Road Trip #267 - Louisiana Ave/Toledano St/Washington Ave/Palmetto St - New Orleans, Louisiana
Road Trip #267 - Louisiana Ave/Toledano St/Washington Ave/Palmetto St - New Orleans, Louisiana
A trip across uptown New Orleans, beginning on Louisiana Avenue at Tchoupitoulas Street near the border of the East Riverside and Irish Channel neighborhoods. After crossing Magazine Street, we enter the Touro neighborhood. At St. Charles Avenue, the Milan neighborhood begins. At LaSalle Street, we enter Central City, and shortly after, the road veers over a block to the right, and becomes Toledano Street. Between Claiborne and South Broad, Toledano Street forms the border between the Hoffman Triangle to the right and Broadmoor to the left. Here, Toledano merges with Washington Avenue. At Martin Luther King Blvd, we enter Gert Town, and the Washington Avenue canal is visible to the right. After passing Xavier University, the lakebound lanes of Washington Avenue cross the canal and the road name changes to Drexel Drive for a block. Crossing Carrollton Avenue, we enter the Dixon Neighborhood, the name of the street changes to Palmetto Street, and the canal running down the center becomes the Palmetto Canal. At Cherry Street, we enter the edge of the Lakewood Neighborhood with the New Orleans Country club and Longue Vue House and Gardens to our north. We finish up at the 17th Street Canal, entering Jefferson Parish.

Garden District New Orleans
The Garden District is one of the best preserved collection of historic southern mansions in the United States. The area was originally developed between 1832 and 1900 by wealthy New Orleans citizens. A few notable residents include Sandra Bullock, Nicolas Cage and horror novelist Anne Rice. Rice's residence, located at 1239 First Street served as the inspiration for the home of the Mayfair witches as described in the novel The Wiching Hour.
