Deleware - State #19
En route to completing 50 triathlons in 50 states by age 50, to raise $100,000 for ovarian cancer research, Deleware represents state #19. This race was on August 15, 2010 in Bear, Deleware at beautiful Lums Pond State Park.
Trap Pond State Park - Laurel, DE
Trap Pond State Park in Southern Delaware is a bucket list location featuring the northernmost natural stand of bald cypress trees in the United States. Trap Pond with 3,600 acres and 90 acre pond became Delaware's first state park in 1951. For great fun, borrow a bike (free) and ride the terrific 4.9 mile trail; excellent for boating, bird watching, camping, fishing, and hiking. This is a double thumbs up area!

Full Hike (WM/S): Swampy Forest and the Largest Pond in the First State (Delaware)
Murderkill River; Slaughter Beach; Whorekill. Those First State destinations often attract curious fans of morbid tales. Surely, gruesome events must have occurred to inspire such horrific designations. But true history denounces any mass killings. Better look elsewhere for a brush with the darker side of life. Lums Pond State Park is, perhaps, a better candidate.
At first glance, Delaware's largest pond is inviting. Boating and other aquatic activities come naturally. Perfect blue waters—calm and mirror-like at times—sustain a large natural/stocked fish population for eager anglers. Land facilities include a campground, pet area, nature center, and many more. Two main trails circumnavigate the entire pond.
It is on one of the two main trails that visitors should take notice. Rumors abound of unexpected cold spots and chilling screams coming through the woods. A young girl met misfortune long ago (before the grounds officially became a state park), and is believed to still be seeking a peaceful escape. Living or dead, everyone searches for moments of tranquility. Which, coincidentally, is exactly what the trails offer.

My Thoughts:
I should have started at Area 4 instead of the Nature Center (Area 5), because that would put me entirely on the Swamp Forest Trail. Otherwise, the trail was easily accessible. And enjoyable. Some parts allowed me to explore the water's edge. Piers, boardwalks, and bridges drew my interest for photography. Semi-swampy settings and a loopy route reminded me of Lake Chicot in Louisiana, albeit at 1/3 scale.
The hike could be done clockwise as well. Views from occasional benches were blocked by trees. A few times, I encountered bikers that were not supposed to be using the trail (off of the joint Swamp Forest/Little Jersey sections). Other hikers sporadically crossed my path (on weekdays). Supposedly, the location is haunted. It could be that an unseen lost soul was my hiking companion.
Note: I never heard any screams in the woods or felt particularly chilly, and only found out about the haunted tales afterward.
