Atomic City Town Center - Los Alamos
This pedestrian-oriented, streetscape living environment bridges the canyon with downtown Los Alamos. The urban model focuses on achieving a proper density of population, efficient use of scarce land resources, and establishment of a live-work streetscape. Shopping areas and street-level storefronts emphasize walk-ability. Restaurants, entertainment, and public spaces are integrated throughout the town center. A new conservation park & trail district that invites the community to the Canyon edge and enjoyment of the spectacular mesa-top views accents the urban landscape and provides welcome opportunities for living, working, shopping, dining, and outdoor enjoyment.
World's Largest Gold Crystal Studied at Los Alamos
When geologist John Rakovan needed better tools to investigate whether a dazzling 217.78-gram piece of gold was in fact the world's largest single-crystal specimen — a distinguishing factor that would not only drastically increase its market value but also provide a unique research opportunity — he traveled to Los Alamos National Laboratory's Lujan Neutron Scattering Center to peer deep inside the mineral using neutron diffractometry. Neutrons, different from other probes such as X-rays and electrons, are able to penetrate many centimeters deep into most materials. The structure or atomic arrangement of gold crystals of this size has never been studied before, and we have a unique opportunity to do so, the Miami University professor said. Revealing the inner structure of a crystal without destroying the sample — imperative, as this one is worth an estimated $1.5 million — would allow Rakovan and Lujan Center collaborators Sven Vogel and Heinz Nakotte to prove that this exquisite nugget, which seemed almost too perfect and too big to be real, was a single crystal and hence a creation of nature. Its owner, who lives in the United States, provided the samples to Rakovan to assess the crystallinity of four specimens, all of which had been found decades ago in Venezuela.

Tehachapi Mountain Winter Hike: California, USA
Tehachapi Mountain is located about 2 hours northeast of LA but it is a completely different world. While we were staying in the area we drove up to the mountain base to hike during the winter. There was a bit of snow on the ground, being the elevation is more than 4,000 feet at the base but it was more than comfortable to enjoy. The views left our mouths open and we were surprised at the serenity of the atmosphere. Unfortunately it was not possible to hike to the top for safety reasons but we will definitely be going back again.

Conference: The Treasure of Human Experiences - Meridel Rubenstein
Speaker: Meridel Rubenstein
Visiting Associate Professor, School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University
Abstract:Eden in Iraq: A Confluence of Nature and Culture, Design and Ecology. Helping to Rebuilding Communities in the S. Iraq Marshes
Eden in Iraq is an environmental design and water remediation project in the marshes of S. Iraq using design and wastewater to create a restorative public site for cultural heritage and environmental education. Assistant Professor Peer Sathikh and I, through a Tier 1 research grant from NTU, have gathered an outstanding international interdisciplinary team. Drawing on Islamic and Mesopotamian traditions originating in this historically and symbolically charged region, this site will be a syncretic container for cultural and ecological restoration after the time of war. Our engagement with the different communities in Iraq at local, regional, and state levels as well as on our team’s interdisciplinary process will be addressed. In 2010, we learned of the work of the environmental ngo Nature Iraq to restore the vast Mesopotamian marshes. Home for over 7000 years to the Marsh Arabs, they led a sustainable unchanged life until Saddam Hussein secretly drained and burned the marshes to flush out Shia rebels hiding there (c. 1993). This area is thought to be the probable site of the historic Garden of Eden, with the Euphrates and Tigris rivers joining on the eastern edge of the marshes. When Saddam was deposed, the Marsh Arabs returned to restore their land. Their unchanged and sustainable way of life is a model of resilience.
Meridel Rubenstein was educated at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and did special graduate studies at M.I.T. with the renowned photographer, Minor White. She received an M.A./M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1974/1977.
She has maintained a studio in Santa Fe since 1975. She has created photography programs at the College of Santa Fe (1976- 80), the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico (1990- 96) and directed the MFA Photography Program at San Francisco State University in California (1985-90). From 2000-2005 she was Harnish Visiting Artist at Smith College, in Northampton, Massachusetts. Since 2007, she has been, Visiting Associate Professor in the School of Art, Design, and Media at NTU.
Meridel Rubenstein has exhibited widely including the Louvre in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and The List Center for the Visual Arts at MIT. Her works are in prominent collections including the National Museum of American Art in Washington. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and The Bunting Institute at Harvard University, grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, as well the Pollock Krasner and Rockefeller Foundations.
Her 20 year monograph, BELONGING: Los Alamos to Vietnam, Photoworks and Installations 1980-2000, was published by St. Ann’s Press in Los Angeles in 2004, with texts by environmental writer Terry Tempest Williams, and cultural and art critics: Elaine Scarry, Lucy Lippard, and Rebecca Solnit.
hy.poth.e.sis - a Dr. Steven E. Jones Documentary (Full Movie)

'hy.poth.e.sis' is a documentary film that follows physics professor Dr. Steven E. Jones during a pivotal point in his life. In 2005, Steven went public with a controversial theory regarding the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11.
His assertion that the collapse was likely the result of pre-positioned explosives rather than the hijacked planes resulted in a backlash from the community and even threatened his standing as a professor at BYU. Despite hate mail, threats, and even bribery to end his research, Steven refused to give in to overwhelming pressure and continued his pursuit of the truth.
Dr. Jones earned his bachelor's degree in physics, magna cum laude, from Brigham Young University in 1973, and his Ph.D. in physics from Vanderbilt University in 1978. From 1974 to 1977, Jones conducted his PhD research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), and post-doctoral research at Cornell University and the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility.
On September 22, 2005 Jones presented his views on the collapse of the World Trade Center towers and World Trade Center 7 at a BYU seminar attended by approximately 60 people. Jones claimed that a variety of evidence defies the mainstream collapse theory and favors controlled demolition, using thermite. The evidence Jones cited included the speed and symmetry of the collapses, and characteristics of dust jets.
Jones subsequently presented the WTC research in lectures at Idaho State University, Utah Valley State College, University of Colorado at Boulder and University of Denver, the Utah Academy of Science, Sonoma State University, University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Texas at Austin.
On September 7, 2006, Jones removed his paper from BYU's website at the request of administrators and was placed on paid leave. The university cited its concern about the increasingly speculative and accusatory nature of Jones' work and that perhaps Jones' research had not been published in appropriate scientific venues as reasons for putting him under review. The review was to have been conducted at three levels: BYU administration, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and the Physics Department. However, BYU discontinued the review. Some of Jones' colleagues also defended Jones' 9/11 work to varying degrees, and Project Censored lists his 9/11 research among the top mainstream media censored stories of 2007..more:

Bandelier National Monument New Mexico Walking Tour
Bandelier National Monument is a 33,677-acre (13,629 ha) United States National Monument near Los Alamos in Sandoval and Los Alamos Counties, New Mexico. The monument preserves the homes and territory of the Ancestral Puebloans of a later era in the Southwest. Most of the pueblo structures date to two eras, dating between 1150 and 1600 AD.
The Monument is 50 square miles (130 km2) of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field in the Jemez Mountains. Over 70% of the Monument is wilderness, with over one mile elevation change, from about 5,000 feet (1,500 m) along the Rio Grande to over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) at the peak of Cerro Grande on the rim of the Valles Caldera, providing for a wide range of life zones and wildlife habitats. There are three miles of road, and more than 70 miles of hiking trails. The Monument protects Ancestral Pueblo archeological sites, a diverse and scenic landscape, and the country's largest National Park Service Civilian Conservation Corps National Landmark District.
Bandelier was designated by President Woodrow Wilson as a National Monument on February 11, 1916, and named for Adolph Bandelier, a Swiss-American anthropologist who researched the cultures of the area and supported preservation of the sites. The park infrastructure was developed in the 1930s by crews of the Civilian Conservation Corps and is a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved architecture. The National Park Service cooperates with surrounding Pueblos, other federal agencies, and state agencies to manage the park.

What I Saw in North Korea and Why it Matters
Google Tech Talk (more info below)
March 28, 2011
Presented by Siegfried S. Hecker, Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University
ABSTRACT
North Korea Nuclear Proliferation, Negotiation and the human aspects of an estranged country.
My seventh trip to North Korea in seven years produced another surprise -- North Korea decided to build its own light-water reactor and uranium enrichment facility. During my first visit I was shown plutonium produced in its Yongbyon nuclear complex to convince me they have the bomb. For more than 30 years, Pyongyang has moved along parallel paths of nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, opting to chose bombs over electricity. I will discuss how North Korea got the bomb, why it got it, and the prospects of whether or not it will give up the bomb. Finally, I will try to show with photos and stories of how North Korea is not such a hermit kingdom after all.
Siegfried S. Hecker is co-director of the Stanford University Center for International Security and Cooperation, Senior Fellow of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and Professor (Research) in the Department of Management Science and Engineering. He is also director emeritus at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he served as director from 1986-1997 and senior fellow until July 2005. He received his B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in metallurgy from Case Western Reserve University. His current professional interests include plutonium research, cooperative nuclear threat reduction with the Russian nuclear complex, and global nonproliferation and counter terrorism. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a fellow of numerous professional societies and recently received the Presidential Enrico Fermi Award.
