My cousin Herman guest stars in this video, scuba diving the famous Vandenberg wreck site off the coast of Key West with Lost Reef Adventures.
The USS Vandenberg was a transport ship in the United States Navy during WWII. It was intentionally scuttled as an artificial reef in 2009, seven miles off the coast of Key West. The Vandenberg measures 10 stories high in the water column, the keel the deepest, at 140 feet deep.
It is at the top of the structure that most of the ship's interesting attributes are located, some purposely cut from one part of the ship and welded elsewhere to make attention-getting dive spots from bow to stern, all trimmed to reach within 40 to 50 feet of the surface.
Some of the Vandenberg locals include barracudas, arrow crabs, Goliath groupers, moray eels, and much more. Diving at artificial reefs helps ease some of the tourism stress on the delicate natural reefs of the ecosystem.
The USS Vandenberg has become one of the best artificial reef dive sites for recreational divers worldwide. Warm water almost year-round, tropical conditions, and the vacation/resort atmosphere of Key West combine to make the Vandenberg a most desirable destination for ecotourism.
The ship was used originally as a U.S. Navy troop transport named the Gen. Harry Taylor. It was renamed the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg in 1963, and tracked the U.S. space program’s launches off Cape Canaveral. It also served in the Pacific monitoring U.S. defense missile test launches and eavesdropped on Russian missile launches during the Cold War. Port Canaveral, Fla., was the Vandenberg’s last active duty homeport beginning in 1976.
The Vandenberg was retired in 1983 and 10 years later was formally struck from the naval register and transferred to the U.S. Maritime Administration. The ship received its most public exposure when cast as a Russian science ship in “Virus,” a 1999 motion picture starring Jamie Lee Curtis, William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland.
The Vandenberg represents the southernmost part of the Florida Keys Shipwreck Trail, a series of intentionally sunken vessels that begins off Key Largo with the former Navy landing ship dock Spiegel Grove.

Scuba Diving in Key Largo, Florida: Molasses Reef, French Reef, Benwood & Spiegle Grove dive sites
The most frequently visited dive site in the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, and likely the world, is known as Molasses Reef. During World War II, near midnight on April 9th, 1942, the Norwegian merchant freighter Benwood was on a routine path from Florida to Virginia, transporting a load of phosphate rock. It was running with no lights to avoid being spotted by German U-boats, which was common for ships throughout the war. The Spiegle Grove ship is enormous and much larger than any natural reef structure in the Keys. In fact, at the time of its sinking, the Spiegel Grove was the largest ship ever intentionally sunk to create a new reef for divers, and it remains one of the largest ships ever scuttled for that purpose.

Neptune Memorial Reef (Atlantis) Dive - Miami, FL p1
Neptune Memorial Reef in Biscayne Bay National Park in Miami, Florida. As you can see from the video this place was created to depict the lost city of Atlantis. The other interesting fact about this place is its also called the underwater graveyard! Great place to dive and lots of neat saline and artificial reefs! We ended up getting pushed out to sea from the large currents and the video was cut short, but still a great place to dive. Video was taken on GoPro Hero 3

Rainbow Reef Dive #1 - Duane Wreck
The Duane Wreck - Key Largo, FL
The USCGC William J. Duane, none simply as the Duane, is a 327ft Coast Guard Cutter that was named after the Secretary of the Treasury under President Andrew Jackson. She was built in 1936 along with six other Coast Guard Cutters.
The Duane had a very storied career. She served patrol duty in the North Atlantic and Viet Nam. She served convoy escort duty in 1942, served as the flag ship for Major General John O’Daniel who headed Operation Dragoon during the D-Day invasion and assisted in the sinking of a German U-Boat. The Duane has a connection to the history of the State of Florida. She served escort duty during the Mariel Boat Lift which brought thousands of Cuban Refugees to the Florida Keys in 1980. Her proudest accomplishments were the hundreds of lives saved during her service.
The Duane was sunk in 1987 and quickly became the number one wreck dive in the United States of America. She sits upright in the sand at a maximum depth of 125ft. Her deck is at 100ft. and the top of the crow’s nest is at 50ft. You can see most any of the varied reef fish that Key Largo offers. The really exciting part of diving on the Duane is the squadron of Great Barracuda that patrol the area and the pelagic species that just might swim by such as Bull Sharks and the occasional Whale Shark in the early spring.
This dive is an advanced level dive. All dive operators require either and Advanced Dive Certification with recent diving experience or to be able to show two eighty foot or deeper dives in your log book within the last 12 months. You can also hire one of Key Largo’s experienced dive Instructors or Dive Masters to take you on a guided dive. You should arrange a minimum of one week in advance of your trip.

Stranded on a deserted island in the Florida Keys
On our first camping trip to a deserted island in the Florida Keys we had a great time and the weather was perfect. Little did we know that the boat anchor would come loose in the middle of the night and leave us stranded at low tide.
Snorkeling Sand Key Lighthouse with FURY Water Adventures Key West : Ep.08
Best reef in the continental United States.
Prior to arriving in Key West I had been researching reefs on google earth and found a spot about 5 miles out. I have snorkeled in Cancun, Hawaii, and Dominican Republic and I was curious to see how the Florida Keys compared. We booked a Catamaran Morning Snorkel Tour 24 hours ahead of time with FURY Water Adventure.
It takes about 45 minutes to motor/sail to the Sand Key Lighthouse from the Margaritaville Marina. The ride out is actually very enjoyable. The turquoise water is just so calming and tranquil. The crew is very friendly and they all seemed very professional and well-trained. They provide all the snorkel gear and give a short safety briefing and let you loose into the water.
The Reef and the Fish
Once we jumped in I was highly impressed with how clean and clear the water was. The visibility was great and from what I could tell, Hurricane Irma had spared much of the reef. Lot’s of sea fans, brain coral, blue tang, butterfly fish, damsel fish, parrot fish, yellow tail snapper, chromis, banded butterfly fish, bluehead wrasse, blue chromis, silverside, black dragon fish, and a green moray eel. Not too shabby! The reef was healthy and thriving. I was hoping to spot a sea turtle or black tip reef shark but no luck on this trip.
The sail back to the marina was smooth and relaxing with the crew serving complimentary beer and soda. We were fortunate enough to be in town during the World Championship Power Speed Boat Races. We got to catch some speedboats zooming by us as we neared the Marina.
Mallory Square
After wrapping up an epic snorkel session at key west lighthouse we explored Mallory Square with is a tourist destination close to the Cruise Port. This tourist site is full of great shopping and street performers. One of my favorite shops was the Key West Shell Warehouse. They have a huge selection of Shells, Starfish, and Coral for sale.
No trip to Key West is complete without a trip to the Margaritaville Restaurant for a lime margarita. So freaking good, but just prepare yourself, they are $15!!!
On a tip we decided to walk across town to a place called Sandy’s Cafe to try the world famous Cuban Sandwich. Amazing! Get the Authentic Cuban, you will not be disappointed.

WTD #6. Snorkeling Florida Coral Reef/ Christ of the Abyss / Florida Keys Snorkeling
Who doesn't love relaxing Key West? This week our RV family adventures took us snorkeling John Pennekamp coral reef on a snorkeling tour in Key Largo, Florida. The Christ of the abyss in key largo was really awesome to see.
From there we headed out to Key West, Florida. On our way down we stopped at Bahia Honda State Park. Down in Key West, we visited Fort Zachary Taylor state park. We rented a charter boat and captain and went out to the only coral reef in the US.
Florida coral reef snorkeling is unbelievable so if you have a chance definitely take it.

Scuba Diving USNS General Hoyt S Vandenberg - Florida
Diving USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg
Key West, Florida, USA
December 2015
with Captain's Corner
USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg (T-AGM-10) (originally named USS General Harry Taylor (AP-145)) was a General G. O. Squier-class transport ship in the United States Navy in World War II named in honor of U.S. Army Chief of Engineers Harry Taylor. She served for a time as army transport USAT General Harry Taylor, and was reacquired by the navy in 1950 as USNS General Harry Taylor (T-AP-145).
The ship was sunk 6 miles (10 km) off the Florida Keys in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
On 12 April 2009, the Vandenberg left the shipyard and began the long tow to Key West. On 22 April 2009 she arrived in the Key West Harbor where she was moored at the East Quay Pier. The sinking took place on Wednesday, 27 May 2009.
At 522ft long the Vandenberg is the second largest artificial reef in the world.
