Isiolo Goverment Officials want Lewa Conservancy top Leadership to leave.
Isiolo county leaders are blaming lewa downs owner Ian Craig for what they termed as using Northern range land Trust (NRT) in a conspiracy aimed at favoring communities at the expense of others in the county.
Isiolo county governor Mohamed Kuti and women rep Rehema Jaldesa now have asked the government to investigate NRT engagement on security matters and at the same time said that NRT should leave Isiolo range lands.

Poaching
Over 70% of Kenya's wildlife is found outside national parks, and it will only thrive – and survive – if local communities become more involved in conservation and benefit from the presence of wild animals. Experience over the past decade suggests that community conservancies represent one of the most effective ways of conserving wildlife outside protected areas.
NRT has established a simple, cost-effective system to monitor changes in the abundance of wildlife within the conservancies. The Conservancy Management Monitoring System (CoMMS) is based on measuring the relative abundance of species within the conservancies, gauged not by their absolute numbers but on sightings by rangers. Approximately 200 rangers are now gathering data about wildlife on a daily basis over an area of 900,000 hectares. The focus has been on seven species which are a priority for conservation: elephant, eland, giraffe, oryx, lion, wild dog and Grevy's zebra.
In this photofilm NRT ecologist Juliet King provides an insight into some of the key findings of this ranger-based monitoring system. You can also listen to two podcasts which focus on specific aspects of wildlife management. In the first of these, Juliet describes a project to restore the population of hirola, the world's most endangered antelope, in Ishaqbini Conservancy. In the second, she talks about the relationship between pastoralist communities and lions, a species in decline in northern Kenya.
Preserving life and land in Kenya
In the Garba Tula dryland district in North-East Kenya, IUCN and the Wildlife Resource Advocacy are working with the local people and government to ensure the fair and sustainable use of the dryland ecosystem.
Livestock
Most pastoralists in northern Kenya live many miles – and many days' walk – from the nearest markets. This means they tend to be at the mercy of traders who offer meagre prices. However, an innovative programme launched in 2008 by NRT, Ol Pejata Conservancy and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is now providing pastoralists from community conservancies with better-than-market prices for their cattle. At the same time, the programme is encouraging community conservancies to improve their wildlife management.
The Linking Livestock to Wildlife Conservation Programme has established a set of criteria for judging conservancies. Those that perform best – in terms of conserving wildlife, good governance and improved security – have the opportunity to sell cattle direct to NRT. NRT then pays pastoralists to trek the cattle to Lewa, for a period of quarantine, after which they are fattened up at Ol Pejeta.
By 2014, the programme had purchased over 7000 cattle from 11 conservancies. The conservancies benefit from 2.5% purchase levy, paid by the sellers, and 5% sales levy paid by NRT. As NRT Community Development Officer Gabriel Nyausi explains in this photofilm, these funds are supporting development project in the conservancies and helping to pay for their management. Little wonder, then, that the programme has proved highly popular with pastoralists.

Lewa celebrates four years of no poaching incidents
The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy on Friday celebrated four years of freedom from rhino poaching, a fete attributed to involvement of locals and other stakeholders.
Residents and conservationists marked the World Rhino Day at the expansive conservancy, by walking alongside rangers to learn and have a feel on how the precious animal is protected.
Ms Pauline Longojine, the Sera Conservancy chairperson, Lewa head of anti-poaching Edward Ndiritu and Lewa Rhino Scientist Ian Lemaiyan spoke to DNKenya.
