Lower Circular Road Cemetery Kolkata All SOULS DAY
All Saints Day | All Souls Day | Lower Circular Road Cemetery Kolkata
In Christianity, All Souls' Day commemorates All Souls, the Holy Souls, or the Faithful Departed; that is, the souls of Christians who have died. Observing Christians typically remember deceased relatives on the day. In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on 2 November and is associated with the three days of Allhallowtide, including All Saints' Day (1 November) and its vigil, Halloween (31 October). In the Catholic Church, the faithful refers specifically to baptized Catholics; all souls commemorates the church penitent of souls in Purgatory, whereas all saints commemorates the church triumphant of saints in Heaven. In the liturgical books of the western Catholic Church (the Latin Church) it is called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (Latin: Commemoratio omnium fidelium defunctorum), and is celebrated annually on 2 November. In the ordinary form and Divine Worship form of the Roman Rite, it remains on 2 November if this date falls on a Sunday; in the extraordinary form, it is transferred to Monday, 3 November. On this day in particular, Catholics pray for the dead. In the Church of England it is called The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls' Day) and is an optional celebration; Anglicans view All Souls' Day as an extension of the observance of All Saints' Day and it serves to remember those who have died, in connection with the theological doctrines of the resurrection of the body and the Communion of Saints. In the Eastern Orthodox Church and the associated Eastern Catholic Churches, it is celebrated several times during the year and is not associated with the month of November.

PARK STREET CEMETERY KOLKATA 2019|HAUNTED PLACE IN KOLKATA|WALK WITH BONG BOYS|HISTORY OF CEMETERY|
South Park Street Cemetery is located on Mother Teresa Sarani, Kolkata, India. The road used to be called Park Street, and prior to that Burial Ground Road.
The Park Street Cemetery was one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world, and probably the largest Christian cemetery outside Europe and America in the 19th century. Opened in 1767 on what was previously a marshy area, the cemetery was in use until about 1830 and is now a heritage site, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The cemetery was opened to relieve the pressure on the old burial ground in the heart of the city. The road leading to the cemetery came to be known as the Burial Ground Road but was subsequently renamed Park Street after the park around Vansittart's garden house. By the year 1785 the burial ground had been extended on the northern side of Park Street and by 1840 a vast new cemetery was opened to the east of the Lower Circular Road. The Europeans started to disuse it in the year 1790. It has been confirmed by a marble plaque at the gate which reads South Park Street, Opened:1767, Closed:1790.
Tollywood's Bengali film, Gorosthaney Sabdhan (literal translation: Beware in the cemetery) was shot here. The film was based on the novel of the same name by Satyajit Ray.
Notable Tombs:
Rose Aylmer (died 1800)
Elizabeth Barwell (died 1779)
George Bogle (1746–1781), diplomat
Lieutenant-General Sir John Clavering (c.1722-1777), army officer
Augustus Cleveland (d. 1784), colonial administrator
Captain Edward Cooke, (1772-1799), Royal Navy officer
Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809–1831), teacher and poet
Sir Elijah Impey (1732-1809), judge
Sir William Jones (1746–1794), Indologist, founder of the Asiatic Society
Colonel Robert Kyd (1746–1793), botanist
Lieut. Col. Colin Mackenzie (1754–1821), Surveyor General of India
Sir John Hadley D'Oyly, 6th Baronet (1754–1818), politician
Major-General Charles Stuart (1758–1828), army officer and Indophile popularly known as Hindoo Stuart
Walter Landor Dickens, son of English novelist Charles Dickens. He was buried initially in Bhowanipore war cemetery and the tombstone was later moved here in 1987
The memorials are almost all architecturally imposing and replete with classical details and sculptures. Among the interesting professions mentioned in the epitaphs are: breeder of cattle, jail-keeper, silversmith, schoolteacher, architect, translator, livery, printer, head tide-waiter, park superintendent, cooper, postmaster and surgeon.
Grave 363 and the oldest
This grave contains only the following epitaph, possibly indicating that the person wished to remain anonymous: A virtuous mother (died 1825). The oldest grave in this graveyard is of Mrs.S.Pearson.(1768)
Features
The tombs are a mix of Gothic and the rich flavour of the Indo-Saracenic style. Among the Indo-Saracenic tombs is a unique and composite brick structure built in the ‘panchyatana’ manner, with a central dome flanked by miniature replicas of Orissan ‘rekha deul’ on four sides. Coupled with this peculiarity, the black basalt carvings on the frontal façade indicate a distinct respect for the Hindu faith.
Few notorious people along with some so called modern and educated persons making this place more like a park. They are doing many wrong thing over here. People are trying to steal the historical valuable things from here.
We desperately request to this people place do not abuse this place. Stop stealing. Many European people visit here. They are getting negative messages about us, about our city & about our country.
We all need to come forward and need to take any step to stop this nonsense immediately.

Lower circular road cemetery Haunted???
The South Park Street Cemetery is not the only haunted cemetery in Kolkata. The Lower Circular Road Cemetery is also known for paranormal activities. The story about this place goes like there was a Civil Servant in the British Era, Sir William Hay MacNaghten, who was killed brutally during the first Anglo-Afghan War. His body was ripped apart and it was his wife who visited Afghanistan, assembled the left over parts of his body, returned to Kolkata and buried it here in the Lower Circular Road Cemetery. In case anyone narrates his story near his grave, the huge tree above the grave starts shivering.

South Park Street Cemetery-A visit to the old Park Street Cemetery in Kolkata in 2019
52, Park Street, Opp Assembly Of God Church, Kolkata, West Bengal 700017. It has been confirmed by a marble plaque at the gate which reads South Park Street, Opened:1767, Closed:1790.Possibly one of the earliest cemeteries not connected to a church, and probably the largest Christian cemetery outside Europe and America in the 19th century, the South Park Street Cemetery no longer welcomes the dead but attracts hordes of the living. Opened in 1767 and used actively until the 1830s, the eight-acre necropolis is enclosed by a high brick wall that protects the eclectic mix of tombs, cenotaphs, and mausoleums. The nearly 1900 graves represent a melting pot of design influences from European gothic to classical antiquity to Indo-Saracenic styles all jumbled up in a maze of obelisks, cairns, urns, and sarcophagi. A number of the graves belong to famous military and political figures of the time, including Sir William Jones, founder of the Asiatic Society, whose towering memorial obelisk is the tallest of the structures in the graveyard. While South Park Street Cemetery is undergoing constant upkeep and renovations, the rich tropical surroundings continue to encroach on the moldering stones. Green mosses and prehistoric ferns cover much of the grounds making for a haunting setting for visitors looking for a little history in their boneyards. If you are carrying a camera, the ticket price would be Rs. 50. The normal ticket price is Rs. 20.
Fantastic 250 year old cemetery - Kolkata, India
The South Park Street Cemetery in central Kolkata is one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world. It opened in 1767 and was in use until about 1830, despite the plaque on the entry gate claiming it closed in 1790. Although Europeans started not to use it as much after that time. 1600 grave sites or tombs are located there with a vast array of fascinating architecture. Many of the tombs and monuments are of a size rarely seen in more modern cemeteries. The oldest grave is of Mrs. S. Pearson who died in 1768. Many of the markers are touching, especially of young women and children who most likely followed their husbands and fathers to India and then met with premature death from tropical diseases.
