Lost Mine Trail - Big Bend National Park
During Spring Break my daughter and I took a weekend trip to Big Bend National Park and we hiked the Lost Mine Trail. It is a moderate 4.2 mile out and back trail that deemed as the best trail to do if you only have time for one trail. It offers great views of the Chisos mountains with only a relatively short distance and elevation gain. It is a great trail for the effort and is one of the most popular ones in the park.

Big Bend: Mountain Lion encounter on Lost Mine Trail
We have traveled to Big Bend almost every year for the past 3 or 4 years and it is NEVER a dull moment! It is always an adventure! Big Bend has some of the most gorgeous landscape that Texas has to offer and the wildlife is simply amazing! If you ever get the chance, visit BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK!!
This video was taken last year during August and we thought we would post it since it is VERY rare for anyone to encounter a Mountain Lion. We truly feel blessed!

The entire hike up Lost Mine we kept saying we wanted to see a Black Bear. That is ALL we asked Big Bend for... Well Big Bend had better plans...
Sorry for the video quality, but we were in shock since: 1. It was a FREAKING Mountain Lion and 2. We were LITERALLY just standing in the spot he was sitting only a minute earlier, which means he had to be in the nearby bushes watching us take pictures and eat our peanut butter crackers.
We were at the very end of the trail on top of a mountain, so we had NO WHERE to go if he decided to come and investigate us.
He watched us for several minutes after we spotted him. We regret not taking a picture, but we didn't want to take our eyes off him (which is why the video pans to the sky several times).
We can't believe we even spotted him, but we really had that feeling like someone or something (in this case) was watching us. We kept looking back and saw the strangest rock formation that we had not noticed before - two pointy things balancing on a slightly rounder rock. We kept looking back at it as we made our way up to the very end of the trail, only to soon realize that those pointing things were EARS! And it was a wild Mountain Lion watching us!!
Anyway...
BEST. DAY. EVER (after he decided to run off and not eat us of course).

Rattlesnake - Big Bend National Park, TX - Lost Mines Trail
I apparantely almost stepped on this 4 ft rattlesnake. My father in law noticed it coiled up looking like it was ready to strike. It was right off the side of the trail. We were lucky he noticed it in time, as there were still 5-6 ppl that were getting ready to pass it.

On a recent trip to West Texas for a memorial service for my Father, my brother and I took a few extra days to expose our families to the vastness of West Texas and the home of their Grandfather. Join us as we take them to see some of the sights that is WEST TEXAS.
Santa Elena Canyon is located on the most Western part of the Big Bend National Park and is about a 40 minute drive from the Chisos Basin. The hike into the canyon is relatively easy but the lack of a breeze and the sweltering heat from the low lying area was stifling.
While staying in Big Bend National Park, we elected to stay in the Chisos Lodge located in the Chisos Basin. Temperatures in low lying lands in the park can reach into the 100's F during the summer. But you can count on a temperature differential of at least 10 degrees or more when in the higher elevations of the Chisos. Granted summer is not the best time to visit the park but schedules some times can't be altered. The best times to visit the park are in the Fall and Spring.
