The Long Barracks - Part Of The Alamo In San Antonio Texas
Most people think of the Alamo in San Antonio Texas only as the famous facade they've seen in a series of Hollywood films. In fact, there's more than one building, and the Battle of the Alamo took place over a much bigger piece of ground than many visitors realize before they see the site.
The Long Barracks is a separate building - featuring its own museum - that many Alamo tourists don't take time to visit. It was a convent in the days when the Alamo was actually known as Mission San Antonio in the 1700s, although the original building looked very different than the one that exists today. At one time, there was even a second story arcade.
During the March 6, 1836 battle, Mexican soldiers fought their way into the interior of the compound, and much of the final action took place around the Long Barracks and the mission church that is now so famous.
The Long Barracks Museum offers a short (15 minute) film that tells more about it's history, but even if you don't watch the film, make sure you see two items on display there: Colonel Travis's signet ring, and Jim Bowie's knife.
The Long Barracks compound stands near the majestic Cenotaph, a memorial to the defenders of the Alamo. I've included some shots of it in this video.

I had no idea we actually lost the Battle of the Alamo. Texas has a crazy history and I can see now why Texans have so much pride.

In this video I explore the Alamo grounds, including all the interesting demonstrations and explanations offered by the guides and Living History Encampment. I also go in the Alamo and the Long Barrack Exhibition. Everything at the Alamo is free.
At 2:20, I also check out the Battle for Texas Experience. This is a private museum that costs $20 plus $6 for the audio guide. I thought it was worthwhile and the end battle scene (at 3:55) was really cool.
Definitely check out the Alamo and learn about the battle for yourself. It's fascinating.

San Antonio Day 1: Remember The Alamo!! (12/1/10)
You can't vacation in San Antonio without visiting The Alamo, right? Well, my wife, Claire, and I did just that on our first day in San Antonio. Nevermind the fact that our hotel, the Emily Morgan Hotel, was located right across the street from the famed Texas landmark!! We enjoyed ourselves while learning some of the history of the place we had always heard about. Unfortunately, people are not allowed to video inside the buildings, or else we would have had many more great things to show. After leaving The Alamo, we walked to the Tower of the Americas to eat a wonderful lunch in the clouds at the Chart House Restaurant. It was a perfect afternoon leading up to an evening at The Riverwalk.

In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate spent the day at the San Antonio Alamo. The Alamo fortress was the center of the infamous Battle of the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. We enjoyed a walk along the Riverwalk in San Antonio, highlighted by a visit to the Alamo historic site. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas maintain the Texas Alamo and it is the most popular tourist attraction in Texas. We enjoyed learning about the Alamo, visiting the mission and long barracks and seeing artifacts in the Alamo museum. It was great to walk where famous Americans like Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and William Travis made their last stand for liberty and to learn about the Battle of the Alamo. Sam Houston used the rally cry, Remember the Alamo! to inspire troops to defeat the Mexicans. Admission to the Alamo is free, which is perfect for a cheap family, but we recommend the audio tour to get the most out of your visit. So if you make it to San Antonio, Texas... Remember the Alamo!
