Limbe Wildlife Center, Limbe, Cameroon
Today I visited the Limbe Wildlife Center in Limbe, Cameroon. It is run by the same people that operate the Pandrillus Drill Monkey sanctuary in Afi, Nigeria, so I thought I'd check it out. To be honest, the wildlife center is much more of a zoo that I had hoped. They do have large enclosures and they are rescue projects rather than captures, but I do hate seeing animals in tight quarters in the city.
Still, it was a good experience and Limbe really is a nice city. The people are friendly, the town is laid back, and there is a beautiful waterfront.
Oh, and it might also disappoint some people that I finally got a shave and a haircut in Limbe. I know that beard was getting pretty epic, but it had to go.
Tomorrow, I explore Limbe, Cameroon a little bit more. Hope you stay tuned.

Limbe wildlife centre
Limbe wildlife centre is focusing on conservation education by promoting awareness and appreciation for Cameroon's unique wildlife. The LWC is home to 15 species of primates, all native to Cameroon. Vrijwilligerswerk met apen in het Limbe Wildlife Centre in Kameroen
Altijd al willen werken met apen? Dan is dit je kans ! Word vrijwilliger in het LWC opvangcentrum in Kameroen. Het Limbe Wildlife Centre vangt dieren op die slachtoffer zijn geworden van de illegale handel in dieren en dierenvlees. Het LWC zorgt voor 360 dieren.
Verwaarloosde weesaapjes komen bang, ondervoed, mishandeld, gewond en getraumatiseerd in het opvangcentrum, het Limbe Wildlife Centre, in Kameroen terecht. Stichting Weesaapjes ondersteunt financieel het Limbe Wildlife Centre.
De nood is zeer groot. Deze weesaapjes hebben acute hulp nodig.
Daarom zet Stichting Weesaapjes zich met hart en ziel in voor directe noodopvang.

Dutch foundation Stichting Weesaapjes collect money to help the sanctuary who take care of Great Ape orphan babies. They are victims of the bushmeat trade and were sold as a pet. This is forbidden and the government will confiscate them and bring them to the Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon. More information: weesaapjes.nl

An evening, at closing time at the Limbe Zoo in Limbe, Cameroon, Africa.. We could not see all the animals as they had shut down the exhibits except for the monkeys. We missed the chimps.
Volunteer at Limbe Wildlife Centre
Limbe Wildlife Centre runs a volunteer program that allows individuals to participate in the daily work of the sanctuary. As a volunteer, you will be able to work hands-on with our staff and help to care for rescued primates, including gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, mandrills, and baboons.
Limbe Wildlife Centre, a rescue, rehabilitation, and reintroduction/release project, was founded in 1993 as a collaborative effort between the Government of Cameroon and Pandrillus Foundation. By providing a long-term solution for confiscated wildlife and working with the local and international community, the project aims to secure the survival of the endangered species of Cameroon.

Limbe Wildlife Center is not a zoo despite looking like one. It’s a center where primates that’s are injured by traps, rescued from torture of being pets, or orphaned are nurtured and rehabilitated and then released into the wild. Cameroon is one of the few African countries where many of the large primate species are found in the wild - western lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, and mandrills. It’s almost impossible to see them in their natural habitat - they are confined to impenetrable jungles deep in the heart of Cameroon and poached to near extinction. That’s why the Limbe Wildlife Center is absolutely unique in both showcasing these animals as well as releasing them back into the nature. Besides gorillas and chimps, the population of ultra-colorful (almost unrealistically so) drills and mandrills here is the largest captive population in the world.

Limbe Botanical Gardens, Limbe, Cameroon
Today I visited the Limbe Bontanical Gardens in Limbe, Cameroon. I'll admit I was more than a little bit annoyed that they wanted me to pay $5 just to use my camera in the park. Seriously Limbe Botanical Gardens??? 5 dollars to take photos?? No dice. Instead, I snuck a couple shots of the gardens and probably should have just boycotted it all together. I mean seriously, don't tourist attractions know by now that non-corporate photos are basically just free advertising and marketing??
Anyways, it's a bit of a short episode today in Limbe.
Tomorrow I head to Buey,Cameroon... and this is where I have my famous scooter crash. Stay tuned for that.

Gorillas at the Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) in Cameroon.
In October 2012, the ATA Site Inspection Team visited the Limbe Wildlife Center (LWC), a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation project in the South West Region of Cameroon. The center was started in 1993 by the Pandrillus Foundation, a conservation NGO, and the Government of Cameroon. Since this time it has become home to a variety of critically endangered wildlife species including the ellioti chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes ellioti), the drill monkey (Mandrillus leucophaeus), the western lowland (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and Cross River (G.g.diehli) gorillas, several species of long-tailed monkeys, including the locally endemic Preuss's guenon (Cercopithecus preussi), and various reptile and bird species. Many zoos in Africa are depressing places, but the Limbe Wildlife Centre is a shining exception. It houses rescued chimpanzees, gorillas, drills and other primates in large enclosures, with lots of interesting information about local conservation issues. Staff are well informed, and are heavily involved in community education.

Limbe is a beach town in western Cameroon. It's known for its black sand beaches and Atlantic surf. Limbe Botanic Garden has a herbarium and diverse plant species. The Limbe Wildlife Centre rescues and rehabilitates primates, such as lowland gorillas. Mount Cameroon National Park protects endangered mammals, including forest elephants. Within the park, Mount Cameroon is an active volcano with trails to the summit.
