Krebs, Oklahoma
Krebs is a city in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,053 at the 2010 census, a slight increase from 2,051 at the 2000 census. Its nickname is Little Italy. It was founded before Oklahoma statehood as a coal mining town in the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory.
Krebs was founded in the late 1800s and the first post office was established in 1886. It began as a coal-mining camp housing European immigrants who came to work coal mines in the surrounding area. The town is named after Judge Edmond Folsom Krebs (1821-1893). Judge Krebs was born of mixed German and Choctaw ancestry in Winston County, Mississippi and served the Choctaw Nation as a judge in McAlester, Indian Territory.
An explosion in the Osage Coal & Mining Company’s No. 11 mine on January 7, 1892 killed about 100 workers and injured another 150, but mining continued to prosper. By 1895, there were 15 mines operating nearby. The first local of the United Mine Workers in Indian Territory was founded in the town in 1898. Krebs was linked to McAlester by the Choctaw Railway and Lighting Company interurban railroad.
Krebs was incorporated in the Choctaw Nation in 1903, with Mel D. Reed elected as the first mayor and Bob Miller as the first chief of police. The current St. Joseph's Catholic Church was constructed in 1903. It and an opera house were the first two brick buildings in town. An earlier church and the first opera house, both built of wood, had previously burned down.
The Krebs school system was organized in 1907, the same year that the Choctaw Nation and Indian Territory governments were replaced by the new State of Oklahoma.
The Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad (also known as the MKT or Katy) built a branch from McAlester to Wilburton, on which it ran a two-coach train known affectionately as Nellie. The Katy station was in downtown Krebs. Later, another ...

We visit a Made in Oklahoma restaurant that has history all its own.
SAY WHAT WEDNESDAY: Bonus OK Adventures in Krebs!
Magical things transpire in Krebs - Oklahoma's own Little Italy. Paige & I eat possibly the most food we've ever eaten at Pete's Place...where spaghetti & ravioli are considered appetizers (AKA: Paige's own personal version of Heaven). More special guests too...this time, my mom & dad! They love shenanigans & Italian food just as much as the next guy.

The verbatim script follows below...
PETE'S PLACE IN KREBS, OKLAHOMA HAS BEEN DRAWING HUNGRY CROWDS SINCE 1925.
THE ITALIAN RESTAURANT IS NOW IN IT'S THIRD GENERATION OF OWNERSHIP AND OPERATION.
PETE PRICHARD WHO STARTED THE PLACE IS A LEGEND AND HIS GRANDSON MAY BE CREATING A NEW LEGEND FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONS TO COME.
O-E-T-A'S LIS EXON EXPLAINS.
THIS IS PETE'S PLACE TODAY. IT'S A HUGE RESTAURANT IN KREBS, OKLAHOMA, JUST THREE MILES FROM MCALESTER.
AN EYE-CATCHING SIGN OUTSIDE POINTS TO IT'S ORIGIN AS A FAMILY STYLE ITALIAN RESTAURANT. PETE'S PLACE OPENED IN 1925 ON THIS SAME FAMILY LAND WHERE THE EXPANDED RESTAURANT SITS TODAY.
THIS IS WHAT THE RESTAURANT LOOKED LIKE IN IT'S EARLY DAYS. IT WAS THE PRICHARD HOUSE. PETE PRICHARD, SEEN HERE IN LATER YEARS, STARTED THE RESTAURANT AS A YOUNG MAN. HE WAS AN IMMIGRANT FROM ITALY WHO NEEDED TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO EARN A LIVING AFTER BEING INJURED IN A MINING ACCIDENT.
BUT IT WASN'T ITLAIAN FOOD HE SERVED FIRST. HE DREW IN MINERS WHO DOWNED HIS CHOC BEER.
The legend of choc beer has it that 41:30 in 1919 my grandfather who had become injured in the coal mines as a young man learned how to make this beer from the Choctaw indians
TODAY PETE'S GRANDSON JOE PRICHARD IS THE OWNER AND OPERATOR OF PETE'S PLACE.
AND HE HAS RE-STARTED AN OLD TRADITION WITH A SOPHISTICATED OPERATION.
A SLEEK BREWERY LOCATED ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE RESTAURANT IS OPERATING AT A BRISK PACE.
HERE YOU ARE SEEING 350 POUNDS OF BARLEY BEING MIXED FOR A BREW.
THIS IS THE PACKAGING ROOM WERE THE HUGE VATS SUPPLY THE BEER TO THE TUBING WHICH ULTIMATELY FILLS THE BOTTLES ON THE PRODUCTION LINE.
THEY STARTED DISTRIBUTING SOLELY IN OKLAHOMA IN 2004. NOW THE BEER IS ALSO SHIPPED TO KANSAS, ARKANSAS, TEXAS AND WISCONSIN.
Typically we are packaging five days a week and our brew schedule right
now is we like to brew twice a day Tuesday through Friday
AND IN JUNE THEY HAD THEIR BEST MONTH EVER. THEY ALMOST COULDN'T KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.
It's been quite a learning experience we are a whole whole lot better than we once were. We are making better beer than we have ever made, we are making beer more efficiently than we have ever made and we have still got a long way to go to be really good at it but it is quite an interesting little experience I can tell you
JOE IS PRETTY MODEST ABOUT THEIR PROGRESS BUT HE WILL TELL YOU THEY JUST WON AN AWARD FROM THE NORTH AMERICAN BEER ASSOCIATION FOR THE DESIGNS ON THEIR CARTONS OF THEIR SIX DIFFERENT KINDS OF BOTTLED BEER.
BEGINNING WITH THE CARTON BEARING PETE'S GIVEN ITALIAN NAME , YOU CAN SEE THAT WHEN THE CARTONS ARE PLACED SIDE BY SIDE THE PICTURES CREATE A MONTAGE TELLING SOME OF THE HISTORY OF CHOC BEER.
The legend has it that they brewed beer legally and legally 43:05 43:11 all the way through proibition from 1925 all the way through prohibition.
So do you think some day your going to have grandchildren and they are going to say well the story is my grandfather started this brewery..ya maybe we'll see
