Kolkata Indian Street Food: The Jhal Muri Wallah of London: Everybody Love, Love Jhal Muri Express
✓ It is no exaggeration when we say that we absolutely love this man - in our eyes he is the Jhal Muri King of London, in fact we have never ever seen anyone else in the UK selling in this Desi style of mobile setup (just like you see back in the Desh), we would go as far as to say that he is a Jhal Muri Making Master!!!
We genuinely think that this man is more Indian than a Desi Indian!!! The speed at which he chops his onions and green chillies is hypnotically mesmerizing, the way he puts the whole thing together, the way he creates a paper cone / cup to hold the delicious snack that just been created, the actual style and design of the stall.
If you remember we caught up with this most legendary Angrezi (English अन्ग्रेजी) Jhal Muri Wallah at last years Alchemy Festival ( ) - so we are very much honoured to again meet the man himself; Mr Angus Denoon; a man inspired by the beautiful city of Kolkata and the pavement kitchens that provide sustenance for its many inhabitants with the cheapest and tastiest of freshly made food anywhere. Not to mention the street characters creating food that is blessed by hand and human touch and further energised and charged by positive thoughts.
A video of him serving up his Jhal Muri at the Cricket World Cup 2019 (outside the Oval Ground) was tweeted on twitter by Amitah Bachan. Thinking that he may be at the eagerly awaited India vs Pakistan match at the Manchester Old Trafford Stadium on Sunday 16th June 2019.
You can go many times to India and love it every moment of your time spent there, (but you're always sad in the knowledge that India only exists in India and nowhere else) the sights you see, the sounds you hear, the people you meet (in India); all serve to feed you not just physically but also emotionally and spiritually. So when we come across a man such as this we humbly raise our hat and take a bow because he has not only given us just a snack but also given us a taste of back home.
He serves up the popular spicy Bengali snack (Jhalmuri) at a street cart called Everybody Love Love Jhal Muri Express at various locations. (Jhal Muri is very similar to the Gujarati Bhel Puri). Jhal Muri is Kolkata's Favorite Snack
Wala (Wallah) = Someone specializing or working in a specific occupation or activity i.e. Chai Wallah, Rickshaw Wallah, Kulfi Wallah etc.........
He is a street food troubadour so if you want to know where he will be next, look out for messages of his schedule on his social media pages (or you could message him).

Here's a link to his YouTube Channel:
Website: streetfoodkolkata.com
He is a filmmaker & you can watch a moving video of his on YouTube titled simply Kolkata Street Food: - in which he articulates beautifully his Indian street food experience, the words he speaks touch a nerve deep within our very soul.
A special thank you to Angus who very much welcomed us and graciously allowed us a privileged glimpse into his mobile street food kitchen to do the videoing.
God Bless You Sir !!!

Bourne & Shepherd Heritage Building Kolkata
Bourne & Shepherd was an Indian photographic studio and one of the oldest established photographic businesses in the world. Established in 1863, at its peak, it was the most successful commercial firm in 19th-and early 20th-century India, with agencies all over India, and outlets in London and Paris, and also ran a mail order service. A devastating fire in 1991 destroyed much of the studio's photographic archive and resulted in a severe financial loss to the firm. The long-term impact of the fire, legal difficulties with the Indian government, which owned the studio building, and the increasing dominance of digital technology, finally forced the studio's closure in June 2016. At its closure, the studio had operated continuously for 176 years.
Though some sources consider its inception to be 1862, when noted British photographers, Charles Shepherd established a photographic studio, with Arthur Robertson, called 'Shepherd & Robertson' in Agra, which later moved to Shimla and eventually became the part of ‘Howard, Bourne & Shepherd’, set up by Samuel
Bourne, Charles Shepherd, along with William Howard, first established in Shimla around 1863, Howard's studio in Kolkata dates back to 1840, where it is still operational today, at Esplanade Row, in Esplanade, Kolkata (Calcutta) under the same name. Today some of their earlier work is preserved at Cambridge University Library, the National Portrait Gallery, London, the National Geographic Society's Image Collection and the Smithsonian Institution.
Samuel Bourne came to India in 1863, and set up a partnership with an established Calcutta photographer, William Howard, and they set up a new studio 'Howard & Bourne' at Shimla. William Howard had set up the Calcutta studio in 1840. Meanwhile, Charles Shepherd, had already established a photographic studio, with Arthur Robertson, called 'Shepherd & Robertson' in Agra in 1862, and subsequently he too moved to Shimla in 1864. At some point Robertson left the business and Charles Shepherd, joined Bourne company to form 'Howard, Bourne & Shepherd'. In 1863, he made first of three major Himalayan photographic expeditions, followed by another one 1866, prior to which he took an expedition to Kashmir in 1864, in fact all photographic histories of that era carry his works. He was known to travel heavy, as he moved with a large retinue of 42 coolies carried his cameras, darkroom tent and chests of chemicals and glass plates, he was to become one of India's greatest photographers of that era. Charles on the other hand became known as a master printer, he stayed back in Shimla and managed the commercial distribution and printing aspects of the business. Through the 1860s, Bourne's work was exhibited in public exhibition in Europe and was also part of the Paris Universal Exposition in 1867. He also wrote several despatches for 'The British Journal of Photography between' 1863–1870, and the company became an avid provider of the Indian landscape views to the common visitors to the country and also to Britishers back home, and not just survived but the thrived in an era of fierce competition between commercial photographers.
in the 1930s, later after a major business slump following the independence, and exodus of European community and the end of princely states, he held an auction in 1955, in which it was bought over by its present owners, and today the building itself is a heritage property.

Rabindra Setu as seen from Babu Ghat - Kolkata
One can see the ferries, wooden boats and temporary floating docks in Hoogly River and seen far behind is the Rabindra Setu.
The Howrah Bridge is a cantilever bridge with a suspended span over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943, the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking the two cities of Howrah and Kolkata (Calcutta). On 14 June 1965 it was renamed Rabindra Setu, after the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and Asian Nobel laureate. It is still popularly known as the Howrah Bridge.
The bridge is one of four on the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal. The other bridges are the Vidyasagar Setu (popularly called the Second Hooghly Bridge), the Vivekananda Setu, and the newly built Nivedita Setu. It weathers the storms of the Bay of Bengal region, carrying a daily traffic of approximately 100,000 vehicles and possibly more than 150,000 pedestrians, easily making it the busiest cantilever bridge in the world. The third-longest cantilever bridge at the time of its construction, the Howrah Bridge is the sixth-longest bridge of its type in the world.
Babughat is name of the one of the many Ghats built during British Raj, along the river bank of Hooghly on its bank on Strand Road at Kolkata side.
The ghat has a tall colonial structure, which is the landing berth of the ghat. It is a fine Doric-Greek style pavilion with huge pillars. The ghat originally known was Baboo Raj Chandra Ghat is now only known by first words Baboo-ghat or Babu-ghat. Babu / Baboo in Bengali means Sahib or gentleman. The ghat is named after Babu Raj Chandra Das, husband of legendary Rani Rashmoni and zamindar of Janbazar, who built it in 1830, in memory of her late husband. A marble tablet beneath the pediment implies that some of the credit for the erection of the ghat must go to Lord William Bentinck as he encouraged such spending with a view to improve public amenities. It is second oldest ghat of Kolkata.
The pavilion today is completely encroached by vendors and pandas. The old colonial structure and stairs leading to river are in various stages of decay and derelict. A section of ghat originally meant for bathing of ladies has turned in to a garbage point. However, ever so, the ghat is bustling with crowds since morning till late evening with people who use it for bathing, puja, religious ceremonies, massage and leisure. During Chhat Puja huge crowd can be seen on Babughat performing their puja. The ghat is also used during Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja rather in all festivals for immersion of idols. People performing Chhat Puja on Babughat, Kolkata.
Further, Babughat is always bustling with passengers, who use it cross the river to reach Howrah Station just across the river and also other areas of Howrah, ferries for which are available at frequent intervals, which take off from the jetty connected to ghat. The water ferry is run and maintained by Inland Waterways Corporation. Ferry services are available from Babughat to Howrah, Chandpal, Telkal Ghat, and Bally.

Kolkata, known historically in English as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly river, it is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational centre of East India, while the Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port as well as its sole major riverine port. As of 2011, the city had 4.5 million residents; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 14.1 million, making it the third-most populous metropolitan area in India. As of 2008, its economic output as measured by gross domestic product ranked third among South Asian cities, behind Mumbai and Delhi. As a growing metropolitan city in a developing country, Kolkata confronts substantial urban pollution, traffic congestion, poverty, overpopulation, and other logistic and socioeconomic problems.
In the late 17th century, the three villages that predated Kolkata were ruled by the Nawab of Bengal under Mughal suzerainty. After the Nawab granted the East India Company a trading license in 1690, the area was developed by the Company into an increasingly fortified mercantile base. Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah occupied Kolkata in 1756 after company started evading taxes and due to increasing militarization of the fort, the East India Company retook it in the following year and in 1793 assumed full sovereignty after Mughal governorship (Nizamat) was abolished. Under East India Company and later under the British Raj, Kolkata served as the capital of India until 1911, when its perceived geographical disadvantages, combined with growing nationalism in Bengal, led to a shift of the capital to New Delhi. The city was the centre of the Indian independence movement; it remains a hotbed of contemporary state politics. Following Indian independence in 1947, Kolkata—which was once the centre of modern Indian education, science, culture, and politics—witnessed several decades of relative economic stagnation. Since the early 2000s, an economic rejuvenation has led to accelerated growth.
Renaissance and a religiously and ethnically diverse centre of culture in Bengal and India, Kolkata has established local traditions in drama, art, film, theatre, and literature that have gained wide audiences. Many people from Kolkata—among them several Nobel laureates—have contributed to the arts, the sciences, and other areas, while Kolkata culture features idiosyncrasies that include distinctively close-knit neighbourhoods (paras) and freestyle intellectual exchanges (adda). West Bengal's share of the Bengali film industry is based in the city, which also hosts venerable cultural institutions of national importance, such as the Academy of Fine Arts, the Victoria Memorial, the Asiatic Society, the Indian Museum, and the National Library of India. Though home to major cricketing venues and franchises, Kolkata differs from other Indian cities by giving importance to association football and other sports.

Kolkata (Calcutta) Trams - Esplanade Depot and a Ride on a New Tram Car
CTC (Calcutta Tramways Corporation) operates the tram network of Kolkata. Kolkata is the only city in India still having a tram network. The first electric tram to run in Calcutta was in 1902, the first in Asia. Horse and steam engine hauled trams were in service by the 1880's. By 1943 the track length of the tram line network had been expanded to over 67 kms but since then has gradually decreased. The rolling stock is of vintage type (old SLC and SLC and some new trams with a polycarbonate ceiling and larger windows, better lighting and piped radio/music). The olders tram cars are around 70 years old. The tram ride in this video is in one of the newer tram cars. CTC also runs a few city bus routes.
P C Sorcar makes the Victoria Memorial vanish from Kolkata!
PC Sorkar pretends to make the Victoria memorial in Kolkata vanish altogether. He may not be doing such a great job of it here, but for a moment let's pretend that he smartly shows this trick to an impromptu audience, with great flourish and conviction. Is magic about conviction, perhaps?
Magician P. C. Sorcar (Junior) is the living legend of Indian Magic. He is BANGAL-KA-JADU personified and is what Magic of India means today.
He comes from the famous SORCAR family of HINDU-MAGICIANS, and this family of MAGICIANS or WONDER-WORKERS, are popular in this field atleast for EIGHT GENERATIONS. Each generation contributed its share of mysticism through centuries and thus have become a house-hold name and are romantically associated with Indian Folk-tales, Fables Literature and Facts. To an average Indian, SORCAR and MAGIC are synonymous.
It is P.C.SORCAR(Senior), father of P.C.SORCAR(Junior), who popularised their family art of MAGIC beyond the boundaries of India elevating the presentations to a more prestigious pedestal of theatrical form of International standard, keeping the Indian traditions as the central motif. He gave a new lease of life to the dying art and thus is recognised as THE FATHER OF INDIAN MAGIC.
P.C.SORCAR(Junior) elevated the status of magic further more from the position where his father left it, to this futuristic mystery-spectacular-entertainment show for the intellectuals, successfully competing with the other forms of theatrical shows. He has added modern techniques, surrealistic sequences, third dimensional choreography, mixture of rustic, tradition and modern music, classical dance along with the intellectual-illusions created by psychological directions, superb technical and mechanical instruments along with his super showmanship and personality.
