There is only one important site in Luding, the Luding Bridge, built in 1702. A suspension bridge famous for what is commonly regarded as the most glorious moment of the Long March.
Mao's troops were trapped in 1935 on one side of the River where the National Army removed bridge planks and left just 13 heavy iron chains. Brave volunteers crawled over the bare iron chains under heavy machine gun fire from the other side.
And, yes. I did pay $1 to dress as one of Mao's heroic soldiers. It was either that or a typical Tibetan outfit. I made such a sight (probably not good) that throngs of Chinese tourists clicked off a gazillion photos of me... A moment of stardom...

As an essential crossing point along the route of the Tea Horse Road, Luding Bridge had been an important landmark for centuries, but in 1935 it became the stuff of Communist legend.
In a key battle during the Long March, 22 soldiers from the Chinese Workers and Peasants' Army crawled over the iron chains of the bridge under a heavy barrage of machine gun fire and threw grenades at the Kuomintang army that blocked their path to Yan'an.

It is the well-known 'Seized Luding Bridge' marked the most important turning point of the China's history. The bridge dates from the Qing Dynasty and is considered a historical landmark. In 1935, during the Long March, soldiers of the Fourth Regiment of the Chinese Workers and Peasants' Army secured the bridge as a river crossing vital to the Red Army.

大渡河位於中國四川省中西部,發源於青海省玉樹藏族自治州境內巴顏喀拉山南麓,向南入四川省分別流經阿壩藏族羌族自治州,甘孜藏族自治州,雅安市,涼山彝族自治州,樂山市,長1155公里.主源大金川發源於青海,四川邊境的果洛山,在四川丹巴縣與小金川匯合後稱大渡河,至樂山縣入岷江,長909公里,流域面積82,700平方公里,其中在金口河段的金口大峽谷最為著名,被譽為“世界最具魅力的天然公園”.

瀘定橋是一座懸索橋,跨度為101.6米,寬度為2.8米,底部距離枯水時的水面約14.5米.橋由13條鐵索組成,其中9條為底索,索間距離33厘米,上鋪橫木板,橫木板上再鋪八道縱木板作為橋面.另外4條鐵索則作為行人的扶欄.鐵索每根長127.45米,重約2.5噸,有碗口粗細,由800-900個扁環扣鏈而成.

Daduhe bridge Xingkang, 1100m span and 280m high, is the 6th more than 1km long span suspension bridge in China which cross a deep gorge,also the most difficult one. Located in Luding county, Sichuan province, just 5km north of the famous Luding bridge. Planning completed in 2018, it will become the east gate of Sichuan-Tibet expressway. Daduhe gorge so deep, east side Erlangshan mountain more than 5000m elevation,west side Tianhaizi mountain more than 6000m elevation,but Daduhe water level only slightly more than 1300m elevation. This is the first aerial of giant Daduhe bridge Luding .
雅康高速公路泸定大渡河兴康大桥，主跨1100米，桥面高280米。是中国在建的9座跨度超千米大桥之一，也是第六座超千米山区跨谷高桥。2018年建成后将成为川藏高速公路的东大门，和13.7公里长的新二郎山隧道并列为两大工程奇迹。桥两侧雪山二郎山和田海子分别高达海拔5000米和6000米以上，大渡河河谷只有海拔1300米。位于泸定县城以北，距离著名的泸定铁索桥5公里。这段视频是该桥首次航拍。
