Places to see in ( San Francisco - USA ) Little Italy
Places to see in ( San Francisco - USA ) Little Italy
San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood is called Little Italy, and it's no wonder. Although waves of residents have lived their lives and left their mark on the neighborhood, the most permanent and visible stamp has been Italian. For decades, Italian restaurants, delis, and bakeries were abundant, and the smells of Italian cooking perfumed the air. You can still find that Italian heritage in North Beach, but things are changing.
Today's shoppers on Grant Avenue find the old shops replaced by locally-owned boutiques. But at the same time, the Soracco family makes focaccia bread the same way they have for more than a hundred years at Liguria Bakery. Caffe Trieste holds its own against those fancy-pants, newer coffee shops after more than five decades in business.
On Columbus Avenue, you'll find the legendary City Lights bookstore, an Italian pottery shop, a scrumptious-smelling Italian deli. And something not Italian but utterly delicious: handmade, French style chocolate truffles. North Beach is mellow during the day, but Columbus Avenue lights up after dark, and the atmosphere becomes festive. The watering holes on Grant Avenue get especially busy, too.

LITTLE ITALY SAN DIEGO CA INDIA ST 9.2009 BEST WESTERN
Little Italy is a somewhat hilly neighborhood in Downtown San Diego, California that was originally a predominately Italian fishing neighborhood. It has since been gentrified and now Little Italy is a scenic neighborhood composed mostly of Italian restaurants, Italian retail shops, home design stores, art galleries, and residential units.
Little Italy is one of the more active downtown neighborhoods and has frequent festivals and events including their very own Farmers Market. Also known as the Mercato. The neighborhood has low crime rates when compared with other neighborhoods in Downtown San Diego[1] and is maintained by the Little Italy Neighborhood Association.
Historically, Little Italy has been a home to Italian fishermen. Many Italians moved to San Diego from San Francisco after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake in search of tuna and other deep-sea sport and commercial fish.[3]
When Interstate 5 was constructed through Little Italy in the early 1970s, 35% of the neighborhood was destroyed and during the same time the California tuna industry was declining, which caused the neighborhood to suffer nearly 30 years of decline.[4]
With the creation of the Little Italy Association in 1996, the neighborhood has been going through gentrification and has seen a renaissance as a restaurant district specializing in Italian food and memorabilia. Prior to gentrification, the neighborhood was mainly composed of low-density commercial businesses and single-family detached homes. Currently, the neighborhood is mainly composed of residential units, mostly mid-rises, high-rises, and lofts, with ground floor retail stores and a few commercial buildings.
