Vancouver students cultivate plentiful farms in the midst of busy city
The world's human population is expected to surpass 9.5 billion people by 2050, according to the United Nations.
That'll most likely create growing strain on the world's food supply.
Researchers, students and farmers now in Vancouver are trying to help the supply of food by using sustainable agriculture methods in the midst of their bustling city.
Agriculture student Crysta Lehmann is working hard, but she's never been more fulfilled.
She's one of 10 sustainable agriculture students at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.
They're part of an intensive, eight-month program designed to help people learn about and develop a wide range of sustainable and community-based food systems.
Today, she's busy harvesting hundreds of radishes.
These long days under the sun have helped her find her calling in life.
She plans to own and operate her own farm in the coming years.
Everything I learn about plants and everything I learn about the process and different systems it just adds onto my passion for it, she says.
And makes me feel even more confident that that's something I could definitely spend my life doing - with joy.
The UBC Farm is a 59-acre property situated within a coastal hemlock forest at the south end of the university's sprawling campus.
The farm produces over 200 varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs.
There are also honey beehives and open pasture hens.
The farm is also home to the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC.
Over 3,000 students enrolled in 60 courses at 10 different faculties and schools engage with the centre as part of course work, internships and volunteer opportunities.
The centre aims to become an internationally-renowned research and teaching space focused on sustainable food systems.
Over the past two decades, the UBC campus has seen a significant rise in residential development.
The land that the farm sits on is worth tens of millions of dollars.
The farm has existed in some form on the university campus for decades, but its future was unclear for over a decade.
In 2009, the university committed itself to protecting the farm provided its goals could be met by transferring things to other parts of campus.
Seth Friedman is coordinator of the practicum program.
Together with students, he's currently harvesting hundreds of kale plants.
It is challenging work and the hours are long, but most of all Friedman is grateful the farm's future is secure.
There was a big push to keep this farm alive, keep this land in production and it took the support of the community, the administration, the students, he says.
Everyone came together and it's a success story, and there's unfortunately too few of those out there, but I see an increasing desire and appreciation for what space like this offers in an urban setting.
According to the UBC Farm, if the world's human population surpasses 9.5 billion by 2050 as predicted, global food demand will increase by 70 percent if current consumption patterns continue.
The farm's researchers add that climate change will exacerbate food security challenges.
Hotter temperatures and shrinking water supplies could reduce crop yields by 25 percent between 2030 and 2049.
The farm says urban farming provides an opportunity to create food in under-utilised spaces.
They also claim that by bringing food production closer to where people live, they can increase access to food as well as provide opportunities for city dwellers to learn how food is grown.
This farm sells its produce at farmers' markets and students and instructors often meet to share a weekly meal.
Today, it's student Dave Semmelink's turn to prepare the food.
It's just one step towards realising his dreams.
