Madama Ganna Walska, a well-known Polish opera singer and socialite, purchased the Santa Barbara property in 1941 and spent the next 43 years of her life designing unusual display gardens with exotic plants. She experimented freely with bold forms and unusual color combinations, contrasting serene, traditional vistas with daring theatrical displays. She described herself as an enemy of the ordinary.

Participants sit in the chair and it begins to move its large feather wings in concert with the participant’s breath. On inspiration, the wings open wide. On expiration, the wings gently close. By sensing changes in the center of gravity, the chair mimics the breathing patterns of the participant.
