UK: LONDONDERRY: 23RD ANNIVERSARY OF BLOODY SUNDAY
English/Nat
Thousands of people have marched through the streets of Londonderry in Northern Ireland to mark the 23rd anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when 13 civilians were killed by British soldiers.
The people also gathered to hear Gerry Adams, president of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, condemn the British Government for moving too slowly on the peace process.
Five thousand mainly Catholic nationalists took to `the streets of Londonderry Sunday, the same streets where 13 civilians were killed by British paratroopers 23 years ago.
In January 1972, British paratroopers confronted pro-Republican protesters, fatally shooting the unarmed civilians.
The tragedy has since been known as Bloody Sunday and has been a rallying point for the I-R-A.
Sinn Fein President, Gerry Adams, was among today's peaceful marchers.
He later addressed the crowd and called for the healing process to begin between Republicans, who want a united Ireland and loyalists who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom. .
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We want to see a process of forgiveness of reconciliation. And I have acknowledged publicly, the hurt the Republicans have inflicted. I have acknowledged that as have others. But the Unionists also must acknowledge the hurt that they have inflicted and the Loyalists and especially the British Government.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein President.
He also criticised the British Government for not acting on the issue of I-R-A political prisoners.
He said the British Government had refused to recognise the democratic rights of large sections of his people and had made no significant effort to demilitarize the situation.
SOUNDBITE:
The British Government does not listen to public opinion when that public opinion is Irish public opinion. And the British Government is still moving too slow to engage in the peace process.
SUPER CAPTION: Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein President.
Adams also called for the permanent withdrawal of the British Army from all nationalist areas and for the permanent disbandment of the Royal Ulster Constabulary -the Northern Ireland police force.

NORTHERN IRELAND: PROTESTANTS VOW TO MARCH
English/Nat
Protestants in Northern Ireland have vowed to march along the walls of the divided city of Londonderry on Saturday despite barricades, barbed wire and armed troops.
With nationalist Catholics refusing to cancel their own march plans, tension in the city is high.
With the Protestant Apprentice Boys march due to take place on Saturday the nationalist community in Londonderry is taking no chances.
The army has already sectioned off part of the ancient city wall which skirts the Catholic enclave of the Bogside.
This has infuriated the pro-British Protestant community who say they have a right to march around their city. But after last month's clashes at Drumcree between marchers and nationalists the security forces are taking no chances.
Residents of the Bogside say they fear violence could erupt again.
SOUNDBITE:
After last year there was rioting at the top of the street. Everyone was running down here. The police will aim their plastic bullet guns and you're afraid in case any of the windows of your house get broke or anyone in your house gets hurt.
SUPER CAPTION: William McGuinness, Bogside resident.
SOUNDBITE:
We just live in fear. We just don't know what's going to happen. Children sometimes have had to be moved out of the street if it's got that bad. But hopefully this year it's not going to be as bad and nobody's going to move and (instead) stay in their houses.
SUPER CAPTION: Magella Frazer, Bogside resident
In an attempt to lessen the tense atmosphere nationalist leaders like Martin McGuinness, a senior official in Sinn Fein, the party that supports the Irish Republican Army, have urged supporters to show restraint.
SOUNDBITE:
They have shown themselves to be very sensible and very responsible in how they organise their parades. Recently we had huge demonstrations organised by them, all of which had no hint of trouble. Now I am absolutely confident in their ability to handle the situation on the ground over the course of the next two days. I add my voice to theirs for people to remain calm, to remain dignified and to remain peaceful.
SUPER CAPTION: Martin McGuinness, Deputy Leader Sinn Fein
The Fountain area of Derry is staunchly Protestant and pro British. Saturday's marching will be wound up here with a giant bonfire party.
Tonight the nationalist community plans their own demonstration, which could involve them marching through here.
But nationalist leaders, including McGuinness, have asked them to reconsider.
If they did there could be more than just fireworks.
While Unionists are determined to exercise their right to march, they too are hoping the next two days will pass off peacefully.
SOUNDBITE:
What I do want to see is at the end of the day, either tonight or tomorrow night, that this city will still be in one piece and that people can sigh with relief again and that everything will go normally from there on.
SUPER CAPTION: Alistair Simpson, Apprentice Boys Governor.
The talk here is for a peaceful outcome. But the same was said last month before the violence at Drumcree and the prospects do not look good.
