Lepakshi is a village in the Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh, India.It is located 15 km (9.3 mi) east of Hindupur and approximately 120 km (75 mi) north of Bangalore.Le pakshi said Lord Rama to Jatayu, the bird, asking it to get up, says the guide a bit dramatically narrating the episode from Ramayana.Ravana had chopped off its wings and Lord Rama found the bird fallen right here in this village. That's why it's called Lepakshi. Lepakshi is culturally and archaeologically significant as it is the location of shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Veerabhadra which were built during the Vijayanagara Kings' period (1336–1646). The temples are the location of mural paintings of the Vijayanagara kings and Kannada inscriptions. Near the temple complex is a large granite Nandi bull. On a hillock known as Kurma Saila, tortoise shaped hill, are other temples to Papanatheswara, Raghunatha, Srirama, and Durga.[citation needed] Lepakshi is also famous for puppet show based on Hindu mythology.There is also a three-headed bull with single body carved on the pillar of main entrance pillar.

Lepakshi is famous for the Hanging Pillar in the main hall of the Veerabhadra Temple.The place is known for mural paintings of the Vijayanagar kings. Hanging Pillar
Every pillar here is a masterpiece. One of the most interesting one is that of the suspended pillar in the main hall supposed to be the reception hall of Shiva Parvathy marriage. This is the pillar which does not rest on the ground fully. There are about 70 pillars at this fabulous 16th-century temple of stone in Vijayanagar style, but this one is the best known and a tribute to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval India’s temple builders. However, it is a bit dislodged from its original position.It is said that during the British era, a British engineer tried to move it in an unsuccessful attempt to uncover the secret of its support.
Mural Paintings
The Lepakshi temple also has the finest specimens of mural paintings of the Vijayanagar period. We were informed that the 24 by 14 ft fresco of Veerabhadra on the ceiling before the main sanctum sanctorum is the largest in India of any single figure. The rest of the frescoes are also beautiful and show an impressive attention to detail with colors strikingly contrasted — black limework against an orange-red background with some green, white, black, and shades of ochre-gold and brown mostly applied to a stucco surface specially treated with lime. The fresco in the ceiling of ardha mantapa (ante chamber), which is said to be Asia's largest, measures 23 by 13 feet (7.0 m × 4.0 m). It has frescoes of the 14 avatars of Lord Shiva as: Yogadakshinamurthy,Chandes Anugraha Murthy, Bhikshatana,Harihara,Ardhanarishwara Kalyanasundara, Tripuranthaka, Nataraja, Gouriprasadaka, Lingodhbava, Andhakasurasmahara and so forth. However, these frescoes are peeling off in many places and in need of better maintenance and expert restoration
Nagalinga
Monolithic snake structure in Lepakshi is the Largest Monolithic Nagalinga in India. It is believed that, this Nagalinga was constructed in just 1 hour by the sculptures while their mother was cooking lunch for them.
Lepakshi Nandi
The monolithic Nandi sculpture in Lepakshi, is said to be the biggest monolithic Nandi in India. It is 4.5m high and 8.23m long. The big granite bull is on the main road, approximately 200 meters from the temple. It has been positioned such that it faces the shivalinga shielded by a huge serpent inside the temple. It is the second largest monolith in India, after Gomateshwara. The Nandi sports a huge kaasu malai, a bell chain, earrings and other jewelry.
Connection with Ramayana
The historic town of Lepakshi has been connected with an occurring of the Indian epic of Ramayana. According to the Valmiki's Ramayana, when Ram accompanied by Hanuman, met the dying Jatayu, they helped him attain moksha by uttering the words Le Pakshi, which is Telugu means Rise, bird. Hence the name, Lepakshi.
Veerabadhra Temple
The Veerabhadra Temple of Lepakshi is a notable example of the Vijayanagara architectural style. There are many peculiarities in this temple such as a rock chain, Vastu Purush, the Padmini Race Lady, Durga Paadam, Lepakshi saree designs, 100-pillared dance hall, beautiful and intricate carvings, paintings on the ceilings, the hanging pillar that barely touches the ground, the monolithic Nagalinga, the monolithic Nandi, the unfinished wedding hall and others. The paintings on the roof are done in natural pigments. One noted spot in the temple is the Eyes of Viroopaakshanna.
The best time to visit the Lepakshi is throughout the year.
From Bengaluru, Lepakshi can be reached by going west at Kodikonda checkpost on Hyderabad highway NH 7. Alternatively, one can take a bus or a train to Hindupur and then travel to Lepakshi. Lepakshi is 14 km away from Hindupur.

The Lepakshi temple, also known as Veerbhadra temple is one among the spectacles of Indian history which have hidden treasures in its chest. The Lepakshi Temple is home to the miraculous hanging pillars and a cave chamber where Sage Agasthya is said to have lived. Another thing which makes the temple unique and a place to must visit is a footprint that is believed to be of Maa Sita. As soon as you step inside the temple, you get the glimpses of the history of Vijayanagara kingdom by way of pictorial representations. 1. The Hanging Pillar: One of the most peculiar things about the temple is its hanging pillar. It is suspended in the main hall which is said to be the hall of reception for Shiva and Parvati's marriage. The miraculous thing about the pillar is that Among the 70 pillars of the Lepakshi Temple, this pillar is a salute to the makers of the temple. A British Engineer to know about the secret of its hanging in the air had made an unsuccessful attempt to move it which is the reason behind it dislodgement. To prove its uniqueness people often pass clothes from under it.
2. Naglinga: The Naglinga here is the largest Monolithic Naglinga in India. History says that this was built in just an hour by the sculptors while their lunch was being prepared.
3. Durga Padam or the footprint of Maa Sita: The Lepakshi Temple owes its fame to the remarkable attractions it has. One among these is the Durga Padam which makes the place more pious.
4. Lepakshi Saree Designs: On your arrival at this grand temple, you get a chance to glance at the beautiful Lepakshi saree designs that are carved on the pillars. The brilliantly carved textures are an epitome of creativity in the hands of Indian carvers.

The Hanging Pillar of Lepakshi Temple | Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh
The Hanging Pillar of Veerabhadra Temple, Lepakshi is located in the Anantpur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The distance of the temple is around 130 km from Bangalore through the NH7 (Bangalore-Hyderabad highway) and great for a day trip. After crossing the Karnataka-Andhra boarder keep looking for signboard directing towards Lepakshi. You can find it around at a distance of 3-4 Km from the border. Here you need to take a left turn on a road which goes to Lepakshi. From here temple is around 18 KM.

Lepakshi | Veerabhadra Temple | One day trip from Bangalore
Sri Veerabhadra Temple, Lepakshi is around 130 kilometers from Bengaluru. This was our first long ride together and we thoroughly enjoyed the Bangalore Hyderabad highway.
This travel video in Malayalam covers not only this mysterious temple, Nandi Statue and the Jatayu theme park, but also the Vineyards, Rose and Yellow Marigold fields on the sides of the National Highway.

As few online sources claim, the hanging pillar in Lepakshi has nothing to do with anti-gravity or levitation. The pillar by an act of a British architect has slightly changed its position and only one of the for corner touches the ground.

Did Giants Build Lepakshi Temple in India? Evidence of Suppressed History

Hey guys, I am in this fantastic temple at Lepakshi in India, and I am going to show you some solid evidence of giants this time. Did Giants exist a long time ago, and if they did, did they build these incredible structures at Lepakshi? Even though archeologists argue that this temple was built just 500 years ago, locals are convinced that this temple was built much earlier by gods of giant stature. Of course, there is this huge footprint in this temple, which could belong to a giant that stood around 25 to 35 feet, but we’ll get to this in a minute.
The best evidence is not this foot print found inside the temple, it is this giant bull carved 500 meters outside the temple of Lepakshi. The town of Lepakshi has the largest carving of the Indian Bull or Nandhi in the world. Made out of a single rock, this bull is exquisitely carved and stands nearly 15 feet tall and 27 feet long. Archeologists say this Bull was created just 500 years ago.
But there is something very strange about this bull, it stands alone. According to sacred Indian architecture, every bull must be associated with a lingam and vice versa. Ancient Indian texts confirm that the bull must be carved in front of a lingam. But as you can see, there is no lingam in front of it. Why would ancient builders carve the world’s largest bull and forget to put a lingam, which is the main god? Why did they create this brilliant monolithic carving and leave it alone? Archeologists don’t have the answer to this question, but locals do. The lingam associated with this bull is found 500 meters away, inside the temple walls. This gigantic lingam stands nearly 12 feet tall, and is protected by a 7 headed reptilian god known as Naga. This type of lingam is called Nagalingam and what you are seeing is the largest Nagalingam in the world. And if you look around this lingam, you see something interesting..there is no bull in front of it.
So, what is the purpose of carving a bull in front of a lingam? I have always argued that every sculpture in Indian temples was made for a reason, so how was the bull used? Ancient Vedic texts mention a way of worshiping the lingam, which is forgotten today. The ancient people put 2 fingers on the horns of the Nandhi, and viewed the lingam through it. Hindus strictly followed this routine until the last few centuries. This was the actual purpose of the bull. If you climb on this huge bull and look through these 2 horns, you can see the gigantic lingam, even today. Of course, this not only confirms that this bull belongs to this lingam, but something much more astounding. The race that created these carvings, must have been tall enough to view the lingam through these horns. Since the bull is 15 feet high, the ancient builders must have been around 30 feet tall.
Today, if you view through the horns, you will only see half the lingam, because the temple walls prevent you from seeing the rest of it. Why would the ancient builders create a wall, and a temple leaving the bull outside?
The lingam and the bull were built by a race of giants but the newer temple which is what we see today was built in the last 500 years. If you compare these 2 figures with the rest of the features, we can see a striking difference. The original builders used a monolithic architecture. Both these structures are not only much bigger than everything else, the lingam and the bull were also made out of single rocks.
The new architecture is quite different. Let’s take a look at these walls – huge slabs were cut and were interlocked, similar to Machu Picchu in Peru. Don’t get me wrong, this is also extraordinary technology, it is extremely difficult to fit these blocks together, look at the corners, but this was created just 500 years ago. The temple as we see it today, was built by assembling blocks of stone, but the original temple that existed here used single stone architecture.
