Lough Gur Heritage Centre
Our Visit to Limerick City & Lough Gur
We had a lovely stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa just outside Limerick City. During our stay we explored Limerick City & headed out to Lough Gur.
I was really taken with the history at Lough Gur. People have lived there for over 6,000 years! There is a beautiful Lough Gur Heritage Centre that explains the history of the area. The audio walking tour was so interesting to learn about the history and the folklore surrounding Lough Gur.
A short drive from Lough Gur is the Stone Circle at Grange. It’s the largest stone circle in Ireland and has a spiritual feeling about it.

Lough Gur, Limerick, Ireland (3000BC) --- before development 1967 #loughgur #limerick #ireland

Lough Gur (Irish: Loch Gair) is a lake in County Limerick, Ireland between the towns of Herbertstown and Bruff. The lake forms a horseshoe shape at the base of Knockadoon Hill and some rugged elevated countryside. It is one of Ireland's most important archaeological sites. Humans have lived near Lough Gur since about 3000 BC and there are numerous megalithic remains there.
Grange stone circle (the largest stone circle in Ireland) and a dolmen are located near the lake. The remains of at least three crannogs are present, and remains of Stone Age houses have been unearthed (the house outlines are known as The Spectacles). A number of ring forts are found in the area, with one hill fort overlooking the lake. Some are Irish national monuments.
A visitors' centre is open beside Lough Gur, along with a car park and picnic area. A gradual shore-line is present at the visitor area, with a shallow section of lake reaching up to the maintained lawn. As a result, the area is often used for water sports, though motorised craft are banned on the lake.
There is a castle, or tower house (closed to visitors) near the entrance to the carpark. Named Bourchier's Castle after Sir George Bourchier, the son of the second Earl of Bath, it lies at the neck of the peninsula around which the lake washes. There is some other architecture dating from more recent times, with the ruins of an early Christian church by the road leading down to the lake. At the far end of the lake are the ruins of a Norman castle, Black Castle, which is reached by a hill-side walk along the east side of the lake. This is one of the keeps used during the Desmond Rebellions, and is probably the place where the Earl of Desmond secured his authority in 1573 after casting off his English apparel and donning Irish garments on his return to Munster from London.
Lough Gur
Located just 21km from Limerick City, near the town of Bruff, the ancient site of Lough Gur is known in folklore as the Munster entrance to Tír an Óg. It is recorded in history for thousands of years that Lough Gur was a highly desirable location as Chieftans and great warriors, including Vikings, descended on the area. The video includes also a discussion the Grange stone circle which marries astronomy and archaeology to contemplate and explore what exactly these sites may have been used for over 6,000 years ago. Lough Gur Heritage Centre review
The region around Lough Gur is a remarkable area of archaeological interest. The landscape features sites that represent every major period of human history in Ireland. Physical evidence of occupation from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Early Christian, Medieval, Early Modern and Modern eras has been found in the immediate vicinity. Here's the link to my review.

Adare Heritage Centre in Ireland's Prettiest Village (Limerick)
Snuggled in a wooded setting among the rich farmlands of the Golden Vale by the River Maigue, Adare is a model village dating from the time of the Norman conquest.
It has been home to the Earls of Dunraven (Quin family) for over three centuries. Thatched cottages line its broad streets, punctuated with beautiful stone buildings and picturesque ruins.
Adare Heritage Centre houses the Adare Historical Exhibition, Dovecote Restaurant, shopping facilities, tourist information and also organise Desmond Castle Tours.

Limerick - Ireland
Limerick is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland, and the principal city in County Limerick. Population wise, it is the fifth largest city in all of Ireland. When taking the extra-municipal suburbs into account, Limerick is the third largest conurbation in the Republic of Ireland, with an urban population of 90,757.[4] Limerick is the second-largest city in the province of Munster, an area which constitutes the midwest and southwest of Ireland. The city is situated on several curves and islands of the River Shannon, which spreads into an estuary shortly after Limerick. Road infrastructure features four main crossing points near the city centre (an additional river tunnel to the west of the three bridges opened in July 2010). Limerick is one of the constituent cities of the Cork-Limerick-Galway corridor, which has a population of 1 million. ( source Wikipedia )
