Beach Drive, Lake Michigan, Harbor Springs, MI. 2016
Beach Drive, Lake Michigan Summer Houses, Harbor Springs, MI., Driving East to West from Pennsylvania Ave. toZoll Street. Nestled along the deepest harbor in the Great Lakes, lies the charming waterfront community of Harbor Springs. Discover the iconic and scenic Tunnel of Trees, stroll through beautiful downtown shops and explore lighthouses along crystal clear waters. Enjoy four seasons of events and activities for all ages in the Little Traverse Bay area of Northern Michigan.
Harbor Springs is a city and resort community in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,194 at the 2010 census.
Harbor Springs is in a sheltered bay on the north shore of the Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. The Little Traverse Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse on the Harbor Point peninsula, which shelters the deepest natural harbor on the Great Lakes. M-119 connects with US 31 7 miles (11 km) east and south at Bay View, and Petoskey, which is 4 miles (6.4 km) away on the south side of the harbor.
The area is known for its historic summer resorts, such as Wequetonsing, which was founded by Illinois businessmen and lawyers Henry Stryker, III, and Henry Brigham McClure. They were both connected with the Jacob Bunn industrial dynasty of Illinois.
The European-American settlement started with a mission by French Catholic Jesuits; they called this area L'Arbre Croche, meaning Crooked Tree. In 1847, L'Arbre Croche had the largest concentration of Native Americans in Michigan.[6] French traders renamed the area Petit Traverse, or Little Traverse, when they arrived in the area. After more settlers came to the area from the eastern United States, they changed the name of the village to Harbor Springs, incorporating it in 1880.
The federally recognized Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians are descendants of the numerous Odawa bands that historically occupied this area. They have their tribal offices in Harbor Springs, and a gaming resort in Petoskey. Their reservation lands encompasses approximately 336 square miles (870 km2) of land in Charlevoix and Emmet counties.
One of the city's more prominent European-American residents was Ephraim Shay (1839–1916), known for his invention of the Shay locomotive. The hexagonal-shaped house he built in downtown Harbor Springs still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The local elementary school is named after him.
Another building of interest is the Douglas House on the shore of Lake Michigan. Designed by noted architect Richard Meier and completed in 1973, this house is one of 150 structures listed in 2007 as America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.
Harbor Springs was the location of the Club Ponytail, a famous music hall destroyed by fire in 1969
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.30 square miles (3.37 km2), all of it land. Harbor Springs has a lot to offer during the summer months, including beaches, sailing schools, marinas, multiple golf courses, bike paths, hiking trails, ice cream shops, candy stores, coffee shops and various summer vacation communities. In the winter months the two ski resorts Nub's Nob and Boyne Highlands offer over 678 acres of skiable terrain as well as terrain parks and various trails for snow shoeing & cross-country skiing. When Little Traverse Bay freezes over in the winter months, many people venture out on the ice for ice fishing and ice boating.
Harbor Springs is a few miles from neighboring Petoskey, Michigan, on the other side of the bay. It offers a wider variety of activities, including a multiplex movie theater, a thriving downtown area of its own, and several big-box stores.

Driving Into Bay Harbor, MI
Bay Harbor is an upscale residential and resort community that is part of the City of Petoskey in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a partially gated, master-planned community.
Bay Harbor is in a sheltered bay on the south shore of the Little Traverse Bay on Lake Michigan. It is on U.S. HIghway 31 (US 31), with Petoskey, immediately adjacent to the east along the harbor. It is home to the upscale Inn at Bay Harbor, a Boyne Resort property.
In the late 19th century, a lime stone quarry was opened on property that is now Bay Harbor. Around 1917, Petoskey Portland Cement incorporated with the purpose of manufacturing cement. For over 80 years, Petoskey Portland and its later holding-company owner, Penn Dixie, provided jobs for hundreds of workers. Mining operations and a massive cement plant operated over 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) and five miles (8 km) of Lake Michigan shoreline on Little Traverse Bay. Ceasing operations in the 1980s, the cement plant was abandoned, leaving a brownfield landscape of chromium brick, asbestos, coal and 2.5-million cubic yards of kiln dust.
In 1993, several parties joined together to undertake what would become the largest reclamation in North America. In 1994, simultaneous explosions demolished the cement plant smokestacks. Eight months later, the barrier between Bay Harbor and Little Traverse Bay was removed, and water rushed in at the rate of 1,000,000 US gal/min (63 m3/s). Within 24 hours, over 2.5 billion US gallons (9,500,000 m3) of water formed Bay Harbor Lake.
Bay Harbor's town center, the Village at Bay Harbor, has boutiques and restaurants where the former cement plant once stood. The Village is the center of the community, featuring such public elements as a marina, public observation platform and walking trails. Nearly one mile of Michigan shoreline and 70 acres (280,000 m2) of prime land were donated as public parks by Bay Harbor Company and are connected by five miles of non-motorized public nature trails.
Bay Harbor has over 1,200 acres (4.9 km2), 25 neighborhoods and five miles (8 km) of Lake Michigan waterfront. Three nine-hole golf courses line the shoreline and woodlands and have been rated eighth in the nation by Golf Digest. 90 acres (360,000 m2) of sheltered harborage offers protection for 120 public boat docks and another 128 private dockominiums. Bay Harbor is a four-season luxury resort community and has a world-class deep water harbor, the Olympic caliber Bay Harbor Equestrian Club, and the 27-hole Bay Harbor Golf Club, designed by Arthur Hills and hailed by Golf Digest as The Pebble Beach of the Midwest.

Ceasing operations in the 1980s, the cement plant was abandoned, leaving a brownfield landscape of chromium brick, asbestos, coal and 2.5 million cubic yards of kiln dust.
About Bay Harbor
Bay Harbor's town center, the Village at Bay Harbor, has boutiques and restaurants where the former cement plant once stood. The Village is the center of the community, featuring such public elements as a marina, public observation platform and walking trails. Nearly one mile of Michigan shoreline and 70 acres (280,000 m2) of prime land were donated as public parks by Bay Harbor Company and are connected by five miles of non-motorized public nature trails.
Bay Harbor has over 1,200 acres (4.9 km2), 25 neighborhoods and 5 miles (8 km) of Lake Michigan waterfront.
Lodging in The Village
Bay Harbor has two hotels: one is The Bay Harbor Village Hotel, a botique property which overlooks the Marina and the Village. The other is the Inn at Bay Harbor. After undergoing a 2 million dollar renovation in June 2016, the Inn became a Marriott Autograph property, one of only 100 hotels in the world to be part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection Hotels.
Events at Bay Harbor
Bay Harbor holds a number of Village and Community Foundation events throughout the year. In June the Annual In-Water Boat Show takes place, as well as the Bay Harbor Community Foundation's Vintage Car and Boat Show. In July there are events on the 3rd and 4th, including a parade featuring GEM cars. Bay Harbor set a world record for the longest parade of GEM cars in the world in 2009 and held the record for 6 years. Bay Harbor is a fully integrated GEM car Community.
