Day Trips from Denver - Limon Railroad Museum
Day trips from Denver for Railroad History Buffs should include a trip to the Railroad Museum in Limon Colorado. The museum is housed in the fully restored Rock Island Railroad Depot near downtown, features many exhibits including an operational train layout that recreates the area during it's heyday.
The Depot is one of three remaining Rock Island depots in Colorado in it's original location and the only one restored.
For visitors who come from all over the world, it offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience a way of life almost forgotten when seven passenger trains a day stopped in Limon.
Up to eight freight trains daily still use the Union Pacific track south of the depot. Several times a week history comes alive as freight trains from Kyle Railway cross the track in front of the depot to connect with the Union Pacific Railroad.
This museum is adjacent to the Limon Heritage Museum, the saddle boxcar, an impressive outdoor collection of windmills and Limon's classic one-room, Pioneer schoolhouse
There is no charge for visiting these museums which operate seasonally. Calling ahead to confirm hours 719-775-8605

Fishing A Dead Fishing Pond Near A Historic Railroad Yard
I read a few great articles on how great the fishing is at the Doug Kissel Fishing Pond in Limon, Colorado. I drove out to Limon with our two oldest children so we could get a piece of the great fishing. The temperatures were hot and the fishing was not. We fishing for at least 3 full hours without a single bite. It turns out, all the fish were killed last winter during a complete freeze-over. There was not enough oxygen in the water to allow the fish to survive. Crayfish appeared to be the only living thing in this nice-looking pond, so we tried our hand at catching some crayfish. We also took a long break in the middle of the day to visit the historic Limon Heritage Museum & Railroad Park Complex.
Thanks for watching!

Nature's Counterfeiters: Lem and Steve Ward
Lemuel T. Ward (1896-1984) and Stephen Ward (1895-1976) are world renowned as decoy makers. Working as a team over their long careers, the two brothers produced a wide variety of decoys in many different styles. Early on Lem and Steve made working decoys, however they gradually progressed into making more decorative renderings of birds. It is the lifelike detail and innovation that the Ward Brothers brought to decoy making that they are now so well regarded for. The new film Nature's Counterfeiters: Lem and Steve Ward, showcases the story of the Ward Brothers by displaying their lives, legacy, and artwork.

The Mysterious Edwin Carter and the Free Mason Connection
This multiple award-winning film was produced for the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance in 2009 on a limited budget. It is being shown at the renovated Edwin Carter Log Cabin Discovery Center in Breckenridge, CO.
Edwin Carter unwittingly became one of our nations most prominent naturalists. The documentary chronicles how a New York-born hunter and Colorado gold miner helped expose the environmental consequences of his trades. The Free Masons played an interesting role in his life and they saw to it that he was honored by lying in state at State Capitol in Denver and Breckenridge after he died...all in all very unusual.
Filmed in Colorado, New York and Washington State. Narrated by Dick Foley of the Brothers Four and scored and edited by Blue Note Productions, New York.

UP Steam Program for the Hugo CO Roundhouse
Steve Lee, retired from Union Pacific RR December 31, 2010, was the guest presenter at Hugo Roundhouse Restoration meeting in Hugo, Colorado, Sunday, March 13, 2011. His program covered the UP Steam Heritage program which he was involved oversaw during his career. Over 50 folks from around Colorado converged on the eastern prairie town along the former Kansas Pacific line (UP's Limon Subdivision).
After the digital projection program we were invited into the former UP roundhouse. Windows and doors will be replaced/installed in 2011. My thanks to the Hugo folks for their hospitality.
Constructed in 1909, the Hugo Union Pacific Railroad Roundhouse is one of only three remaining from the original pre-merger Union Pacific Railroad, with this being the only one in Colorado. It's one of only four historic roundhouses left in Colorado and the only one associated with the Union Pacific Railroad. It's also the only surviving brick roundhouse in the state and one of the most significant historical sites on Colorado's Central Plains.
Roundhouse Preservation, Inc. (RPI), a 501(c)(3) located in Lincoln County, Colorado received its non-profit status on March 20, 2002. Its focus is the preservation and restoration of the Union Pacific Railroad roundhouse in Hugo, Colorado. Even though the roundhouse is owned by Lincoln County, RPI has taken the lead in preservation of this historic structure.
To date, RPI has received three State Historical Fund grants to begin restoration of the roundhouse. Along with a grant received by Lincoln County, the roundhouse has been shored up and is no longer in imminent danger of collapse. The exterior masonry work has been completed, the engineering for replacement of the roof is in progress, and once that is completed the latest grant will be used to reconstruct the roof over two of the eight bays on the roundhouse.
At the meeting, members will transact any necessary business, including renewing memberships and electing three members to the R P I Board of Directors. The seat now held by Roxie Devers will be filled for a three-year term, and the seat held by Lian Emmerling will be filled for a one-year term. Both incumbents are candidates for reelection. A third director will be elected for a two-year term to replace Kate Piskorski, who resigned February 7. The only known candidate for the post as of this writing is Dee Ann Blevins, who previously served on the Board for seven years, before resigning in December 2009.
The members of RPI want to thank everyone who has helped us get to this point. We look forward to working with the CDOT staff involved in the project, Nan Rickey with the State Historical Fund, David Wittman with Martin/Martin Engineers, historic architect Merrill Wilson, and the Lincoln County Commissioners in successfully completing this project. (Info courtesy Roundhouse Preservation)
As the Hugo Roundhouse Preservation Inc. effort enters its 10th year, the 2011 Annual Meeting of Members was held at the former Hugo railroad depot in Hines Park Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 2 p.m. A highlight of the meeting was the the program on U. P. Steam, presented by Steve Lee and Jim Burrill.
Steve Lee is a career railroader who recently retired after 39 years service, 22 years as manager of the U. P. Steam Program. He's still involved in historic preservation of railroad stuff, including helping the Portola Railroad Museum with a steam locomotive restoration.
