The reconstructing of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana
My partner, Camila, and I worked on this story for Northwestern University in Qatar during our sophomore year. It was a summer course in New Orleans where we had a two weeks to put together. The Lower 9th Ward was hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina with the most deaths and damage. Now, its being reconstructed with the focus of rebuilding environmentally friendly.
New Orleans - Tour of Lower 9th Ward NOLA - 5/30/13
Tour of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, LA. This is one of the poorest yet culturally significant wards (neighborhoods) in the entire city and was the scene of utter devastation following Hurricane Katrina. Much of the neighborhood still has the scars of Katrina. Was surprised at how much they have rebuilt. They are still rebuilding and they have done their best to return the historical neighborhood to some sense of normalcy. Please keep the people of NOLA in your thoughts and prayers. It is an amazing city and full of unique culture. Had a great time and I cannot wait to go back!
Special appearance by one of Fats Domino's original band members. Legendary drummer Smokey Johnson is in front of his home and gives everyone a wave. Smokey is a Lower 9th Ward & Jazz Music Icon in NOLA. Thank you to cajunencounters.com for the fun and educational tour of the city.
Are newcomers a mixed blessing for the Lower Ninth Ward?
With so many residents gone since Hurricane Katrina, can the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans ever bounce back? William Brangham reports on the historically black neighborhood’s struggle to sustain and rebuild community while lacking sources of economic development and facing signs of gentrification.

Lower Ninth Ward - New Orleans, LA
This is a compilation of pictures that I photographed while down in New Orleans for a mission trip to help rebuild some of the homes down there.
The music is Syriana (Piano Solo) by Alexandre Desplat from the soundtrack to the motion picture Syriana. I know the pictures aren't the best, and the last word of the closing statement is cut off which I realized AFTER an hour and a half of exporting. It is made in accompaniment to a paper I wrote for my freshman English class.
Enjoy!

Lower 9th Ward New Orleans
Our church did a high school mission trip to New Orleans, 4 years after Hurrican Katrina flooded the city and left such devastation. This video is of the Lower 9th Ward, just a few hundred yards from the first broken levee that flooded and took the lives of hundreds of people. At one time, these streets had dead bodies floating down them. People were devastated and still struggle with the destruction of the storm today. Pray for the people of New Orleans. They still have a long way to go for recovery.
They blew the levee to flood the lower 9th ward
My facebook page:
SHOCKING!!: Walker, Louisiana Mayor Says Flood Was Man-Made 8/14/16 100% PROOF!
Witnesses heard bombs going off to flood the lower 9th ward to get rid of the blacks in this area at 4am. There was no way the storm could have flooded the lower 9th by its self or broke the levee. This was all well planned out and plotted.
This is a crude sketch an explanation of what really happened the night of Katrina in New Orleans when they blew the levee. The evil plot was planned in advance to flood and destroy the 9th ward or the city! The way I see it they did not need the Hurricane to destroy the 9th ward the city the hurricane was just a false flag! NO ONE will ever convince me it was not a planned event!
What do they have--about two week lead time that a hurricane will likely end up in the gulf? I know as sure as I can be, that they knew the plan to empty the Lake into the 9th would work. There is strong consensus among scientists that man can affect direction and speed to some unknown extent, and Katrina, followed by (can't remember the 2n'd one's name) could cloud the truth and the media could spin anything it was told.
They deliberately tested martial law there, and the effect of breaking up and scattering a close-knit people all over several states, further weakening their will to resist such treatment. I was sickened as their plans unfolded, and I couldn't do a thing. I'll never forgive that government for that, and I'll never get over it, either.
It broke my heart to see what evil men can do. Please tell me you get it!!!!

Hurricane Katrina Aftermath: Lower Ninth Ward (New Orleans) Tour
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall east of downtown New Orleans and resulted in the devastation of large portions of the Gulf Coast region. Among the hardest hit areas within Orleans Parish was the Lower Ninth Ward, a neighborhood east of downtown surrounded by levees and situated below sea level. Virtually 100% of the structures in this area were flooded and either heavily damaged or destroyed and progress has been slow over the years in attempting to rebuild the neighborhood.
This video is an informal driving survey that takes viewers down both the major and minor streets and alleys of the Lower Ninth Ward, examining the condition of the neighborhood eleven years after Katrina and locating significant landmarks in the neighborhood both prior to and since the storm.
Lower Ninth Ward Highlights (Hurricane Katrina Aftermath):
