Lexington, Massachusetts Community Tour
- Lexington, Massachusetts is a historic town in Middlesex County. Originally settled nearly four centuries ago, the town is most famous as the site of the opening shots of the American Revolution. Today, Lexington is an affluent community that prides itself on the beauty of town land, the safety of its residents and the excellence of its public school system. The town has numerous parks, conservation lands, museums and libraries that provide exceptional opportunities for recreational and cultural activities.
The town was first settled as a part of Cambridge in 1642. Incorporated separately in 1713, the community saw light industrial development in the succeeding decades but remained predominantly agricultural in nature throughout the colonial period.
On the morning of April 19th, 1775, Lexington entered our nation's history when the British Army marched into town and were met by a local militia. Assembled by General Thomas Gage under the orders of British Secretary of State William Legge, Earl of Dartmouth, the British redcoats intended to capture and destroy a store of military supplies belonging to a rebel colonial militia. Rebel leaders had already received word of the Earl's instructions from sources in London, so the store of arms was removed from Concord and distributed to neighboring community. When the British troops arrived in town, a party of 77 militiamen emerged from Buckman Tavern to confront them, and amidst the ensuing confusion shots were fired on both sides. Eight colonists were killed, but a larger rebel force had already assembled in Concord, and once word of the fatalities reached nearby towns their ranks quickly swelled. At the North Bridge in Concord, several hundred militiamen fought and defeated three companies of the King's troops.
Today, the town commemorates the historic battle on Patriot's Day each April, with a reenactment of Paul Revere's ride and the battle itself drawing large crowds perennially. The town remains a popular tourist destination, with the historic landmarks of Battle Green, Buckman Tavern, Munroe Tavern and the Hancock-Clarke House all lovingly maintained by the historical society.

Lexington is the county seat of Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 18,978. It is located in central North Carolina, twenty miles (32 km) south of Winston-Salem. Major highways include I-85, I-85B, U.S. Route 29, U.S. Route 70, U.S. Route 52 (soon to be I-285) and U.S. Route 64. Lexington is part of the Piedmont Triad region of the state. Lexington, Thomasville, and the rural areas surrounding them are slowly developing as residential bedroom communities for nearby cities such as Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point.
History
The Lexington area was at least sparsely settled by Europeans in 1775. The settlers named their community in honor of Lexington, Massachusetts, the site of the first skirmish of the American Revolutionary War. Lexington was incorporated as a city in 1828. Silver Hill Mine, located a few miles south of Lexington, opened in 1838, and was the first operating silver mine in the country.
In the twentieth century until the late 1990s, Lexington's economy was mainly based on textile and furniture manufacturing. Since then, most local manufacturers have moved their production facilities to Asia and Mexico as a way to reduce costs and remain competitive in a global market. This caused the closure of most textile and furniture factories and has contributed to economic difficulties for a community that was heavily dependent on these two industries for employment.
The oldest surviving house in Lexington is The Homestead, built by Dr. William Rainey Holt (1798−1868), a physician born in what is today Alamance County. The Homestead has windows, sidelights and other Palladian details characteristic of the pattern books of architect Asher Benjamin. The home's owner was a Pennsylvania-trained physician who practiced medicine after relocating to Davidson County. An ardent Secessionist, Dr. Holt had three sons killed during military service for the Confederacy in the Civil War. His home was occupied by Union Army soldiers.
Following the War, Holt spent an increasing amount of time at his plantation Linwood, located southwest of Lexington, where he operated a scientific farm on his 1,600 acres (6.5 km2). As president of the North Carolina Agricultural Society, Holt was among the first to introduce purebred breeds of livestock to the state.

Massachusetts Oath Keepers - Lexington, MA - April 19, 2014
Lexington, MA - On the fifth anniversary of its founding, Oath Keepers gather on the Battle Green to reaffirm their oaths to the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. All of this on a beautiful Saturday afternoon amid the backdrop of local residents and tourists visiting the hallowed ground on the 239th anniversary of the skirmish which marked the start of the American Revolution. The United States Army Old Guard presented demonstrations of the Washington's Continental Army, the US Army Drill Team and Fife and Drum Corps. Short clips at the end of this video, with the full presentations in the can for later uploading.

Lexington, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the American Revolution, has a new battle brewing...one that might involve residents refusal to lay down arms.
Article 34, a proposed act up for vote at the Town Meeting to be held on March 21, 2016, would see the confiscation and destruction of Lexington resident’s semi-automatic firearms.
Harvard professor Robert Rotberg has taken it upon himself to enact, what he hopes will be “a movement against assault weapons that would capture the state and therefore maybe explode to reach the country.”
Article 34 includes any firearm that is semi-automatic and can accept a magazine that will hold more than 10 rounds. It also includes any magazine that holds more than 10 rounds. The article also has a provision in which Lexington’s licensed gun owners who own firearms included in the ban would be forced to sell, render inoperable, or have them seized and destroyed by the police department
