CSRA Real Estate: Come See Where the 150-Year-Old Magnolias Grow
Today we’re at the historic Redcliffe Plantation to take you on a waltz through the history of one of South Carolina’s most beautiful attractions. Named after the red cliffs standing in front of the home, Redcliffe was built between 1857 and 1859 by James Henry Hammond, a former South Carolina governor who popularized the phrase “cotton is king.” The two-story Greek Revival mansion features a raised basement, an attic, and originally offered a cupola at the very top. Besides the Hammonds, the property also became home to numerous other notable families. To find out more on the history of Redcliffe Plantation, watch this short video.

Today we’re touring the historic Redcliffe Plantation for an antebellum walk through history.
In 1855 James Henry Hammond, a former governor of South Carolina and state senator who popularized the phrase “cotton is king,” purchased property in Beech Island, South Carolina. He then decided to name the property Redcliffe for the red bluffs that stood in front of the home. The Greek Revival mansion was built between 1857 and 1859. It’s a two-story mansion with a raised basement, an attic, and originally featured a cupola (observatory) at the top of the house.
The home also features heart pine flooring, sycamore doors and fireplace mantles, and 14-foot high ceilings on the main level. Prior to the Civil War, Redcliffe was a 400-acre country estate with just the one mansion and four separate slave cabins. The property became home to four generations of the Hammond family from 1859 to 1975, as well as numerous African-American families, like the Henleys, the Wigfalls, and Dewalts.
The property was donated in 1973 to the state of South Carolina, and is currently one of 47 parks in the state park system. The grounds are open for free seven ways a week, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with tours given Thursday through Monday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. for a small fee.
The grounds at Redcliffe were designed in the 1860s by landscape architect Louis Berckmans of Fruitland Nurseries, which later became the Augusta National Golf Course. The property’s iconic magnolia allee features 150-year-old magnolias which came from Fruitland Nurseries.

Hard Labor Creek State Park Cabins
This video is a tour of the renovated Hard Labor Creek State Park Cabins. Hard Labor Creek State Park is part of the Georgia State Park system. The park is located about an hour east of Downtown Atlanta on I-20 toward Augusta and just outside Rutledge, Ga.
There are several overnight options at Hard Labor Creek State Park, tent camping, campers, or cabins. The park has 20 cabins, eight of which were completely renovated in June 2015. The renovated cabins have two bedrooms and two baths, sleep up to six, and have spacious kitchens and living quarters with new furniture. Older cabins are two-bedroom, one bath and sleep up to eight. My favorite feature of the cabins is the large front porch. I toured a renovated cabin and it had two rocking chairs, as well as a large picnic table perfect for a game of cards or a puzzle. Outside is a fire pit for the requisite s’mores.
A Tour of Elijah Clark State Park
This park is located on the western shore of 71,100-acre Clarks Hill Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Southeast. With its boat ramps and accessible fishing pier, it is especially popular with anglers and boaters. A sandy swimming beach welcomes visitors to cool off during Georgia summers. Rental cottages are located on the lake's edge, and the spacious campground is nestled into the forest. Tent campers will enjoy extra privacy in the walk-in section.
Elijah Clark State Park is named for a frontiersman and Georgia war hero who led pioneers during the Revolutionary War. A log cabin replica of the Clark home displays furniture, utensils and tools circa 1780 and is open weekends April through November. Visitors can also view the graves of Clark and his wife Hannah.
Revolutionary War hero, frontiersman and Indian fighter, General Elijah Clark was one of the first settlers in the part of Georgia that now lies along Clarks Hill Lake north of Augusta. Tour a replica of Clark's homestead, an authentically recreated cabin designed for life on the American frontier and visit the state park.
