Time Lapse - A Sunday Drive through Point Roberts, Washington, USA
May 29, 2016 - One great way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon like this is taking a trip across the border for a leisurely drive.
Join me on my 60 minute adventure through the exclave of Point Roberts, Washington, USA. I visit all four corners of this square-mile community, connected to the Lower 48 States only via road connections through Canada. Point Roberts features three major parks (Lily Point, Lighthouse, and Monument), a few of its major community areas (Maple Beach and South Beach), and the bodies of water that isolate this beautiful, quiet community on three sides.
Also, check out a great Canadian past time - buying cheap(er) gas and cheap(er) beer across the border. Even when the exchange rate isn't the greatest, it's still usually a deal. Note: Be sure to always let the customs agents know what you're bringing into/out of each country when crossing the border! There are limits to what you can bring, even if your visit is over 48 hours.
In the distance from Point Roberts, you can see as far as the North Shore mountains (north of Vancouver), as well as the skyscrapers in southern Burnaby and New Westminster. To the east, on a clear day, you can see the rest of the American Mainland in Blaine, Washington, with Mount Baker behind. To the south, the San Juan Islands, and to the west, British Columbia's Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island.
It's a beautiful little plot of land, and though many people think it should be a little piece of Canada (which would've made logical sense back in the day), I quite appreciate its uniqueness as what is, effectively, the largest gated community in the United States.
To book-end the trip is another light-speed trip down the main street of Tsawwassen, British Columbia, 56th Street.
At the end of the video I have provided a map of this adventure.
Enjoy!
Monument Beach, Point Roberts, WA
A rather steep hike from Monument Park Ithe west end of the Canadian/US border) brings you to this delightfully isolated and beautiful beach that overlooks the Taswassen Ferry Terminal and also Vancouver Island in the distance
The Clay Cliffs of Point Roberts, Washington
April 2012 - I go on a walking tour of the Clay Cliffs of Point Roberts, WA, one of the nicest little natural wonders right by where I live.
The Clay Cliffs are located in Lily Point Park, in the very southeastern corner of the Point Roberts penninsula - only a five minute drive from my place across the border in Tsawwassen, BC, Canada.
Heading South to Point Roberts
Ordered my new Sanyo VPC-E2 Waterproof camcorder from Amazon but the company does not ship to Canada. So I had it shipped to TSB :D Figured I might as well do another driving video clip. I was not thinking but that morning heading down south there was a beautiful sunrise. On the way back the mist was quite heavy. Enjoy.
EDIT: I just noticed there is a black frame part way through the video. Sorry. It was suppose to a text screen indicating a quick pit stop for gas :p

Point Roberts, WA
I love the quiet beaches at Point Roberts, a small US enclave that you can only drive to via Canada, it is close to the Taswassen Ferry Terminal. Not many visitors because of the border hassle, it is called the US's safest gated community :)

Authors@Google: Carole Terwilliger Meyers
Carole Terwilliger Meyers visits Google to present her book Weekend Adventures in San Francisco and Northern California. This event took place on Jul 21, 2009, as part of the Authors@Google series.
Life is a journey. Here to help you escape the bumps and enjoy the ride through Northern California is the thoroughly revised 8th edition of WEEKEND ADVENTURES IN SAN FRANCISCO & NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
Award-winning author Carole Terwilliger Meyers, who published the first edition of her book in 1977, invites you to visit the vast array of vacation wonders in Northern California. You can spend the night in a coastal lighthouse, play chess on one of the two largest chessboards in the United States, and pan for gold in an authentic Gold Rush river. WEEKEND ADVENTURES has something for everyone--from weekend warriors anxious to test their mettle to world-weary slugabeds who want breakfast brought to them on a tray.
Weighing in at almost 1 1/2 pounds, WEEKEND ADVENTURES is packed with interesting places to visit: the Santa Cruz mountains, the coast south to Morro Bay and north to Eureka, the Wine Country, the Russian River area, Sacramento and the Delta, Highway 101 north and south, the national parks, the Gold Rush Country, Lake Tahoe, and the Mt. Shasta area. San Francisco and the Bay Area--including the East Bay, Marin, and the Peninsula--are also detailed. Former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown says, Ms. Meyers love for the City and her familiarity with its abundant charms are evident in each entry.
Each destination includes information on what to do, where to stay, and where to eat. Helpful extras include the most direct driving route and interesting stops along the way. Details on family amenities are provided with each listing, and the text is filled with intriguing historical tidbits and unusual facts. Additional chapters are devoted to ski areas, family camps, houseboats, river and pack trips, and assorted other adventures.

Point Roberts Grass Landing
Landing in my Cessna 172/M on the grass strip runway 16 at the Point Robert's Airpark, 1RL in Washington State. This is a 2400 foot by 150 foot grass strip, the best maintained strip I have ever seen. This airport is probably the Northwestern-most airport in all of the lower 48-states. Notice the airfield owner, Robin Lamb, off to the right in a weed cutter.
Seminole Wars
The Seminole Wars, also known as the Florida Wars, were three conflicts in Florida between the Seminole—the collective name given to the amalgamation of various groups of native Americans and African Americans who settled in Florida in the early 18th century—and the United States Army. The First Seminole War was from 1816 to 1819, the Second Seminole War from 1835 to 1842 and the Third Seminole War from 1855 to 1858. They were the largest conflicts in the United States between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Taken together, the Seminole Wars were the longest and most expensive Indian Wars in United States history and one of the most expensive of all wars ever fought by the U.S. as a percentage of gross national product.
The First Seminole War arose out of tensions relating to General Andrew Jackson's excursions into northern Spanish Florida against the Seminoles beginning in 1816. The governments of Britain and Spain both expressed outrage over the invasion but ultimately, the Spanish Crown agreed to cede Florida to the United States in the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819. According to the Treaty of Moultrie Creek of 1823, the Seminoles were required to leave northern Florida and were confined to a large reservation in the center of the Florida peninsula.

David Kilcullen: Out of the Mountains: The Coming Age of the Urban Guerrilla | Talks at Google
In Out of the Mountains, David Kilcullen, one of the world's leading experts on modern warfare, offers a groundbreaking look ahead at what may happen after the war in Afghanistan ends. It is a book about future conflicts and future cities, about the challenges and opportunities that four powerful megatrends are creating across the planet. And it is about what national governments, cities, communities and businesses can do to prepare for a future in which all aspects of human society-including, but not limited to, conflict, crime and violence-are rapidly changing.
About the Author: Dr. David Kilcullen is the Chief Executive Officer of Caerus Associates. He founded Caerus around a simple idea: that responding to the needs of local communities can have mutually beneficial effects for governments, businesses and populations. Before founding Caerus, Dave served 24 years as a soldier, diplomat and policy advisor for the Australian and United States governments.
