I recently spent four days off the grid, living in a rustic cabin at the tip of Long Point, Ontario, to do filming and vlogging work for the Long Point Bird Observatory, the oldest bird observatory in the western hemisphere. Lake Erie: what do the birds tell us? talk by Dr. Doug Tozer from Bird Studies Canada
We hear most about the influence of recent changes in Lake Erie on humans, especially harmful algal blooms and safe drinking water, but it is also important to keep in mind the many complex ecological processes negatively impacting Great Lakes waterbirds and other wildlife. This presentation by Bird Studies Canada’s Ontario Program Scientist will overview what the current conditions in Lake Erie mean for the numerous bird species that depend on the lake for nesting and migration, including information collected on the issue by hundreds of Citizen Scientists.
BIO: Doug has always been interested in birds. His early interest in bird biology grew into a life-long passion with a B.Sc. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Guelph; a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Avian Conservation Biology from Trent University in Peterborough; and numerous contracts and jobs working on birds in places ranging from northern Ontario to Oklahoma to Georgia. He is currently Ontario Program Scientist at Bird Studies Canada’s National Headquarters in Port Rowan, Ontario, where he coordinates the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program and the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey, and provides scientific oversight for all of BSC’s other Ontario-based bird monitoring and research programs.

Long Point is a sand spit located on the north shore of Lake Erie, located in Norfolk County in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is approximately 40-km long and is about a kilometre wide at its thickest point. On the South side of Long Point is Lake Erie, on the North side is Long Point Bay. Some of the towns that border the bay include Port Rowan, Turkey Point and Port Dover. Long Point is directly north and across the lake from Erie, Pennsylvania.
It has an all year population of somewhere between 400 and 500 people, but in the summer it can have a population of as many as 5,000 because of all the cottagers and campers. Long Point is a popular boating, swimming, fishing, duck-hunting and canoeing area, and sees over a hundred thousand visitors each year. A large portion of Long Point is owned by The Long Point Company, a private organization which does not allow the general public onto its private land. Therefore, the vast majority of the properties on Long Point are within the first few kilometres.
