Located at the center of Rostov-on-Don is a monument in honor of Alexander Pushkin that was erected in 1959. The design of the sculpture is a classical style and is made of bronze. It stands on a high granite pedestal in red color.
Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright and novelist in the Romantic era. He is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet and founder of modern Russian literature. Born into Russian nobility in Moscow, he was raised in the household of Peter the Great. At the age of fifteen, he published his first poem.
Pushkin is best known for his famous drama play, the Boris Godunov, and his novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, that was serialized between 1825 to 1832.

Lenin Speaks - About the Allied Intervation in Russia (1918-1922)
Μετάφραση του λόγου του Λενιν, σχετικά με τη συμμαχική διεθνή καπιταλιστική επέμβαση στον ρωσικό εμφύλιο πόλεμο (1918-22):
Comrade (Red Army) soldiers! The capitalists of England, America and France are waging a war against Russia. They are taking revenge on the Soviet Peasants & Workers' Republic for her [Republic's] overthrowing the power of landlords and capitalists and set the example for all the peoples of the world. With money and munitions, the capitalists of England, France and America support Russian landlords, who are marshaling their armies from Siberia, Don River, and Northern Caususus against the Soviets, seeking to restore the power of the Tsar, of the landlords, of capitalists. No, this will NEVER happen! The Red Army has unified itself, it has arisen and started chasing the landlords' armies and the White Guards' officers away from the Volga, took back Riga, took back virtually all of Ukraine; it approaches Odessa and Rostov.

Vladivostok - Moscow (May 17 - June 2, 2016)
Vladivostok to Moscow. --- Trans-Siberian Railway Trip, May 17 to June 2, 2016
Our journey started from Vladivostok. Yul Brynner who stared in The King and I was born here; His statue is in front of the house he was born.
The second stop was Irkutsk. The city's old quarter reminded me the scenes from the movie Doctor Zhivago with it's traditional wooden houses and the old trams. As an admirer of the Decembrists and their women, we visited Volkonsky and Trubestskoy's houses. One could tell the owners lived rather extravagant life during their time in the houses. White Army Admiral Alexander Kolchak's statue stands in front of Znamensky Monastery, at the spot he was executed. The monastery also has tomb of Grigory Shelekhov, who claimed Alaska for Russia, and that of the Decembrist wife Ekaterina Trubetskaya.
From Irkutsk, we reached to Lake Baikal via Listvyanka; The amazing beauty of this Lake has to be seen to believe!
Moving on from Irkutsk, the train stopped at Novosibirsk for about 50 minutes, just enough time to taxi to the city center to see the dramatic Lenin statue with flowing cloak.
The industrial city Yekaterinburg is famous for the Cathedral on the Blood, which was built at the location the last Tsar and his family were murdered. We took a local train and then walked for about 40 minutes, along a beautiful, primeval forest, to get to Ganina Yama, visiting the site the bodies of the Romanov family were secretly disposed of originally.
Next, we stopped at Kazan. Ivan the Terrible conquered the Tatars' capital in 1552. Russia's icon, the St. Basil's Cathedral of Moscow was built to commemorate the capture of Kazan. Like Yekaterinburg, Kazan is a financially well to do city compared with other places we visited along the route.
Another over night train took us to Nizhny Novgorod, which was the first of the six golden ring cities we visited during the trip: Nizhny Novgorod, Vladmir, Suzdal, Rostov-Velikiy, Sergiev Posad and Yaroslavl. Rostov-Velikiy is my favorite. It has an unparalleled view of the Kremlin from lake Nero. We also witnessed a Sunday church parade and a Mass in Rostov. Suzdal stands out as an unspoiled village town. Nizhny and Yaroslavl are actually very large cities, their top attractions are the peaceful and scenic river sides. Vladmire and Sergiev Posad both have some most photogenic scenes.
We saved Moscow for the last. Indeed, Moscow proves to be worthy of the capital of Russia! There are simply too many fascinating things to see! The metro is handy, on top of the fact itself is a bona-fide museum.
We visited many Orthodox churches during the trip. Many have magnificent interior. The choral music were serene, peaceful and simply amazing!
The monuments in the country are many. Don't miss Victory park, and all-Russia exhibition center, both of Moscow. The monuments in these two locations are just awe inspiring!
We took the west bound trains for the journey. The east bound direction is more popular with leisure travelers. We had to change trains in each location mentioned above except Novosibirsk. Long distance tickets were either purchased ahead of time ( or at the time of travel in the station. Mid to late May is the shoulder season, it's relatively easy to get train tickets. Local train tickets were easily bought on site.
Train station in big cities usually has resting room with single/double/dorm types and clean linen, charged by the hour. We stayed in such a resting room in Irkutsk as we got there in the early morning. The room was clean, quite and rather spacious.
In May of 2009, I visited Saint Petersburg. Please see the video for the visit:

NORWAY: RUSSIANS MIGRATE TO SPITSBERGEN ISLAND IN SEARCH OF WORK
Russian/Nat
Russia's recent economic problems are forcing its people ever further afield in the search for a better life.
One of the most remote destinations is the Spitsbergen archipelago, a string of islands 1000 kilometres (600 miles), where the migrants find work coal mining.
But life is hard for the Russian communities, a recent fire which killed 23 miners is just the latest in a string of tragedies to hit the islanders.
The Spitsbergen archipelago was discovered more than 300 years ago.
But a harsh climate, where temperatures never rise above 10 degrees Celsius even in summer, prevented people from settling here for centuries.
Until 1920 no country even bothered to claim this bleak island in the Arctic.
But when it was discovered it contained vast untapped resources, the Norwegians won a claim for the area as its own.
Today, the Norwegian settlement of Longyearbyen looks like a typical Scandinavian town.
Norway spends millions of dollars a year to make life for its 15-hundred inhabitants as comfortable as possible.
Satellite T-V, cellular phones and the Norwegian postal service are just some of the trappings that help people survive the harsh climate and long polar nights.
But a 15 minute helicopter rides brings an entirely different world -- a Russian world.
Since 1932 the only other nation to take interest in Spitsbergen was Russia. And Russia's influence remains today.
A Russian mining settlement called Barentsburg stands on the fjord's banks.
The only thing that Norway's Longyearbyen and Russia's Barentsburg have in common is the Norwegian postal box.
Barentsburg developed around huge coal mines and now looks exactly like any other Russian mining town -- replete with its own statue of Lenin.
Coal mining is in deep crisis in Russia with tens of thousands miners out of work, so many have travelled to the islands.
Even though Russian mines in Norway are more expensive to maintain than mines back home, Russia refuses to abandon its operations here, for reasons of strategic importance and prestige.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I came to work here from the Rostov area in Russia because most of the mines there are shut down. Miners are out of work - that's why many want to come to work here. The money we get here is not what we've been promised, of course. But now that I am here, I don't have much choice but to work.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergey Ivanov, Miner
For the last few years coal production has fallen by half, and a lack of spare parts for machinery makes mining here an increasingly dangerous business.
But there is no lack of applicants for the two year, no-vacation shifts. Miners from Russia and Ukraine are queuing to get a place.
Victor Sadovsky is on his second tour and sees his work here as the only way to secure his future.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
My main goal is to save enough money here so I'll be able to buy something back home. Or better I'll start some small business. The only place for me to earn an initial capital for that is here. I have no chance to do so at home.
SUPER CAPTION: Victor Sadovsky, Miner
The town boasts no bars, no restaurants and no proper shops. The miners must dine in one huge canteen.
And all products are signed for at the company store with the money directly taken from miners' salaries.
The harsh lifestyle is not to everyone's taste.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Some folks want to come back to work here for a second term. But not me. The only thing I can think of is to get to the end of my term. And then I'll never come back here again.
SUPER CAPTION: Georgy Klimuk, Miner
The Russian mining community has had more than its fair share of tragedy.
And a gas explosion in the mines last week killed 23 men.
