Concord Moment: Buttrick's Field of Patriots
In this field, Concord's Minute Men and Militia gathered before marching down to the North Bridge to confront the King's Troops on April 19th, 1775.
Excavating at Munroe Tavern
New technology helps determine age of old buildings, and the Lexington Historical Society is taking advantage of it at the Munroe Tavern, the Museum of the British in Lexington and the former home of an old Lexington family.
The American Revolution
In colonial America, some ministers were loyalists to the king of England. But those loyalties soon shifted after a few years of British taxation. The pulpit played a key role in encouraging dissent!
On the night of April 18, 1775, British troops from Boston marched into Concord.
The alarm was sounded to the colonists, and colonial troops confronted the British on the Lexington green. On April 19, 1775, the British troops retreated—marking the beginning of the Revolutionary War!
James Byrd, author of Sacred Scripture, Sacred War: The Bible and the American Revolution, wrote that one of the most cited verses during Revolutionary-era sermons and speeches was Galatians 5:1: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

Winter Storm Watches are in effect for much of the Tennessee Valley, including western Kentucky, for the potential of significant ice accumulation followed by heavy snow.
Video begins with State of Kentucky road crews prepping snow plows for deployment in the city of Princeton, followed by pre-storm b-roll of Interstate 24 with traffic moving steadily on dry roads at mile post 31.
Keith Todd, District 1 PIO of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, talks about the challenges road crews in this storm versus a storm with only snow will face.
Trooper Rob Austin of the Kentucky State Police follows PIO Todd with road safety tips for traveling motorists and the response efforts state police may carry out.
Video of Trooper Austin in patrol duties as officers prep for storm is included.
Trooper Austin is followed by Lead Forecaster Gregory Meffert of the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY talking about the challenges of forecasting this storm with it's mixture of snow and ice.

The Lexington Battle Green, properly known as Lexington Common, is the historic town common of Lexington, Massachusetts. It was at this site that the opening shots of the Battles of Lexington and Concord were fired on April 19, 1775, starting the American Revolutionary War. Now a public park, the common is a National Historic Landmark.

Falling from the Sky with a Parachute On - Episode 8

Last week, we left you hanging in mid-air. Because that's what Kimberly was doing, at Skydive Danielson in Danielson, CT. She was taken up in a plane to a height of 1200 feet and then dropped off – with a strapping guide strapped on her back. Dennis sat out this time.

With all four of our feet back on the ground, we decided to take them out to sea for a bit, with a Sunday morning cruise on the Agia, an old-time schooner out of Mystic, CT. – the last such schooner that still makes excursions there. Cruising out into Block Island Sound (which prompted us to sing the Billy Joel song “Downeaster Alexa”), we passed some notable lighthouses, including one where the daughter of a keeper once sang, her voice serving as signal to sailors in the fog. And we saw an island owned by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway (among other things) who once declared the island to be his own kingdom, as a protest against unfair taxation.
Back on land again, we went to pay tribute to the first inhabitants of the land, at the Wigwam Festival in Uncasville, CT. With many tribes participating, there was a dance competition for both men and women with many types of dancing represented, included war dancing, fancy dancing, smoke dancing, and grass dancing. The regalia (don't call it costumes) they wore were colorful and painstakingly detailed.
After a quick visit to Franklin Sculpture Park and 3 shows at libraries in Massachusetts; it was on to our first real visit to Maine (we'd passed through there just briefly several years ago), and our first stop was one of those classic postcard lighthouses. And while we may be new to the state, we certainly got our feet wet.

The commonwealth was home to the Salem witch trials. The Boston Tea Party helped spark the American Revolution, and the battles of Lexington and Concord officially began it with the shot heard round the world. And just before that, Paul Revere went on his famous midnight ride, crying, “The British are coming, the British are coming!”
