The 13th Annual Pork & Brew and New Mexico BBQ State Championship will return to the Santa Ana Star Center July 2nd – 4th. Bringing together the best BBQ vendors from around the region, this three-day festival featuring BBQ, local beer, live music and interactive family activities will be one of the biggest events of the summer. Returning to the event will be Galloping Grace Youth Ranch, showcasing a petting zoo and pig races throughout the weekend.
“It’s amazing how this event has grown over the years,” said Rio Rancho Mayor, Gregg Hull. “Food events have become very popular in recent years, but Rio Rancho has been putting on one of the best food festivals in New Mexico for years. In many ways, Pork & Brew is New Mexico’s Original Food Festival and we are very proud to play host.”
This year’s 13th Annual Pork & Brew, presented by the Santa Ana Star Casino and hosted by the Rio Rancho Convention and Visitors Bureau, will feature an indoor/outdoor format, ensuring the 15,000 expected attendees can enjoy all the festival has to offer rain or shine. This year’s event will again feature some of New Mexico’s breweries with the likes of Tractor Brewing Company, Red Door Brewing Company, and local Rio Rancho favorite, Cazuelas Brewery. Over twenty different microbrews will be on tap throughout the event. For the beer enthusiasts, there will be an expanded seating area with live, local music throughout each day. This is quite possibly the best way to spend your 4th of July weekend this summer in New Mexico. Between chomps of fantastic BBQ, you can check out local arts and crafts, burn off some calories by dancing to live music and even take the kids for a face painting and a few trips through the bouncy houses. There will also be kid’s watermelon and adult pie eating contests twice daily.
Times for the 13th Annual Pork & Brew are as follows: Saturday, July 2nd and Sunday, July 3rd 11am - 7pm. Monday, July 4th 11am - 5pm.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 888.694.4849, online at SantaAnaStarCenter.com, in person at the Don Chalmers Ford Box Office at Santa Ana Star Center, or Santa Ana Star Casino Players Club. Tickets are $6 for adults while kid’s tickets (4-12) and seniors (65+) can be purchased for $4, children 3 and under get in FREE! For updates on the event visit:
Pork & Brew has become one of the largest annual events in New Mexico and winners of the BBQ Championship will advance to participate in the American Royal in Kansas City, MO, The Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, TN, and the World Food Championships in Kissimmee, FL.

Moving to Kansas City | RJ's Bob-be-que
Hello and welcome to the Dwell Kansas City Daily Briefing on what it is to live in and enjoy Kansas City. I'm “Local Jay” Swearingen.
Since this daily briefing is all about Kansas City, we all realize that I could do a full year of content and never stop talking about barbeque joints from Smithville to Belton. For lovers of pork butts and burnt ends, we live in the greatest city on earth.
So, each time I talk about the virtues of a particular barbeque spot, I get plenty of emails reminding me of another fine meat purveyor that I may have missed. Many times, those emails tout the flavorful goodness of RJ’s Bob-be-que Shack in Mission.
My family has been frequenting RJ’s for years. Its reasonable priced for lunch and dinner. Its accessible at the corner of Johnson Drive and Lamar. Parking is steep but available. And the building is clean and comfortable. But none of those are the reason to visit RJ’s. Hell, we’ve seen plenty of BBQ restaurants with all that going for them go belly up within months of opening.
No, you go to RJ’s Bob-be-que Shack because Bob Palmgreen knows his way around the barbeque pit. You go to RJ’s for the fall-off-the-freakin’-bone, sopping, delicious, Denver-cut lamb ribs. You go to RJ’s for their award-winning jalapeno sausage and their chessy corn bake.
You see Bob spent is professional life in the restaurant business hither and yawn during the regular hours and his weekends sleeping in a lawn chair under a 10X10 tent at barbeque completions checking the pit temperature every few hours.
This guy is the real deal with thousands of hours minding the pit and honing his recipe for the most flavorful bbq in the United States.
And his expertise hasn’t gone unnoticed. Not only is RJs one of the most talked about shacks in Kansas City – it has gained national notoriety from just about every reputable eatery magazine and has been featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
Go to RJs and ask for Sam, she’s knowledgeable and attentive. Order whatever meat suits your particular taste – you won’t be disappointed in anything Bob offers. But be sure to try their cheesy corn bake and leave room for either their bread pudding or chocolate brownies – both are made in-house.
RJ’s Bob-be-que shack in Mission: World famous: Just one visit and you’ll know why. Eat inside or outside and don’t forget the bread pudding.

Phoenix, Arizona, USA
For me, one of the ultimate American food meals to eat is awesome BBQ - when the meat is smoked perfectly so it slides off the bone, and the flavor is packed full of insane smokiness. My brother in law Derek had already been to Little Miss BBQ, but it was my first time to eat here, and I was so excited.
I arrived a little over an hour early to get in line, but luckily as soon as you pull up you get a number so that you don’t actually have to wait in line the entire time.
Scott and the entire crew at Little Miss BBQ are amazing, and you can immediately feel their passion and their genuine love for what they do and for the people they get to interact with everyday as a result of serving the best BBQ in Phoenix! Scott and his wife have an interesting and amazing grassroots history and start to their BBQ business. They first started making BBQ at home just because they loved doing it. Eventually they started competing in American BBQ competitions. At the beginning things didn’t go so well, but they kept going and perfecting their BBQ recipes and eventually started to win some of the competitions. Eventually they opened Little Miss BBQ, and it’s one of the best BBQ spots you’ll ever eat at.
So after getting the full tour of the restaurant and all the smoked meat, it was about time to open. You line up outside and the actual inside is quite small - most people either takeaway or eat outside.
I wanted to try a little of everything, so we got a giant tray of smoked BBQ meat including pork ribs, pulled pork, turkey, sausage, brisket, and beef ribs, with sides. Total price for the entire tray came to $92.70 - that was a lot of meat!
Thanks to my brother in law Derek for coming out to eat as well. We started with the beef ribs, and those are the best of the best. The meat falls apart and it was so insanely juicy and flavorful. The BBQ brisket will also blow you mind with its massive meaty flavor and juiciness. Finally my other top meat was the sausage, including jalapeno and a mix of meat and bacon.
Lastly, you have to eat your American food bbq feast with their famous pecan pie. And even though I’m not into sweets, a few bites at the end was amazing.
Little Miss BBQ is a phenomenal BBQ restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona. Not only will the quality and taste of the meat blow you away, but the passion of Scott and the entire crew are so genuine and so friendly, and that’s what makes it so good.

Vintage train to stop at 'Strasburg Video #4
Deer Trail, Colorado History as I remembered it in the 1950's
By: Ron Schaffer
Steam Locomotive No. 844, the last steam engine built for the Union Pacific Railroad, will roll into Strasburg Friday, Aug. 17
. SUBMITTED PHOTOS & VIDEOS By: Ron Schaffer August 17, 2012, 4:36 PM
Local residents can mark the 1-70 Corridor's rich railroad history when a historic steam locomotive with several vintage support cars rolls into the area.
Delivered in 1944, Steam Locomotive No. 844 is the last steam engine made for the Union Pacific Railroad. Known as the Living Legend, No. 844, which was built as a high-speed passenger engine, is scheduled to arrive in Strasburg NO. 844 at 2:01 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at the south end of Main Street. But it was late for some reason as it pulled in at
2:40 p. m. as I was walking down the tracks headed to the South end of Main Street and seen it coming. That is when I started to roll the Kodak with the first video.
There was a big crowed that show up for the Steam Locomotive No. 844 in Strasburg and from all walks of live and meet to people that were out of state to see Old Steam Locomotive No. 844, and that was a great site to see that. I really enjoy going to Strasburg from Deer Trail, Colorado and mostly likely some resident there seen it going through Deer Trail, Colorado., and took picture of it?
The 844's distinction is that it's never been retired from Union Pacific's locomotive roster, said Mark Davis, a UP spokesman. With it being the last steam locomotive delivered to UP in 1944, that's quite an accomplishment.
The train will depart at 2:30 p.m. after a brief maintenance stop, during which the crew will lubricate the moving parts.
They have enough fuel and water to carry them through the day, Davis added.
No. 844, which was nearly scrapped in 1960, is on the fourth leg of the UP 150 Express, a multi-segment tour celebrating Union Pacific's 150th anniversary. This portion of the trip started in Cheyenne, Wyo., Aug. 5 and will end there Aug. 18 after traveling east across Nebraska to DCS Moines, Iowa, where it was put on display for four days as part of the Iowa State Fair. It then traveled south to Kansas City, Mo., before turning back west across Kansas into Colorado.
On the day of its stop at Strasburg, the UP 150 Express will travel from Sharon Springs, Kan., to Denver.
The original Union Pacific was created when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act of July 1, 1862, to promote the construction of a transcontinental railroad in the United States. The UP 150 Express is traveling 13,000 miles through 15 states as part of the 150th anniversary celebration.
Our 150th anniversary is a milestone that provides us with the opportunity to thank our communities for supporting Union Pacific, said Robert W. Turner, a Union Pacific official. We are happy to celebrate our past and look forward
to continuing to meet America's freight transportation needs.
The UP 150 Express will bring several historic rail cars with it: the railroad's last boiler car; water tenders; and baggage, maintenance, and concession cars.
Strasburg's railroad history is particularly deep. Though lesser known than Promontory Summit, Utah, where the historic Last Spike of the first transcontinental railroad was driven, the Strasburg joining of the rails of the Kansas Pacific in August actually marked the true completion of a coast-to-coast railway network because, until 1872, passengers on the first transcontinental line were required to disembark between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb., to cross the Missouri River by boat.
The original Union Pacific, which built the first transcontinental railroad with the Central Pacific Railroad of California, merged with the Kansas Pacific and Denver Pacific railroads in 1880. The new company was renamed the Union Pacific Railway Co. by UP investor Jay Gould.
Today the Union Pacific Railroad is the principal operating company of Union Pacific Corporation, linking 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country by rail.
In Colorado the railroad has 1,535 miles of track and 1,329 employees with an annual payroll of $112 million. Its presence dates to 1867, when track was laid across the northeastern tip of the state as part of the first transcontinental railroad.
The fifth segment of the UP 150 Express will head to the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

Chef Jon Ashton Visits Smoki O's BBQ in St. Louis
Special Sauce: This St. Louis Barbecue Joint is on a Mission to Change Lives
Every year I visit numerous cities and towns across the United States to either host live cooking shows or shoot video segments. On each trip, I build in extra time to visit schools or volunteer at local charities. My philosophy is simple. If you are given blessings, share. If you don't have money to give, dedicate your time or natural talents. Winston Churchill said, We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.
Making a life dedicated to giving is personified by an astonishing couple I was fortunate to meet last year in St. Louis. Smoki O's is a humble barbecue joint in St Louis run by Earline and Otis Walker.
Have you ever met someone whose presence greeted you before you even had the chance to shake his or her hand? When the production crew and I entered Smoki O's, as part of a video assignment, there was instant chemistry. It's that feeling when you have pins and needles without truly knowing why. It's an empathic reaction to pure kindness, gentleness, and spirituality.
With a simple hug at reception and some quick chatting, I knew this video segment was no longer about barbecue. My visit to Smoki O's was a gift, which inspired a blog on how we all can change our communities by investing kindness. Giving is the truest gift to heal others while also healing ourselves. Do good. Feel good.
HIGHER PURPOSE, HIGHER EDUCATION
The Walker's blessed me by sharing the story of their mission, which goes way beyond just serving incredible barbecue. Earline and Otis have created a remarkable environment providing young people from their local community valuable job experience and life lessons. The barbecue they serve up daily is not only fuel for the body, it's food for the soul, and the launching pad for a brighter tomorrow.
Purpose creates life, Earline said to me. Because of our commitment to the community, we wanted to do something more than barbecue. We wanted to provide opportunities for young people to learn and develop job skills. We have graduated 16 youth through Smoki O's that have gone on to college. We provided supplemental funds in order to provide them with books.
The Walker's take the time to nurture employees, most of whom have never had a job before. Then they generously dig into their own pockets to help support those same kids when they go to college. Earline says it's not about the money. Something much more important than revenue has kept Smoki O's in business for nearly 20 years.
I'm a very spiritual person, she said. Otis will tell you that I have devotion every morning before I start my day. God believed in service and love. Service and love is what God is about, so that's what we are about.
I was fighting back tears as Earline genuinely spoke about how important it is for her and Earl to teach their young employees about manners, respect, and providing excellent service. As unsung heroes, the Walker's enlightened vision leaves footprints on many hearts. The kids being assisting have a real opportunity to live to their best potential and become future advocates of kindness. Who doesn't benefit when given the gifts of love and support?
As I had mentioned, the Walker's were only meant to be highlighted in a food segment so apart from personally inspiring me, I can testify the food at Smoki O's is delectable. In all my years of traveling and cooking, I had never tasted pig snout (pronounced snoot in St. Louis). I have eaten the cheeks, brains and other less popular parts of our porcine pals.
Never the honker.
What does snoot taste like? It tastes like crackling with a little more maturity. The thinly sliced, seasoned and grilled slices of crispy goodness are nothing like I expected, and I recommend you give them a try. If you're a wee bit unsure, let me leave you with this final thought about snoot: It has more flavor than bacon. I swear to you!
All the food at Smoki O's was delicious, but I must give a special shout-out to the homemade potato salad. Don't miss it!
If you have the opportunity to visit the Walker's at Smoki O's in St. Louis. Tell them Chef Jon sent you. You will leave feeling with a rejuvenated spirit and a happy belly.
