Budapest sits on a patchwork of almost 125 thermal springs, and ‘taking the waters’ has been a part of everyday life here since people walked in togas. No baths still operating date back to Roman times but some are a legacy of the Turkish occupation, others are Art Nouveau marvels and there are even spic-and-span modern establishments boasting all the mod cons.

Badet har sin egen varmekilde og jeg kunne mærke det virkede mere effektfuldt på kroppen end andre bade.
i magasinetrask.dk er i nr 5 2011 side 56 artikel om thermalvandets helbredende virkning på en række lidelserbl.a. led-, muskel- og hudlidelser.
Badenes psykiske og psykosomatiske effekt er uomtvistelig.
I Ungarn er kurbad en del af lægeuddannelsen og og lægen kan udskrive resept til kurbad.
Der er også termalbade i provinsen; men ved at benytte badene i Budapest kan fås både kurbad og storbyferie smatidig.

The Széchenyi Medicinal Bath in Budapest
A Széchenyi gyógyfürdő, becenevén a Szecska, Budapest és egyben Európa legnagyobb fürdőkomplexuma, melynek építését 1909-ben kezdték meg Czigler Győző tervei alapján. A Városligetben található fürdő termálvízellátását jelenleg az 1938-ban átadott II. számú, „Szent István kút, hidegvíz ellátását 6 darab kisebb kút biztosítja. A komplexum 3 kültéri és 15 beltéri medencével rendelkezik.
A fürdő megépítésének gondolatával a főváros már 1884-ben foglalkozni kezdett. Megtervezésével Czigler Győző műegyetemi tanárt bízták meg. A közgyűlés azonban csak 1903-ban szentesítette határozatában Czigler terveit. Czigler még halála előtt értesülhetett a jóváhagyásról és állandó helyetteséül Dvorák Ede okleveles építészt és műegyetemi tanárt jelölte meg.
A helyszín többszörös módosítása után a tényleges építkezés 1909. május 7-én kezdődött meg. A művezető építész Schmitterer Jenő volt.
A fürdőt, amelyet addig Artézi fürdő néven emlegettek, 1913. június 16-án nyitották meg, már Széchenyi gyógyfürdő néven. A fürdő megépítése mintegy 3 900 000 aranykoronába került, az összes beépített terület 6220 négyzetméter volt.
A fürdő ekkor beosztása szerint magánfürdőkre, férfi és női gőzfürdőre, valamint férfi és női népfürdőre oszlott. A fürdő forgalma 1913-ban meghaladta a 200 000 főt, majd 1919-ban 890 507 fővel tetőzött. Ennek ellenére a fürdő 1914 és 1915 között veszteséggel működött, melynek oka a világháború gazdasági hatásai mellett a tervezett gyógyszálló hiánya is volt.
A fővárosi közgyűlés 1924-ben, lehetőségeihez mérten határozott a fürdő kibővítéséről. A strand építéséről a városgazdasági ügyosztály 1926. június 26-án írt ki tervpályázatot, melyre összesen 35 pályaterv érkezett. Ezek közül ifj. Francsek Imre (Budapest, 1891. március 27. - Szovjetunió, Gulág, 1952 k.) építész tervét ítélték a legjobbnak. A strandfürdőt 1927. augusztus 19-én nyitották meg, ez azonban a fürdő gazdasági egyensúlyát nem oldotta meg. A vízmelegítés költségei emelkedtek, ezért a vízhozam növelése érdekében szükségessé vált egy második artézi kút fúrása. A fúrási munkálatokat 1936. július 9-én kezdték meg és azok mintegy két évig tartottak. 1938. március 16-án 1256 méter mélyen 77 °C-os termálvizet találtak. A kútból 24 óránként 6000 m³ víz tört a felszínre, amely megoldotta a fürdő termálvízellátását és az épület fűtését is. 1939-re a fürdő fűtőberendezését átalakították a hévízzel való fűtésre, valamint a fürdő mellett ivócsarnok is épült.

It's Christmas Day!
We are so excited to share this beautiful day with you!
If you have been following us for a while you, you'll know that we don't have our own permanent home, therefore we never buy anything materialistic nor gift anything to each other. Instead, we chose to have an experience and spend a day together doing something special!
This Christmas was just exactly how we wanted it to be! We booked our tickets online in advance and spent a good few hours soaking up all the minerals in Széchenyi Thermal Baths.
We highly recommend this activity for everyone!

Budapest is the capital of thermal springs in Europe. We have over a hundred natural hot springs in our city. Our baths are a testimony to our history, tradition, culture and are a social gathering place for us. In this video, I show you three popular (the Széchenyi, the Gellért and the Rudas bath) and one much less-known (the Veli bej) bath. Also I give you some tips for visiting our baths.

Gellért Baths, Budapest, Hungary
A visit to Gellért Baths in Budapest, Hungary on May 20, 2017.
Built from 1912-1918, Gellért Baths features the world's first outdoor wave pool completed in 1927. Restoration work was made in 2008. We tried 8 different pools and thermal spas of different temperatures ranging from 15C to 40C (59F to 104F). It was a great way to spend the afternoon!
