is in our laws, our policies, our rules, our ordinances, our customs and our processes. And we must be willing to admit this reality.”
Ladson-Billings, Professor Emerita and former Kellner Family Distinguished Professor in Urban Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, delivered her talk – titled “It’s ALL de jure: Turning a critical eye on the Northern Strategy” – on the opening day of the Teachers College Reimagining Education Summer Institute, now in its fourth year.
Ladson Billings, known for her work in the fields of culturally relevant pedagogy and critical race theory, devoted much of her talk to demonstrating that northern states have been as complicit as their southern counterparts in maintaining racial inequity, from supporting and profiting from slavery through business dealings with the South to codifying discrimination in post-World War II housing law to creating a two-tiered public education system in the wake of Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 Supreme Court decision that struck down legalized school segregation.
