So what is Lhong 1919?
It’s an outdoor shopping and dining area that is made up of reclaimed warehouses and a Chinese Shrine that was built by the original Chinese settlers in Bangkok that dates back almost 150 years. I would say Lhong 1919 epitomizes the fresh wave of hip and artsy attempts to gentrify Bangkok to suit the taste of it’s growing population of wealthier and younger residents and international visitors who still want a bit of that old town feeling without sacrificing luxury.
Now there are a few ways to get to Lhong 1919 located south east across the Chaopraya river from the Grand Palace. However the recommended way to get there if you don’t have a scooter like we do would be to take the BTS to Saphan Taksin Station and take the free ferry Operated by Lhong 1919 every hour. This way you can avoid being stuck in traffic in this very busy area of Bangkok.
Now what you can expect to find when you arrive here is a Chang Beer Garden with a great river front view and a handful of high end Thai restaurants. Rong Si seem to be the main restaurant here. It has a very pleasant interior and most entrees seemed to be priced anywhere from about 7-20 dollars. Not a completely unreasonable price for a special night out or if you’re from out of town and looking for a fine dining experience instead of just doing street food the whole time you’re here.
They also have this more casual restaurant which we will come back to later in the vlog.
Now the bulk of the warehouses however were dedicated storefronts for fancy high end clothing, accessory, and home decoration featuring local artisans. Although I couldn’t afford 90 percent of what was being sold here, it was interesting to browse the stores as most of the products were unique to this location.
After you walk down the the row of werehouses, you’ll eventually end up at the main building located in the apex of the courtyard. It is a Chinese shrine that offers a pleasant contrast to the Thai buddhist temples. We found many people offering incents and praying throughout the whole day.
There is also a big event hall that seems to be available for weddings and we were also told live performances take place here on the weekend but we visited on a slow weekday when none of these events were taking place.
So after browsing the many stores and shops, we settled on the more casual dining option available here. I unfortunately don’t have much of what we talked about on this vlog but be sure to checkout Warrens video on Lhong 1919 on his channel linked below
Thanks again for checking out our vlog and see you guys next week for more vlogs about living and traveling in Asia.

Lhong 1919
[ล้ง 1919]
The site of “Huo Chuan Laung”, which means “steamship terminal” in Teochew dialect, is today known as “LHONG 1919”. Built by Phraya Phisansuppaphol in the 1850’s , it used to be a port for public steam- ships that is surrounded by a business center. The place was used mainly for rented showrooms and goods storage from overseas such as Singapore and Hong Kong between 1850 and 1910. Since 1919, Hua Chuan Laung was purchased by the Wanglee family who used it as their main godown site. For over four generations, it has been used as the Wanglee family business offices, staff residences, and storage for agricultural products. Lhong 1919 is also the home of Mazu, the Chinese sea deity, dating back to early 18th century. Her shrine sits at the heart of the compound.
The fundamental survey concluded that “LHONG 1919” is the last complex representing a Chinese San He Yuan design, remaining on the Chao Phraya waterfront. Because the compound is over one century old , it is automatically listed as a historical site, according to the Thai Conservation Act. With these significant facts, the proposal of “LHONG 1919” was initiated.
In conclusion, “LHONG 1919” is a high potential site which has an opportunity for further development as well as conservation. This is to find a balance between values in conservation and capital returns whilst offering public accessibility to the site. Consequently “LHONG 1919” has be converted for mixed-uses development where integration of activities supported by event spaces, restaurants art and craft stores, and a sanctuary.
open daily from 8 am until 10 pm.

Lhong 1919 Plaza, Bangkok Thailand
A new river front shopping plaza. Used to be a wharf owned by Lhong 1919 for import / export of goods on the river in Bangkok, Thailand. It's still very new and lots of unfinished shops. Restaurants are open and it's accessible from the major hotels on the East side by ferry boat.

Lhong 1919 廊1919@Bangkok

Lhong 1919 is on the Thailand Adventure Group's recommended list for Bangkok. It is a shrine to the Chinese Water Goddess, Mazu. We recommend taking a free shuttle boat from Iconsiam at dusk. Skip the heat of the midday for this one.
