The Liszt House Weimar is the former home of the composer and pianist Franz Liszt in Weimar , which is now a museum . It is located in Marienstraße south of the Weimar city center. The house was built in 1798/99 as a residence and office of the grand ducal court gardener. The plans for the house were designed by the court architect Johann Friedrich Rudolf Steiner . On the opposite side of the street was built in 1816/17 a similar building, which was designed by Steiner's son Carl Friedrich Christian Steiner and Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray . Both buildings, which at the time were located on the southern edge of the urban area, form a kind of gateway to the city. In 1819, the house under the direction of the architect Coudray was fundamentally redesigned, so that it is one of the most characteristic examples of the Weimar Classic today.
On the ground floor lived until 1918, the Weimar Hofgärtner . From 1854 to 1868, the upper floor served the painters Friedrich Preller d. Ä. and Hermann Wislicenus as a studio. Liszt lived before he moved into the house, from 1848 to 1861 unofficially and de facto in the so-called Altenburg in Weimar, officially, however, in the Weimar Hotel Erbprinz . In 1869 Carl Alexander provided the upper floor of the Hofgärtnerei to Franz Liszt, in which the composer spent several months (alternating with Rome and Budapest) every year until his death in 1886. The living quarters on the upper floor for Liszt were furnished by the Grand Duke, Sophie von Oranien-Nassau,
After the death of Liszt on July 31, 1886 Carl Alexander decreed that the upper floor should be used as a museum. The Bechstein grand piano , which Liszt had already provided by the manufacturer during his lifetime, is a gift from Carl Bechstein to the newly founded museum. After the abdication of Wilhelm Ernst and the associated end of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1918, the Liszt House was owned by the state of Thuringia and as such administered by the Goethe National Museum . During the Second World War , the house was badly damaged and extensively restored at the beginning of the 50s. 1954 took over theNational research and memorial sites of classical German literature in Weimar (today Klassik Stiftung Weimar ) the building, which carried out extensive repair work in the following years.
Since July 2006, the historic living spaces have been supplemented by a permanent exhibition on the ground floor on Liszt's life and work, a cooperation project of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar with the Liszt School of Music Weimar and the Bauhaus University Weimar . In 2010/2011, a historic preservation of the historic interiors of the upper floor and the renovation of the roof and facade took place.

Princess Sophie of the Netherlands (Wilhelmine Marie Sophie Louise; 8 April 1824 -- 23 March 1897) was the only daughter of King William II of the Netherlands and of his wife Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna of Russia. She was heir presumptive to her niece, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, for seven years, from the death of her brother until her own death. She married prince Carl Alexander von Saksen Weimar Eisenach in 1842 and became grand duchess of Weimar.
LISZT HOUSE - WEIMAR
The classical building is located on the western boundary of the Park on the Ilm and at the beginning of the avenue leading to Belvedere Palace. It was originally built as a gardener's lodge at the very end of the 18th century. In 1819, master builder Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray redesigned the house and adapted it architecturally to match the building opposite. The house served as a studio for Friedrich Preller the elder and Hermann Wislicenius from the 1850s until Liszt moved there in 1869. This is where Liszt's second period of residence in Weimar began. He had already lived at Villa Altenburg in Jenaer Strasse with Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein from 1848 to 1861 during his term of office as the court's musical director. Upon returning to Weimar with the invitation of Grand Duke Carl Alexander, he used the so comfortably furnished apartments by the Grand Duchess Sophie until his death in 1886. Liszt only spent the summer months there; winter and spring were spent in Rome and Budapest. The Weimar summers of this genius, who was admired throughout Europe, were distinguished in particular by his teaching work. Liszt instructed numerous young, talented pianists from Germany and abroad free of charge at his home. Just a short time after his death, Carl Alexander opened part of the premises to the public as a memorial site. The original furnishings of the living rooms and study were preserved.
Prinses Sophie, dochter van koning Willem II en Anna Pavlovna, werd in 1842 als achttienjarige bruid van erfgroothertog Carl Alexander aan het hof te Weimar verwelkomd.
Tijdens het eerste hofconcert maakte ze kennis met de muziek van Berlioz, Hummel, Bellini, Schubert. Op het hoogtepunt van het feest overdonderde de virtuoze Hongaarse pianist Franz Liszt haar met zijn Mazeppa. Hij werd benoemd tot de zang- en pianoleraar van prinses Sophie. Liszt prees in een brief haar intelligentie en mooie zangstem. Ze zouden ruim vierenveertig jaar bevriend blijven. De groothertogin steunde hem financieel en gaf hem de kans om werken van Richard Wagner in Weimar uit te voeren.
Toen hij overleed zei Sophie tegen haar hofdame: 'Sinds ik Liszt niet meer kan horen, luister ik liever helemaal niet meer naar pianospel.'
Sophie vormde na een aantal jaren de spil van het zinderende culturele klimaat; ze stak al haar energie en haar Oranjekapitaal in de opleving van het Athenm an der Ilm zoals Weimar in de tijd van Goethe en Schiller genoemd werd.
Toen Walther von Goethe, de laatste, kinderloze kleinzoon van Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in 1885 stierf bleek bij opening van het testament dat hij de complete literaire nalatenschap van zijn grootvader aan groothertogin Sophie had nagelaten. Ze sprak toen de beroemde woorden: 'Ik heb geërfd, Duitsland en de wereld zal met mij mee erven.'

Weimar is a city in central Germany. It's known as the birthplace of Weimar Classicism, a humanistic cultural movement. The Goethe & Schiller Monument in front of the German National Theater celebrates the 2 writers, who lived in the city. Goethe’s baroque residence is now the Goethe National Museum. The Schiller Museum is adjacent to the writer’s home. Bauhaus Museum Weimar has works by architect Walter Gropius.
The historical epicentre of Germany's 18th-century Enlightenment, Weimar is an essential stop for anyone with a passion for the country's history and culture. A pantheon of intellectual and creative giants lived and worked here: Goethe, Schiller, Bach, Cranach, Liszt, Nietzsche, Gropius, Herder, Feininger, Kandinsky – and the list goes on. You’ll see them memorialised on the streets, in museums and in reverently-preserved houses across town. In summer, Weimar’s many parks and gardens lend themselves to quiet contemplation of all this intellectual and cultural gravity (or allow you to take a break from it).
Weimar is also the place where, post WWI, the constitution of the German Reich, known by historians as the Weimar Republic (1919–33), was drafted, though there are strangely few reminders of this historical moment. Nearby, the unadorned, unaltered remains of the Buchenwald concentration camp provide sobering testament to the crimes of the subsequent Nazi regime.
Weimar is the town of Goethe and Schiller and is found in Thuringia (Thüringen) state, Germany. Weimar is a small town with lots of tourists, most of whom come in on coaches for day-visits. Roads can be congested in the mornings and evenings. The best and most convenient way is by train. Deutsche Bahn offers direct connections from Berlin, Leipzig and Erfurt. Weimar Hauptbahnhof is about a kilometre from Goetheplatz. Weimar is small and the best way is by foot or bike. Weimar has a public transport system but as a tourist you won't need it. Taxis are at night the best way when you feel lost and they are used to cater tourists.
Weimar is one of the most historic sites in Germany. It was home of Goethe and Schiller, the two most famous German poets and writers, a lot to see in Weimar such as :
Bauhaus-University Weimar and the Haus am Horn, part of the Bauhaus Sites protected by UNESCO.
Stadtschloss (city castle) - Home of the biggest sponsor of Goethe and Schiller. Art gallery.
Anna Amalia Bibliothek - Unique library and art selection, famous for it's rococo style. A fire in 2004 did great damage but the library reopened in 2007.
Nationaltheater - Foundation place of the first German democracy in 1918 and successor of the Weimar Hof theatre where Goethe's premieres took place. Well-known theatre today.
Park an der Ilm - Picturesque garden with Goethes summer house. Lie down on the lawn and enjoy the scenery.
Belvedere - charming park with summer castle a short distance to the south of the city
Goethe- and Schiller-Memorial in the Theaterplatz - This is a very famous memorial for two great German writers.
Buchenwald - for a more somber outing, one can visit the famous Jewish concentration camp, just over the hill from Weimar in Ettersberg. It's a 20 minute bus ride from the train station. The Stalinist monument erected outside the camp once the Soviets took over is visible from the city.
