Lucerne has a very impressive main train station. It's been rebuilt, the facade of the old one is still here. But you'll find the train station will be your most convenient way to get in and out of Lucerne. There are tons of shops in it, and also the jumping off point for most buses that take you around the city. And the ferries that'll take you on the Golden Round Trip. And, as you can see by the departure sign, they have a lot of departures out of the station. The basement level of the train station is also home to one of Lucerne's latest open supermarkets. This Coop is open 'til 10pm everyday. It's also a great place to get chocolate, at Laderach. And cheap eats, if all those expensive places in the city have got you wallet broke, check out the Currywurst right here. Next to the train station, in this big, black, modern-looking building, that almost looks like a UFO landed, is Lucerne's Concert Hall and Art Museum. If you're a Star Trek fan, this building might remind you of the Borg cube, kinda looks like to me.
The biggest attraction in Lucerne, one 'cause it's big, and two 'cause this is where everybody comes, is the Lion Monument. This is a monument depicting the Swiss troops who died in 1792, in the French Revolution. It is a pretty sad lion, he's been impaled by a spear, and he's covering a shield over there, that depicts the French Monarchy. While it may not be the best attraction in Lucerne, 'cause it's certainly not the happiest, it is one that you have to come and see because everybody comes to see the sad lion. If you've watched any other of my Switzerland videos, you'll know I talk a lot about the fountains, and this city is no exception. In Lucerne, they have over 200 public fountains with running water from the mountains, tastes just like cold, refreshing Evian water. If you're thirsty, just come up to one of these fountains and you can use it, get some water, or maybe even wash your hands.
Just above the Lion Monument is the Glacier Garden. It's a natural rock formation that happened when glaciers moved over this part of Lucerne, many, many years ago. One of the interesting things that happens when glaciers go, you can see the scrape marks, but behind me there's also these potholes. There's a little one back here but there's a big one back there that's like nine meters deep. It's caused by the force of the water underneath the glacier. There's also a Glacier Museum, and a House of Mirrors. Admission's a little steep, but if you have the Swiss travel pass admission's free. The Hall of Mirrors, I'll say is very cool, because in this room it has the Alhambra Fountain in it. How many of me can you count? And no, this is not a special effect, this is really what this room looks like.
After you visit the Lion Monument, if you want some culture in the form of a big painting, you can visit the Bourbaki Panorama. It's in this nondescript building here, it is a 10 meter high, by 112 meter wrap around panoramic painting that is of the French internment, where the French army was interned in Switzerland back in 1891. It's very interesting, if you have the Swiss pass it's free, if not it's a small admission fee, just note that there's no air conditioning, so if it's hot then it's quite a heat wave inside.

Lucerne railway station (German: Bahnhof Luzern) is a major hub of the rail network of Switzerland, in the city of Lucerne in the canton of Lucerne. It is a terminal station serving domestic and international traffic on several rail lines, and is situated in a city centre and waterfront location on the south side of Lake Lucerne.The station is a terminal station serving domestic and international traffic on several rail lines. The lines from the east (Zürich–Lucerne and the Gotthard lines) pass to the north of Lucerne and then join the lines from the north (Olten–Lucerne line) and the west (Bern–Wolhusen–Lucerne line) and pass to the west of Lucerne before turning to approach the station from the south. The metre-gauge Brünig railway from the south and Interlaken also terminates at the station. Bahnhofplatz occupies the area between the front of the station and the lakefront, and is heavily used by the local buses. The landing stages used by the passenger ships of the Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees (SGV) occupy the lakeside of Bahnhofplatz, providing interchange between rail and water transport. An underground shopping mall lies below both the concourse of the railway station and Bahnhofplatz.

Travel by train to the amazing car-free villages Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren. From these vilages you can take a small mountain trade to Kleine Scheidegg at the foot of the Eiger; from here the train runs on one of the steepest railways to the Jungfraujoch.
At the summit there is a beautiful view over the Swiss alps.

Well, that is a fantastic city: Venice is unique, the watery wonderland. We spent two days here right in the heart of Venice so we really do get a good look at just to. Then we just roll our bags from the hotel up this convenient site ramp one block away, walking right to the train station. Most travelers don't know about this walkway because there's no sign - it's tucked away on the right side of the station, it's much better than climbing up the front steps with your luggage.
We help each other out with the baggage, very easily put the suitcases on board. There is plenty of room and make ourselves comfortable. And now we begin our train journey going from Venice all the way up north into Switzerland, to Lucerne, passing some of the industrial areas on the mainland right next to Venice, and then passing farmlands and suburbs, small towns.
There's food service on board the train - it is all very comfortable with beautiful scenery out the windows: rivers, vineyards, farms, and the foothills of the Alps off in the distance. Later in the day will be traveling right through the heart of the Alps as we approach Lucerne, Switzerland. For now, we're enjoying this wonderful vista.
And we arrive at the big train station in Milan - the second largest train station in Italy after the one in Rome - and we've got about an hour and a half layover here, so we have time for lunch. There's very convenient cafeteria/pizzeria with sandwiches. You can get a light bite, you can get pizza, some pasta. It's not any kind of a great restaurant, but it's a very convenient place to spend some time. Nice little café with chairs and tables - plenty room in there. It's a beautiful train station constructed in the 1930s primarily ran into some young military cadets friendly guys Army guys and you can wander about in the station. It kind of looks like ancient Roman bathhouse on an expanded scale, with touches of the Art Deco from the 1930s.
It has recently been renovated. The Milan train station has Metro lines downstairs so you could hop into the city very quickly from here if you had a few hours. We just have a little time, so we're looking around. There's new escalators, there is a new mezzanine level and shops, and the huge train barn with 24 tracks -- one of those spans is 70 yards wide, the longest train barn span in all of Europe. And we're quickly on our way on the next train heading north, which is going to bring us eventually up into Switzerland.
One of many scenic highlights is passing this beautiful little church couple of times on three sides of the train, we go around it, into a tunnel, come back out again, we see it again. And now we are in Switzerland, heading through the Alps, passing some beautiful lakes -- we will be passing Lakes Lugano and Lucerne the Vierwaldstatersee on our way to the beautiful town of Lucerne.
The trains in Europe are really deluxe and we travel first class, so it is smooth in air-conditioned comfort, it's nice and quiet. You got this amazing scenery out the windows -- Switzerland at its best. And there is always some kind of snack car or rolling snack cart.
We arrive in Lucerne, helping each other off the train with our baggage, very easily done. Walking through the Lucerne train station and then right across the river across the River Reuss directly to our hotel. It's only about eight-minute walk from the train station, nice and level sidewalks, right over to the hotel des Balances, where we check in and begin our Swiss adventure.
Easy Travels in a Modern Swiss Train Station
I’m in Luzern, at one of Switzerland’s many modern train stations. Traveling here, it occurs to me that a big part of the fun of being in Europe is just enjoying the everyday mechanisms of life over here: using ticket machines, jumping on trams, pushing buttons...just doing stuff. I’m generally pretty slow when it comes to getting things from machines, but lately, I’ve been impressed by how easy it is, across Europe, to get a ticket without waiting in line. (They’ve thought of everything — language barriers, different currencies, American credit cards — and it all works beautifully.) As you can see in this fun clip, ticket machines and train stations are getting really slick.
