Places to see in ( London - UK ) Canary Wharf
Canary Wharf is a major business district in east London, England, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Canary Wharf is one of the United Kingdom's two main financial centres – along with the traditional City of London – and contains many of Europe's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest in the UK, One Canada Square.
Canary Wharf contains around 16,000,000 square feet (1,500,000 m2) of office and retail space, of which around 7,900,000 square feet (730,000 m2) is owned by Canary Wharf Group. Around 105,000 people work in Canary Wharf, and Canary Wharf is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms, and media organisations, including Barclays, Citigroup, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, EY, Fitch Ratings, HSBC, Infosys, J.P. Morgan, KPMG, MetLife, Moody's, Morgan Stanley, RBC, S&P Global, Skadden, State Street, and Thomson Reuters.
Canary Wharf is located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs. From 1802 to 1939, the area was one of the busiest docks in the world. After the 1960s, the port industry began to decline, leading to all the docks being closed by 1980. Of the three main docks of the West India Docks, the Canary Wharf estate occupies part of the north side and the entire south side of the Import Dock (North Dock), both sides of the Export Dock (Middle Dock) and the north side of the South Dock.
The Canary Wharf developers played a pro-active role in improving transport links, which they recognised as essential to the success of the project. Beginning in 1985, they proposed extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Bank, and upgrading of frequencies and capacity. The DLR now serves three stations in the area: West India Quay, Canary Wharf, Heron Quays. In 1988, they proposed construction of a second rail line to Docklands, which ultimately became the Jubilee Line Extension. After the Jubilee Extension opened in 1999, Canary Wharf began to actively promote Crossrail, as a new station on Crossrail's Elizabeth line will serve the area. It's due to be open in December 2018.
London City Airport is linked to both Canary Wharf and the City of London via the Docklands Light Railway, and an interchange to the London Underground. London City Airport DLR station is situated immediately adjacent to the terminal building, with enclosed access to and from the elevated platforms.
Heron Quays Station, one of the first stations to be built in the Canary Wharf estate, was first opened in 1987. The station has two platforms in use, is in Travelcard Zone 2, and is on the Lewisham branch of the Docklands Light Railway, between Canary Wharf and South Quay.

London Video Tour: Canary Wharf and the Docklands
In this video tour, David Hill of New York Habitat (nyhabitat.com) explores the glittering neighborhoods of Canary Wharf and Docklands. Canary Wharf was first recognized as an ideal docking location by the Vikings, who established it as a port. It later became an important keystone in the West Indies trade, bringing in sugar, tea, and rum back in the heyday of Britain’s naval power. Since the 1980’s it has been transformed into a financial powerhouse, and together with the City of London (not to be confused with London as a city) is informally known as the Wall Street of London. Towering banks and media skyscrapers fill the sky, while upscale boutique shops line the streets of this posh neighborhood. Located on the Isle of Dogs, this district extends from Limehouse in the west to London City Airport in the east. This video will discuss places in Canary Wharf and Docklands, including Cabot Square, the West India Quay, the Thames Barrier, Island Gardens, and the Greenwich foot tunnel.
You can also read our blog article about Canary Wharf and the Docklands, London:
Canary Wharf and Cabot Square
As the center of Canary Wharf, Cabot Square is the illustrious home of multiple global banks and media houses. It was named after the Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto and often features works of art around the square. Due to its illustrious patronage this area is also known for its top notch shopping, so it’s a great place to pick up designer or high street goods.
The West India Quay
The West India Quay looks just like a shipyard – but all of the interiors of the buildings have been recently reimagined in modern styles. As such, it combines the best of both worlds – the charm of Georgian character with the wonders of modern plumbing. It’s absolutely a must-see.

A history of The Docklands
The Docklands is an area in the east of London that used to be the centre of shipping trade for London and the rest of the UK. It started to decline in the late 1960s and 1970s before shutting down fully in 1981. At the same time, the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) formed to redevelop the Docklands, which lead to the development of Canary Wharf financial area, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and Jubilee line, both of which connects the Docklands to Central London and London City Airport, which accommodates small haul flights across the UK and to other cities across Europe. In Autumn 2019, the Docklands will be served by Crossrail/Elizabeth Line, which will connect the Docklands to Reading and Heathrow Airport in the west and Shenfield and Abbey Wood (Via Canary Wharf) in the east.
The only remaining dockyard from the days of the dockyards is the Tilbury docks in Essex.
London City Airport http://www.londoncityairport.com UK
London City Airport (IATA: LCY, ICAO: EGLC) is an international airport in London. It is located on a former Docklands site in the London Borough of Newham, some 6 NM (11 km; 6.9 mi) east of the City of London and a rather smaller distance east of Canary Wharf. These are the twin centres of London's financial industry, which is a major user of the airport. The airport was developed by the engineering company Mowlem in 1986–87 and is now owned by a consortium comprising Highstar Capital and Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP).
London City Airport has a single 1,500-metre (4,900 ft) long runway, and a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P728) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flight training (but only for training necessary for the operation of aircraft at the airport).
Only multi-engine, fixed-wing aircraft with special aircraft and aircrew certification to fly 5.5° approaches are allowed to conduct operations at London City Airport.
In 2013, London City served over 3.3 million passengers, a 12% increase compared with 2012 and a record total for the airport. It was the fifth busiest airport in passengers and aircraft movements serving the London area after Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton and the 15th busiest in the UK.

The City of London, UK 2015
London is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium.[5] London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties, the City of London and the county of Greater London, though historically it was split between the City, Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.
