灵岩山地处太湖之滨，紧邻木渎古镇，海拔182米。因盛产灵芝石而得名。 山上多奇石，巨岩嵯峨，怪石嶙峋。
灵岩山，自2500年以前的春秋时起，这里就屡屡受到皇家的眷顾。是春秋时代吴王夫差馆娃宫的旧址，也是越国献西施的地方。
800余年后，东晋大官陆玩，在灵岩山建私家别墅，晚年舍宅为寺，这是灵岩山结缘佛教的开端。
此后，南朝梁武帝听闻这里有名叫智积的菩萨显圣，而扩建灵岩山寺。南宋孝宗皇帝在灵岩山为抗金名将韩世忠修建蕲王墓及蕲王祠。
清朝康熙皇帝南巡途中，多次登临灵岩。他的孙子乾隆皇帝更在馆娃宫的遗址上，再度建起了行宫。
灵岩山寺，这座千年梵刹，自东晋司空陆玩舍宅为寺，智积菩萨开山，迄今已有1600余年历史。它是我国著名的佛教净土宗道场，在海内外闻名遐迩。
