Cycling to the Wetlands Park | Chengdu Daily Vlog 4.11.2017 | Cycling in China
Qinglong Lake Wetlands Park (青龙湖湿地公园) is a pretty freaking big park just outside of Chengdu city, Sichuan, China. It was actually mislabeled by Google as Shiling Forest Park (十陵森林公园) 。 It was less than an hour to cycle there from my apartment, so my Chinese wife and I headed off!
China pro tip: get out of the cities. It's so much fun when you can get out - even just a peek - into the suburbs or the countryside. Skyscrapers dwindle, and lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks, and greenery take their place! Plus, some great food can be had! Whole roasted chickens, ducks, wild mushrooms - all kinds of stuff!
I miss doing these China daily life types of vlogs - they're fun! I need to bring them back. There's always something interesting going on in China. Never a dull moment!
Feel free to subscribe to see what China is like from an American expat's perspective! I try to put up videos weekly!

Zhangjiajie National Park - Hiking to Longquan Waterfall and Wulong Village
I hiked four days in Zhangjiajie National Park in Hunan, China, and here is part of my adventure from the third day in which I trekked up a beautiful valley to a large waterfall, and then looped over to the main trail to Wulong Village (the name given to a group of sandstone buttes which looks like a village with a little imagination). I was originally trying to make it to the top road behind the upper cable car station, which the map showed as possible, but I couldn't find any way to continue up the valley past Longquan Waterfall, so I turned around and took a side path which eventually met up with the cable car trail.
This national park is a bit like the Grand Canyon in the USA in terms of stunning views on an epic scale. You look out at any point of the mountains and it's almost like your eyes can't comprehend the beauty you are seeing. Also like the Grand Canyon, it is overcrowded with tourists in many of the key view points, and so I tried to balance jostling around with the masses of people and hiking on lesser-known trails. These trails were often not easy to find as the trailheads were not marked and I couldn't get a very accurate map, but once I was there it was well worth the effort of getting off the beaten path.
Most trails in China are constructed with stone. When you are hiking up or down any size of hill, you will be walking on stone steps, which is really impressive when you think of how much work it would have been to build these trails. The jungle is often too thick on either side of the trail to create your own switchbacks, so you have to take the stairs. n the trail under the Yangjiajie Cable Car, this means you will be walking down (or up) stairs for roughly 1700 vertical feet. I logged an average of 12 miles and 2,500 vertical feet each day I was in the park. By the third day, my legs and knees were feeling the strain of the stairs. That's why I was so excited to find this jungle trail which was just dirt and switchbacks. I can go a lot further on dirt than stone.
They filmed Jake's first flight in the movie Avatar in this park, and that particular spot in the park is extremely crowded, so I skipped it. The Yanjiajie Scenic Area is equally beautiful and more quiet. I'm really thankful that I was able to find and hike on this jungle trail taking in the views from all angles. These sandstone pillars are truly an amazing natural wonder worth seeing.
This is the first video blog I've done, so please give me feedback! Sometimes it's really hard for me to record my experiences because I'm too busy enjoying the moment. While editing this, there were things I wish I had filmed which I did not because I just didn't think of it while hiking, but I will do it a little differently next time. Let me know what you would like to see in the future :-)

How Chaotic Are Festivals in China? // This Is China
We attended the Longquan Peach Blossom Festival (龍泉桃花節) on the outskirts of Chengdu. It happens once a year, around mid-March, when the peach trees that cover the hillside flower. Sounds pretty nice, right?
There's something you should know about China -- it has about 1.3 billion people living in it. When a festival hits, the crowds are intense. This was our first Chinese festival, and it might be our last. There were just so many people that it was hard to enjoy it.
That being said, I think the festival is a great idea. If you can visit the Longquan Peach Flower Festival during the week the crowds will be smaller, and you'll surely have a much better time. Check out this link to get more info about visiting:
As for us, the day is sort of a blur... I remember a lot of bodies pressing up against me. There was a ton of noise. I think I may have seen a tree with some flowers on it... I can't be sure.
I live in China, so if you're interested in visiting the country, or even living there, visit my website. It also has tons of information about other destinations across the world.

A bus stop-over on the way from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou. This was just about an hour from Chengdu. The toilet here, compared to general Chinese standard, was quite acceptable.
