Lumiere Hall Moscow
Lumiere Hall is a creative space with a new-format exhibition area that offers the opportunity to plunge into the world of art and creativity with the help of technology. The cozy atmosphere and original activity programme will appeal to all visitors.
The Lumiere Hall network of multimedia spaces began its existence with a platform in the centre of Moscow and rapidly gained the interest of citizens. Today, Lumiere Hall has branches in Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Yekatirinburg. This creative space opened up opportunities for original exhibitions and the unusual presentation of paintings of world famous artists.
In St. Petersburg, Lumiere Hall is located in the city centre, in the building of a former gas dispenser, which gives this place a defined historic atmosphere.
The creative space hosts multimedia exhibitions, original format film-nights, as well as fairs and festivals. Also, Lumier Hall is the perfect place for holding corporate events, lectures, seminars and conferences.
On complex territory, a second building was opened in a gallery format, where picture and painting exhibitions will be held on a continual basis. Apart from this, visitors have the opportunity to visit fascinating seminars, which will take place in several lecture halls, along with planned street lectures.
The Lumiere hall projection museum will become the new symbol of St. Petersburg, combining both unique spirituality and continuous development.
For guests of the Northern capital, this museum will be added to the must see list of places, while for locals it will be a place of exuberant meetings and pleasant time spent alone with art, where one can get away from life's hassles and get his head straight.

Swedish colonists built Nyenskans, a fortress at the mouth of the Neva River in 1611, in what was then called Ingermanland, which was inhabited by Finnic tribe of Ingrians. The small town of Nyen grew up around it.
At the end of the 17th century, Peter the Great, who was very interested in seafaring and maritime affairs, wanted Russia to gain a seaport in order to trade with the rest of Europe. He needed a better seaport than the country's main one at the time, Arkhangelsk, which was on the White Sea in the far north and closed to shipping during the winter.

Olga Preobrajenska Teaching in Paris (1959)
This is footage of famed Mariinsky ballerina and later dearly beloved teacher Olga Preobrajenska (1871-1962).
Tiny and not a great beauty in a traditional sense, Preobrajenska was extremely well-liked by her colleagues and beloved of the gallery members of the audience, being known as 'Queen of the Variations'.
The ballerina had joined the Imperial Ballet School in 1879, where her teachers were Ekaterina Vazem, Nicholas Legat, Enrico Cecchetti, and Christian Johansson. After graduating, she began taking lessons from the Italian teacher, Enrico Cecchetti. She danced Mariinsky Theatre for quarter a century, being given the title prima ballerina in 1900 at the age of twenty-nine.
Preobrajenska began teaching at the Imperial Ballet Theatrical School in 1914, with Agrippina Vaganova, Vera Volkova, Tatjana Gsovsky being among her pupils.
The ballerina left Russia in 1922, setting up a school Paris in 1923, with her students there including Irina Baronova, Tamara Toumanova, Igor Youskevitch, Margot Fonteyn, Alberto Alonso, Nadia Nerina, Maurice Béjart, Nicholas Orloff, Nina Vyroubova, Maina Gielgud, Vera Zorina, Alexandra Danilova, Serge Golovine, Milorad Miskovitch, Ludmila Tcherina, Igor Youskevitch, Nina Youskevitch, Yury Zoritch, Georges Skibine, André Eglevsky. Hélène Kirsova and Belinda Wright. Not a bad group I must say!
She retired in 1960, a year after this film was shot.
What I love about this footage is that we get to hear Olga Preobrajenska speaking -- greeting a ballerina arriving in class and then giving instructions to the students present.
She also demonstrates some steps and porte de bras -- who would ever imagine getting even a tiny sense of how this great Mariinsky ballerina moved!
The 'Notes' for this upload seem to have evaded the unflinchingly rigid cataloging usually imposed on all my materials (LOL). As a result, I have no access to my recording in the notes of some of the dancers in class that people were kind enough to identify when this video was first uploaded. I recall that the ballerina, who joins the class at the beginning of the footage and is greeted by and chats with Mme Preobrajenska, is Ludmilla Tcherina.
If anyone could help in with any of these identifications again, I'd be very grateful.
Jacqui B has just very kindly identified the very tall male dancer as Wladimir Skouratoff. - thanks for that!
Enjoy!
