LEWIS & CLARK CAVERNS
Tour guide Derrick of the Montana State Fish, Wildlife and Parks briefs underground visitors of the spectacular caverns of its formations and structures, Sept. 30, 2013. Lewis and Clark Caverns is Montana's first and best-known state park featuring the most colorful limestone caverns in the northwest USA. Named for Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, whose famous western travels took them along the Jefferson River in 1805, and developed for visitors by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the New Deal era. Lewis and Clark Expedition Summary by Montana Historian Hal Stearns in Great Falls, Montana
Hal Stearns, my uncle and a historian of Montana and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, gives an off the cuff, enlightening summary of the famous journey. Also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, it was the first American expedition crossing the western United States. President Thomas Jefferson backed it after the gigantic deal of the Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the young United States. The challenging adventure lasted from May 1804 to September 1806. The site of this video is in the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, Montana near the Portage. The Portage involved the Lewis and Clark crew carrying its canoes and goods by land for 18 miles to avoid the 5 water falls of the Missouri River in Montana. Historian Hal Stearns provides commentary and overarching themes of the expedition such as curiosity and discovery. Hal Stearns is a Lewis and Clark teacher and guide in Montana, USA.

Three Forks is a city in Gallatin County, Montana, United States and is located within the watershed valley system of both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers drainage basins — and is historically considered the birthplace or start of the Missouri River. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The city of Three Forks is named so because it lies geographically near the point, in nearby Missouri Headwaters State Park, where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers converge to form the Missouri River — the longest single river in North America, as well as the major portion of the Missouri-Mississippi River System from the headwaters near Three Forks to its discharge into the Gulf of Mexico.Three Forks is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area of approximately 100,000 people and the greater Bozeman demographic area of approximately 125,000 people.

Taming Big Sky Country: The History of Montana Transportation from Trails to Interstates
The state’s major routes evolved from ancient Native American trails into four-lane expressways in a little over a century. That story is one of difficult, groundbreaking, and sometimes poor engineering decisions, as well as a desire to make a journey faster, safer, and more comfortable. It all started in 1860, when John Mullan hacked a wagon road over the formidable Rocky Mountains to Fort Benton. It continued until the last section of interstate highway opened to traffic in 1988. Montana Department of Transportation historian Jon Axline charts a road trip through the colorful and inspiring history of trails, roads, and superhighways in Big Sky Country. Meriwether Lewis
Meriwether Lewis was an American explorer, soldier, politician, and public administrator, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery, with William Clark.
Their mission was to explore the territory of the Louisiana Purchase, establish trade with, and sovereignty over the natives near the Missouri River, and claim the Pacific Northwest and Oregon Country for the United States before European nations. They also collected scientific data, and information on indigenous nations. President Thomas Jefferson appointed him Governor of Upper Louisiana in 1806. He died of gunshot wounds in what was either a murder or suicide, in 1809.
