Pt 1: August 2016 Drive from Wexford, PA to Little Pine State Park- for Wild Mtn. Marathon
Here are portions of my Drive from Wexford, PA (Allegheny County) to Little Pine State Park (Lycoming County) to participate in the 2016 Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon. The Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon is closer to 50K than to 26.2 miles, and takes place on the same trails as the Eastern States 100 Mile Trail Race. In 2016, the Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon took place at the same time as the Eastern States 100 mile race, but started at 7AM, whereas the Eastern States 100 mile race started at 5AM. This video runs right up to about 6AM on race day, with an interesting time lapse of daybreak at Little Pine State Park Campground (just beofe the race). Stay tuned of parts 2 and 3 (covering the Mountain Marathon), and the activities I did after the Mountain Marathon (Kayaking in the lake at Little Pine State Park), and a branch of Pine Creek, as well as a bicycle ride from Waterville, PA to Jersey Shore and back. Basically, I made my own weekend triathalon (although not quite as challenging as the Canyon Man Triathalon)- see my other videos on that event, which takes place in Tioga County each year in May.
2016 Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon (A Pennsylvania Grand Canyon Trail Event)
This is the 2016 Pennsylvania Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon, which used to occur concurrently with the Eastern States 100 Mile Trail Race in Little Pine State Park (Waterville, PA) each August. I participated in the 2014 Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon (which I found out about while participating in a older- now defunct trail event called the Mega Transect). The race takes place on many of the same trails used by Eastern States 100 mile runners, which includes portions of the Rail to Trail (Bicycle Trail) along wild and scenic Pine Creek. The area is known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon (a much greener and smaller grand canyon than the Grand Canyon) but still large enough for lots of adventures. I believe that the Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon no longer occurs at the same time as the Eastern States 100 miler, maybe to allow people (who really really love trail racing) to participate in both events. I am kind of sad, though (as someone who will probably never be able to finish an event as grueling as the Eastern States) that the dates are different. It was neat watching the Eastern States Finishers come in the next day- after running 100 miles.
The 3rd and final video in this series contains some kayaking I did while in the Lake at Little Pine State Park, as well as a bicycle ride on the PA Grand Canyon Bike Trail from Waterville to the trail's Southern terminus in Jersey Shore, PA. The video was shot in 4K (with a Go Pro 4 camera). Some clicking noises may be heard from the plastic covers used to waterproof older versions of GoPro, as well as low frame rate (15 FPS) in 4K.
I am told that the Call of the Wilds Mountain Marathon is closer to 50K than 26.2 miles (and it feels more like 40 miles- with all of the elevation change. It took me between 12 and 13 hours to finish.

This is a tough and brutal, but beautiful 100 mile course in the Pennsylvania Wilds. The finisher rate was about 44%.

This is a drive that lasted a little over 2 hours sped up to 8- 16X normal speed including a stop at a truck stop in Lamar, PA. I began driving South on PA route 44 to 220 West, and then I-80 West (about 100 miles). In Brookville, PA (Route 28) I got off of I-80. At that time it was too dark to get any video.

The Great Gildersleeve: Apartment Hunting / Leroy Buys a Goat / Marjorie's Wedding Gown
Premiering on August 31, 1941, The Great Gildersleeve moved the title character from the McGees' Wistful Vista to Summerfield, where Gildersleeve now oversaw his late brother-in-law's estate and took on the rearing of his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie (originally played by Lurene Tuttle and followed by Louise Erickson and Mary Lee Robb) and Leroy Forester (Walter Tetley). The household also included a cook named Birdie. Curiously, while Gildersleeve had occasionally spoken of his (never-present) wife in some Fibber episodes, in his own series the character was a confirmed bachelor.
In a striking forerunner to such later television hits as Bachelor Father and Family Affair, both of which are centered on well-to-do uncles taking in their deceased siblings' children, Gildersleeve was a bachelor raising two children while, at first, administering a girdle manufacturing company (If you want a better corset, of course, it's a Gildersleeve) and then for the bulk of the show's run, serving as Summerfield's water commissioner, between time with the ladies and nights with the boys. The Great Gildersleeve may have been the first broadcast show to be centered on a single parent balancing child-rearing, work, and a social life, done with taste and genuine wit, often at the expense of Gildersleeve's now slightly understated pomposity.
Many of the original episodes were co-written by John Whedon, father of Tom Whedon (who wrote The Golden Girls), and grandfather of Deadwood scripter Zack Whedon and Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog).
The key to the show was Peary, whose booming voice and facility with moans, groans, laughs, shudders and inflection was as close to body language and facial suggestion as a voice could get. Peary was so effective, and Gildersleeve became so familiar a character, that he was referenced and satirized periodically in other comedies and in a few cartoons.

West Virginia ( (listen)) is a state located in the Appalachian region in the Southern United States and is also considered to be a part of the Middle Atlantic States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is the 41st largest state by area, and is ranked 38th in population. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, after the American Civil War had begun. Delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key border state during the war. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states admitted to the Union during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada). While a portion of its residents held slaves, most of the residents were yeomen farmers, and the delegates provided for gradual abolition of slavery in the new state Constitution.
The Census Bureau and the Association of American Geographers classify West Virginia as part of the Southern United States. However the Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies West Virginia as a part of the Mid-Atlantic. The northern panhandle extends adjacent to Pennsylvania and Ohio, with the West Virginia cities of Wheeling and Weirton just across the border from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, while Bluefield is less than 70 miles (110 km) from North Carolina. Huntington in the southwest is close to the states of Ohio and Kentucky, while Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle region are considered part of the Washington metropolitan area, in between the states of Maryland and Virginia. The unique position of West Virginia means that it is often included in several geographical regions, including the Mid-Atlantic, the Upland South, and the Southeastern United States. It is the only state that is entirely within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission; the area is commonly defined as Appalachia.The state is noted for its mountains and rolling hills, its historically significant logging and coal mining industries, and its political and labor history. It is also known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hunting.
