Lower Silver Falls Baraga County Michigan-time lapse
On my second day of my fall trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I arrived early as the sun rose at Lower Silver Falls in Baraga County. The first time I visited the falls in 2010, they were exploding with color and I had hoped I would see the same this year. With the perfect 70's song on the radio I pulled up in the parking area, got out of my car and just stared at the beauty of the waterfall. It was so unbelievably colorful that I almost cried it was purely magical. You will see what I saw, you will feel what I felt that wonderful morning I spent at the waterfall.

The morning was fresh with the sun slowly rising over the tree tops. There is a crisp smell of old wood, pine, dirt and water. The sound of rushing and crashing could be heard as I moved closer to the river. As I looked over the the small bluff, a slight mist was floating down through the gorge blending in with the colorful background.
I was in one of my favorite places.
Memories of previous visits brought back a time when I was new to the U.P. and this was one of my first fall trip locations.
Lower Silver Falls is the last drop before the Silver River hits the great Lake Superior. A short drive from Skanee Road to the parking area will merit an almost instant view of the upper section in which the river is forced through a narrow channel. It then spreads out to sharp left corner and then flows slowly to the final crashing chute and cascade.
A special gift for me was seeing a Doe slowly swimming and hiding behind rocks and in the water as it made it's way across the crest of the falls. I was able to shoot a short clip of his journey.

Lower Silver River Falls, Baraga County, Michigan
The day after severe thunderstorms swept through the west central Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I ventured with friends up to Huron Bay, northeast of L'Anse in Baraga County. Along the way, we stopped to check out the Lower Silver River Falls, which were running high, but already had receded about 6 to 8 inches from the high-water mark on sandy parts of the bank.

Lower Silver Falls is located in Michigan's Baraga county on the Silver River. The Silver River has many drops, and they are lumped together into the Lower, Middle and Upper Falls. The Lower Falls are not particularly impressive but they are very easy to visit.
The falls consists of two chutes where the river is constricted to a narrow channel. The second is the larger of the two, and the river drops about 15 feet in a thirty foot stretch while taking a turn.
The falls are easy to reach. Head northeast from L'Anse on Skanee Road (it is called Main Street in L'Anse). Turn right onto Falls Road (I think the sign might actually say 'Silver Falls Road'). Follow this road to the end, where you will find a small park. Falls Road is at most a quarter mile long. It is a short and easy walk to view the falls.

Quartzite Falls Baraga County, Michigan time lapse
After spending a great morning at Canyon Falls, I headed up Arvon Road by the Slate River to my next destination. Quartzite Falls is located just downstream from Black Slate Falls on the Slate River in Baraga County, Michigan. This quite a unique waterfall as it contains drops, cascades and slides as part of the falls. One the day I visited, there were plenty of other folks enjoying the day, too. The rain had stopped and the clouds were slowly moving on bringing sunshine to the final part of my time there.

Ogemaw Falls Baraga County Michigan 4k
The last waterfall of the 2018 season.
Ogemaw Falls is that perfect little waterfall that's easy to hike. Located just east of Alberta Michigan off of Baraga Plains Road. As you turn left around a pond you will see a sign indicating the route to the waterfall. Park in one of the few spots along the road and hoof it 100 feet downstream to the falls. Caution, this is a wet area with slippery rock, be careful.

Leatherby Falls Baraga County Michigan 4k
Leatherby Falls is one of the more popular deep woods waterfalls in Baraga County, Michigan. This is made obvious by the ATV trails that have been newly created as of late. A unique waterfall in that it has rock potholes on the slide surface of the falls that forms a tiki-like face. The sun was burning through the trees, less than ideal for shooting a waterfall, but the light shining off of the drops of water as they cascade and hit the rocks is quite a nice touch.
