Hiking The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center Trail Part 1
Hiking the Black Oak Trail at The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center in Willow Springs, IL on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Unfortunately, the hiking host calls the trail the White Oak Trail a few times but it's is the Black Oak Trail and it's 1 2/3 miles in length. The White Oak Trail is across from the parking lot and it too is a lovely trail to hike. It's about a mile in length. With hiking host Frank Farrell and hiking buddy Rick Young.

HIKING The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center Trail in Early Spring Part 3
Hiking The Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center Trail in Early Spring Part 3 with hiking host Frank Farrell and hiking buddy Rick Young. Located in Willow Springs, Illinois. Frank and Rick hike the 1 and 2/3 mile Black Oak Trail in this second of three part mini-series. Frank mistakenly calls the Black Oak Trail the White Oak Trail several times in the video. As it turns out, across from the nature center's parking lot is the actual White Oak Trial, one mile long and although there's no body of water in sight while hiking it, the Long John Slough cannot be seen when you hike this one, in the summer you get a good feel for being in the midle of the woods while hiking through it.
Hopes are HikingWithFrank will grow into a channel of hiking videos with this video being the third of many and each attempting to become more skilled in their execution for the enjoyment of its You Tube viewers.

At 15,000 acres, the Palos Preserves in southwest Cook County are the largest concentration of preserved land in the Forest Preserves. Thanks to more than three decades of habitat restoration, they also hold some of the highest-quality natural areas in the county.
These trails join many popular sites, such as the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center, Pulaski Woods, Saganashkee Slough and Maple Lake which is home to a mountain bike staging area that provides access to almost 40 miles of unpaved trails.
OAK LAWN ILLINOIS TORNADO - APRIL 21, 1967 PT 1 OF 2
PART 1 OF 2
The footage shown here and the narration actually came from separate sources and have been combined together to tell the story of that terrible Friday afternoon, April 21, 1967.
This tornado was one of several that were spawned that afternoon across Illinois on 4.21.67. Earlier that same afternoon, around 3:45, a deadly tornado struck Belvidere, IL. just as children were boarding school buses. 24 people were killed. That tornado as well as Oak Lawn's tornado were rated an 'F4'. The Oak lawn tornado claimed 33 lives, and traveled a path of 16 miles in 16 minutes.
Local residents must have been very grateful for the arrival of Spring to the Chicago area in 1967 after overcoming a paralyzing snow blizzard that dumped nearly 26 inches of snow upon the Chicago area in January of that year.
April 21st 1967 was a warm, but cloudy day. While there were weather warnings issued, residents were accustomed to such warnings and didn't pay much attention. It was a Friday afternoon, school kids had come home from school, moms were preparing dinner, grocery shopping, etc. Other residents were heading home from work, cashing their paychecks, or getting ready for confirmation that night. As afternoon turned into evening, the skies became threatening. Many recall the sky turning a vivid pea soup green color just before it hit.
Around 5:15pm, an off duty weather bureau employee noticed a huge mass of rotating clouds over his home in Romeoville, Illinois. The rotating mass rapidly moved east and developed into a greenish-gray funnel cloud. An employee at The Little Red Schoolhouse on Willow Springs Rd. observed the funnel, which appeared to be going lower, and was preceded by hail. He attempted to call in a report to the national weather service, but was unable to get a dial tone. The funnel cloud touched down as an official tornado just east of 88th Ave in Palos Hills, between 105th & 106th St, (a block north of Moraine Valley College). It was here, according to witnesses, the tornado turned from green to black in color.
The tornado crossed over the Tri-State tollway and Harlem Ave. heading east into Chicago Ridge. At this point, a photographer in the shopping plaza at 87th/Harlem captured the famous black and white photo of the ominous tornado as it began going down 95th St. A line of cars full of Friday evening movie patrons were waiting to get into the Starlite Drive-In theater near 95th & Ridgeland to see Hot Rods To Hell. Theater goers saw the ominous black funnel approaching, and jumped out of their cars and took cover inside the Community Discount store which was next to the theater. The tornado damaged the theater's screen and huge speakers. From here it roared into the main section of Oak Lawn.
It was at the height of Friday rush hour, just before 5:30pm. Motorists were stopped for the red light at the intersection of 95th & Southwest Highway. As the tornado rapidly approached, cars were picked up and sent flying in all directions as were buses which were tossed like toys. Oak Lawn High School's brand new swimming pool was demolished. Shoppers inside the Fairway supermarket were told to move to the back of the store just as the tornado approached, demolishing the supermarket. Several other businesses were damaged or destroyed near this intersection.
The tornado continued traveling northeast where it came up to the shopping plaza at 87th and Cicero. At this point, a Ray Bacon captured 3 photographs of it (shown in this video). After crossing Cicero Ave. it hit the Airway Trailer park, the Dairy Basket grocery store, and the popular Oak Lawn Roller Rink, which at the time, was filled with children who'd been roller skating that afternoon. Later that evening, some of those children could be found at hospitals and morgues, -still with their skates on.
The tornado blew through Hometown, Evergreen Park and finally Chicago, where it's ferocity had weakened, but still managed to cause sporadic damage as it raised and dipped down again before finally reaching Lake Michigan at 79th Street. By this point, it's wind speed was down to roughly 100 mph. From here, it is unknown whether it became a waterspout or if it simply dissipated. Amazingly, just one day after the disaster, the Oak Lawn area received a rare late April snow.
About a week later, a man in Benton Harbor, Michigan found a Clark 'Super 100' entry blank that had been filled out by an Oak Lawn resident and deposited at a Clark gas station in Oak Lawn just a day or so before the tornado.
